Re Yahoo! it's not just a misstated question. My understanding is that the error appeared on his resume. Pretty sure you'd be fired if you misrepresented your education on your resume. ;-)
Pretty sure the board isn't doing this to ferret out the truth - fairly certain they're fielding the investigation because they think it will show responsiveness to the public/investor outcry. Take control of the situation in an attempt to nip it in the bud, rather than let public opinion spin out of control (more than it is now).
I can't remember the name of the company, but there is a pharma company (not one of the biggies - a mid-sized maker of generics) who hired a CEO who, it turned out, misrepresented her education on her resume. A reporter discovered this during a routine fact check for a simple "Company A hires new CEO" article and for month the vigilante watch dogs beat the crap out of the company. I'm guessing they think they're bringing some closure to the matter by "getting to the bottom of it".
What Are We REALLY Looking For In A CEO?
Is the purpose of a CEO to lead a company or to lead investors? Is the purpose of a CEO to manage public perception or lead internal direction? Must a high level position like CEO demand a deep technical knowledge of the details of the worker-bee side of the business? Must the CEO of K...
The hoodie thing is pretty ridiculous - and is actually obscuring Pachter's second comment (that really nobody is focusing on) about whether Zuck's mission for connecting the world is compatible with his "new" mission as CEO of a publicly traded company: to create shareholder value through revenue growth. I don't necessarily believe the two are incompatible but that - not his choice of attire - is at least world discussion.
The Yahoo! thing is a different matter though. I don't believe this has much - if anything - to do with whether or not he's qualified to run a tech company if he doesn't have formal training in tech. Of course he is - and, really, how much worse could Yahoo! get anyway? the issue is actually more substantial than that - is this a CEO who is prone to overlooking important details? Or is this a CEO who doesn't actually have a grasp on what matters for his business - e.g, he was willing to fudge a bit to pump up his technical cred because he actually believes it matters, even though it clearly doesn't? Or at worst, is this a CEO who may be inclined to unethical behavior. Misrepresenting your credentials is certainly unethical if you've done it intentionally (or condoned it in some way). \

A Toast: To Going Heads Down
There is a lot to be said for going heads down. This post goes out to all the people too busy doing to pontificate. If you have someone you know who fits this bill, please feel free to pass along this post to them. It's a great way of saying thanks. - - - - - - - - - - - While there is a...
Well ladies, I guess it's true what they say: you can put the publisher on the web but you can't put the web in the publisher. OK - nobody really says that... but I'll point this out to them.
In the meantime, in case you didn't catch the link to the no-registration-required link in the first paragraph, try this: http://ow.ly/3qdZI
Get (and give) the gift of good ideas courtesy of McGraw-Hill
My friends at McGraw-Hill are giving the gift of good ideas this holiday season -- in the form of a free e-book highlighting smart thinking for 2011. They've tapped their stable of business authors (including me) to deliver a hearty batch of practical, thought-provoking, useful and insightful ...
Micronetworks - imagine that. ;-)
Hello, friend. Do I know you?
Today is National UnFriend Day. That's not what this post is really about, but hearing my local morning show radio jocks chit chat with listeners about who they would unfriend on Facebook today got me thinking. In the past, I've pondered how social computing is changing the way we think about...
Hey John - Thanks so much for taking part in the microREVIEW process. And thanks for buying your copy. But most of all thanks for your kind words. I think you nailed the key points in the chapter and your perspectives on the ideas are spot-on. Love it!
Lots and lots of small reviews
NOTE: For repeat visitors, I am updating the links in the review schedule below to point directly to each blogger's post about the book. Today, my friend and colleague Aaron Strout kicked off what I hope proves to be an interesting two-week experiment in influencer outreach, crowdsourcing, soc...
Thanks for all the kind words and really glad you enjoyed the book. After all, you taught me everything I know. ;-) See you at the launch party I hope.
book review: microMARKETING
Summary: Remarkably refreshing content. Size matters, but meaning matters more. Ignite a passion and the few will engage the many. Real Review Every business book feels the same. Take one fairly rational point and blow the hell out of it. The first chapter sets the stage, the second intro...
I fixed the year. Thanks babez. :-)
Your green can pump some life into 'Killer Green'
With social media usage approaching something like ubiquity, it's not surprising to see creative endeavors that are are hatched and nurtured in social find their way into the more traditional mainstream media. To name just a few: Twitter's @shitmydadsays has been optioned for television, coun...
D-man - somewhere around the middle I acknowledged that he was doing his job. It's really more about the how than the what.
What's the opposite of grand, Hyatt?
This past Friday, I met a conference organizer at the Grand Hyatt in New York City to shoot a quick, two-minute promo video for his upcoming event. (I'll hold off on saying which organizer and which conference at this point -- not really relevant to the post and he hasn't announced the line...

