I thought the last Finnish separatist was captured near Iron Mountain in the early 90's
Yoopers forming a 51st state? Why not?
The U.P. apparently is getting P.O.ed. Because of rising frustrating over state revenue sharing cuts and proposed tax changes that drain local government coffers, there is now talk of reviving a decades-old proposal for the Upper Peninsula to secede from Michigan and become the 51st state. It’s ...

Draft review: Kirk Cousins
Where to begin ... Let's go with Jason Reid of The Washington Post, who calls the Cousins selection risky but necessary. "Mike Shanahan reportedly had Cousins as the third-best quarterback in the draft, behind Griffin and top overall pick Andrew Luck," Reid writes. Still, this pick may ...

MSU winning it all? Why not?
Spring football left us with some questions answered and some unanswered, as usual. It also left me with a bit of a revelation -- based more on how people reacted to Denicos Allen than on what he said. A lot of players on a lot of teams talk about winning national titles, and most of them fall s...
Was able to access articles and the blog w/o a subscription. Subscribed anyway figuring it was only a matter of time. IT does mess up sometimes. My son's free college dial up access still works 5 years after graduation even though they supposedly pulled the Merit system plug years ago.
Agree with you entirely Joe. 7-5 or 12-0 depending on luck and the breaks. Not unlike last year and we saw how that worked out. The big difference is the lack of sure losses. TV exposure has brought a great deal of parity to college football. Recruits have many more choices and opportunities than years ago when only a few big name programs made the few national and regional broadcasts. VA Tech and Boise St are good examples. Both solid programs for years with TV exposure vaulting them to national standing. I think people don't realize how difficult it is these days to achieve the results MSU has the last few years. It takes a lot of hard work and luck. I am afraid our friends (?) to the southeast are going to find that out this year. There are no entitlements in college football with the parity existing today.

Joe, do you know how to get one? I haven't found how on LSJ.com.
Monday morning tweets: Gholston, Cousins
Lingering concerns about Will Gholston's knee? He tweeted this today: "The knee is great love this spartan care." Feel better? Thank Twitter. Also, Kirk Cousins tweeted that he'll be on the Dan Patrick show at 10:45 this morning. A "Mr. Patrick" or two are in order, I would think. Also, a...
Anyone had success yet in getting a digital subscription? If so how did you do it?

Farting in the wind again I see. Fortunately that blows the stench away.
Let me know when something shocking happens
Todd McShay is surprised, other analysts are surprised, Kirk Cousins and his agent are no doubt surprised. Everyone expected him to go in the second or third round. He's still on the board after three rounds and 95 picks, with seven quarterbacks gone -- including Russell Wilson and Nick Foles, t...
One of you songsmiths finish this one for John Hannah, Biggie Munn, and Duffy Daugherty
Anybody here seen my old friend John?
He's built huge school here. .......
Burbridge update, Duffy recap
Top MSU 2012 recruit Aaron Burbridge continues to work toward qualifying academically -- and no matter what rumor you hear between now and then, that won't be determined until he's done with summer school. Burbridge is doing very well so far this semester, Farmington Hills Harrison coach John He...
Any news of Nix's penance? Any sightings of him running the Breslin steps day and night since April Fools Dat to the theme of Rockie?

Big night
The NFL can't mess with Jerel Worthy on his birthday weekend, right? If a Spartan's name is called tonight, Worthy's is the best bet. And before the draft gets cooking, it's Duffy Daugherty Memorial Award night at Eagle Eye -- where Francie Daugherty will be remembered and Vince Dooley will be h...
Not a very big turnout here tonight. Everyone watching the draft I suppose. Love veal parmigiana. 3 quarterbacks in the top 8. Not sure what that means for Kirk. So far teams addressing needs for the most part.

Also agree with you on football recruits. Just look at the physical changes that take place after they reach campus. Some become bigger, faster, more agile and stronger. Some just bigger. Others no change. Some don't need to develop like one bearded 12 year old 7th grader I coached in basketball long ago.
Big chat
It was good, though strangely focused on cuisine.
Even though I brought it up I kind of agree with you. However, I believe some day people will look back and remember the Cousins era like they do the Smith, Webster, Washington days. I have been fortunate to have gone through both. My 27 year old son only knows the Cousins era. Perhaps he will some day share stories of Cousins like I do of Bubba.

Not so strange when you consider who the participants were. Think I'll go pan fry a few crab cakes.
Also beware the evil Blue empire. They're everywhere.

John L will do OK as long as he and the AD don't ride a motorcycle together.
Memories...
John L. Smith's return to Arkansas and this piece for USA Today has them flooding back. And yes, just to be clear, the "beat writer" mentioned is ME. I wasn't sure exactly how to handle that because this wasn't exactly a column. I was asked to write an analysis of what fans and media can exp...
They don't have Labor Day in the South no matter how many people are working. They don't believe in celebrating unions.
MSU-ND under the lights
Along with MSU's Aug. 31 season opener against Boise State (8 p.m., ESPN), the Spartans will play at night when Notre Dame visits on Sept. 15 (8 p.m., ABC). And that's it for the Spartans in 2012 -- the rest of their games will be noon or 3:30 kicks. On the Big Ten schedule, I'm kind of surp...

Coming up
The MSU spring game on Saturday at Spartan Stadium (1:06 p.m., Big Ten Network, WJIM 1240-AM, free admission), with the gates opening at 11:30 a.m. Prior to the game, MSU coaches will put on a free youth clinic for ages 8-12 on the practice field across Shaw Lane -- though no autograph session t...
The receiving corps right now may not be the corps this fall. Lip petit is hurt and some studs arrive in August.
Maxwell out with sprained knee

Sorry to hear but Maxwell has been through this for 3 years already. There is probably more value in Cook's reps. As the injury shows, you are always one play away from needing a replacement. We were extremely fortunate during KC's tenure. And BH for that matter.

Another Moeller score for MSU football (and then a QB)
Cincinnati Moeller gave MSU's defense Greg Jones, then Marcus Rush and now Shane Jones -- a coveted linebacker who gave a verbal commitment today for the class of 2013, per the Cincinnati Enquirer. His offer list included Oklahoma, Michigan and Nebraska. Moeller receiver Monty Madaris is part of...
Concur with your opinion and though that kind of character is welcome in AA I'm glad he wasn't there. He was a good player and would have made our path more difficult. Wish for him to go somewhere else. U-Miami?
