God and the Funeral of the church To begin with the obvious The church has gone through and is going through questions of how shall we live our faith? At its best the church is in continuous experimentation. So we have both lament and hope about being the church. A typical comment of lament is this “Maybe church, as we know it, is a thing of the past and 100 years from now on a 'then and now" thread someone will post ' Do you remember Churches? Do you remember God? I am going to offer some fragments to connect... Continue reading

Navigating without a plan. One of the issues for theology is what do we mean with the term, God’s plan or being lead by the Spirit? We ask because all Churches are in a process of imagining what it means to be a national church. We are in a time of asking hard questions of what it means to be a congregation. It does not stop there, for individual christians are asking what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? We are trying to navigate these questions in a time unrest. As a society we are faced with... As we know the United Church is in a process of imagining what it means to be a national church. Inner Reality Trinity Sunday, May 22 Kitchissippi United Church Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31 PSALM 8 GOSPEL John16: 12 -15 The Rev. Dr. George Hermanson We are faced with many crucial issues that undermine our wellbeing. Our society is polarized. There seems to be a lack of desire to engage others in fellowship. This has created difficult issues for the church in how to speak to our society. We have a history of calling upon individuals and society to do justice and compassion. The problem is, it is often phrased “do the will of God.” Or some have said, “What would Jesus... Continue reading

Issues of Providence in Light of Good and Evil Life Giving Spirituality: a state filled with wonder. It is a place in the mind and heart where we are open to receiving other people, the natural world, and new ideas. When we are at home with radical uncertainty, these new ideas come to us as gifts. Madawaska Institute is bringing Thomas Oord to Ottawa area. March 31 to April 3,2016 Thomas Jay Oord is a theologian, philosopher, and scholar of multi-disciplinary studies. Transformation: Abundance of Love Kitchissippi United Church March 23,2016 The Rev Dr. George Hermanson It is always good to be here. In checking my past sermons I discovered that I had preached here on the texts for this Sunday. In case you remember that sermon I had to write a new one. Jenni told me that your theme for Lent has been transformation, where you have been invited to figure out what you use your hearts for, how you love, and that gave me the hook for this morning..As well, she said you were using a friend’s Fat Soul manifesto.... What we need is here Dominion Chalmers United Church The Rev Dr. George Hermanson Nov 15, 2015 Mark 13:1-8 1st Samuel 1:4-20 Mark’s passage this week is a difficult one. When we understand that he is building a narrative that will sustain the early community, we get insight on the passage. He uses the oral traditions that the early community shared. Then he tries to address particular issues of that early community. Mark is not a history book but a work of art and imagination, built on experience. Having experienced God Mark has Jesus imagine what would happen if we... Continue reading

Pentecost 13 – August 23, 2015 Living Well South Gloucester United Church Ephesians 6:10-20 Rev Dr. George Hermanson As you begin a new adventure i leave a few words to build on. The church faces a new age where it is now marginalized. At one point we were the center of society and that all changed from the seventies on. Church became an optional activity. This is called the collapse of Christendom. We now fully live in a secular age. There is some good news here, Whitehead has suggested, in Adventure of Ideas, that secularism is a process of the... Aug 16 South Gloucester Being Wise Rev Dr George Hermanson Ephesians 5: 15 -20 Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, Being wise is a demanding activity. It is needed today as we seek ways to discern how to live and have a passion for the activities that are needed for a world of the common good. At the conference on the environment I was at in Claremont (seizing the alternative, creating an ecological civilization) an economist from Edmonton gave a paper on the economics of happiness. In it he challenged the transactional approach,... Continue reading

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost August 2 2015 John 6: 24-35 South Gloucester Rev. Dr. George Hermanson Being Church As you know we live on the Madawaska River, near Burnstown. As many of you know living in the country, out of the city brings both threats and beauty. In our time there we have had many unsettling experiences caused by nature. When we first moved in, there was the ice storm. Power was out for a week and we could not get up our driveway because of the ice. Two summers ago we had a great adventure on the Madawaska River... Ninth Sunday After Pentecost July 26, 2015 John 6: 1-21 Rev Dr George Hermanson South Gloucester Abundance We have two narratives that run through life. Both are present as options in this morning’s gospel. The first, and I would say this is the more common one, is to approach the world with prudence verging on suspicion. The world is not a safe place. It is not to be trusted. We see this attitude celebrated and espoused every day in insurance ads and ads for home alarm systems on TV. Governments appeal to this fear. There are tv shows that ramp... Continue reading

Eighth Sunday After Pentecost July 19, 2015 2 Samuel 7: 1-14a Rev Dr George Hermanson Ephesians 2: 11-22 Building Up Less than a month from now the 42nd General Council of the United Church of Canada will meet in Corner Brook Newfoundland. Chief among their work at this meeting is changing the structure of the church. As congregations have been aging and closing our church is shrinking and the organization has to respond to this new reality. Implicit in their deliberations is the question of who will we be? Who are we, the united church becoming? What will the church,... Continue reading

South Gloucester United Church Rev Dr. George Hermanson There is a puzzle in why Mark places this story in the travels of Jesus. A hint is in the fact at the beginning of Jesus ministry John was arrested. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. We hear no more of John until this story, which Mark places after the story of the sending out of the 12 disciples and before telling of their return to Jesus. We learn that even the King is hearing about Jesus. Word of this would, in turn,... Continue reading