.tv has been around for a couple of years but - you're right - they're not all that common yet. Good way to stand out if you're a video producer, which is exactly what we're hoping to communicate in our work with this client.
See and be seen on the SXSW scene... on southby.tv
I'm posting this from Austin where I'll spend the next few days working out of the Powered home office and catching as much of the SXSWi experience as I can swing. I haven't planned out a schedule of sessions and have only rsvp'd to a handful of parties. So I'll basically go wherever the wind ...

Will we finally stop screwing around with social in 2010?
It has been at least a couple of years since I've done a proper "predictions" post, although last year I contributed to a fantastic 2009 predictions ebook that Peter Kim pulled together. This year I contributed to a similar ebook, but this time with my new best buds at Powered, Drillteam and...
Thanks everyone. We're all pretty excited over here - erm, I guess I mean down here in Austin. We're kicking this thing off right with some business planning (a some partying too.) G
crayon to the power of Powered
As y'all know, I've been holding down the virtual fort at crayon for the past two-and-a-half years. We've had our ups -- I've had the opportunity to work with some great people and some great clients. But believe me we've had our downs -- I've toughed it out at a couple of points during our hi...
Good to hear Tanner - I did hope veterans would also find some interesting or useful tidbits in it. And tried hard not to make it the same old boring stuff. G
So ya wanna start a blog...
Just a friendly reminder that I'll be co-presenting a free blogging basics webinar tomorrow afternoon (11/19/09). The event is hosted by Target Marketing magazine and sponsored by Compendium Blogware, and takes place online at 2pm ET. There's still time to register (or refer your clients and fri...
Hey Rohit - You've nailed one of my pet peeves perfectly. I wrote a similar post a while back. Being an expert in a tool is tantamount to being, well, a tool. ;-)
Here's a link to the post - just cuz your readers might find it relevant: http://bit.ly/2IQ1qw

Don't Call Me A Social Media Guy
Yesterday I hosted a conversation on Twitter all about authenticity and what that truly means. It's a buzzword, to be sure, but it was interesting that the 140 character based conversation yielded many different perceptions of what authenticity means. For most honesty was a big part of it, as wa...

Great seeing you too. I feel like we didn't even get to say a proper goodbye as we were swept away amidst the throng of raving Armano fan boys.
Sadly, my Fashion 2.0 get-up is likely to feature a Three Wolf Moon t-shirt.
Miscellaneous Monday
This is just a quick jumble of recent and new items that may be of interest (to me, if not to you.) Blog World & New Media Expo: I'm fresh back from Las Vegas where, as I noted last week, I presented at Blog World. Home improvement blogger Tony Saucier attended my session and wrote a nice...
Hmmmm... what rhymes with Nissan? ;-)
What's the price of five dollars?
That wasn't meant to be a trick question, but rest assured the answer isn't five dollars. Here's the scoop. I drive a Nissan Altima and I've been reasonably happy with it. It's neither the best car I've ever owned nor the worst, but I'm not a car guy so if it gets me from point A to point B...
Hey Matt - Yup, what you said. BTW, I was at Blog World too (albeit for just a couple of hours surrounding my session) - wish we could have met in person. G
What if the future of technology is more sand than silicon?
This is just flat-out smart and cool. The Institute for the Future teamed up with Sun Microsytems and Boing Boing to host The Digital Open, a tech expo for teens under the age of 17. Last week they announced a series of winning projects, one of which caught my eye -- not because it made use...
LOL. You break my heart, Dave - but I can't argue with you.

Where does the time go? I'll be damned if I know... Today is October 1st and, as I write this, it isn't even the morning of the 1st. It's already prime time (heh, remember prime time? It's when people used to tune into whatever programming the networks were showing, before the days of what-you...
Hi Heather - Apologies for the delay in responding. Given that you're adding social media as part of your integrated marketing mix (as it should be vs a stand-alone silo) it's not necessarily a mistake to issue a release about your new initiatives.
However, I'd be sure to make it a social media press release (the major wire services offer these as do services like PitchEngine) and be sure to include some bloggers in your media database if you do any outreach.
Hope this helps.

Discuss social with me: 2009 Mprofs B2B Forum
The MarketingProfs Business-to-Business Forum was one of my favorite conferences of 2008. I debuted my r u ready presentation to a roomful of marketers, met lots of great people and had tons of fantastic hallway conversations. So this year, I'm going back for more -- but with a twist. Rathe...
Thanks Gagan - fixed the error and found another typo that needed fixing too. :-)
Work in progress: on Netflix's corporate culture
A few days ago, NetFlix posted their internal corporate culture and policies document to Slideshare and it has begun to make the rounds. With the spectre of Twitter's stolen internal documents still lurking in the backs of our minds I should point out that yes, the corporation actually posted it...
Hey Lew - That's not the complete manuscript, just the *first* 5,000 words. 50,000 more to go. :-)
5,000 words and 6 random thoughts about writing them
When I announced my book deal, I promised occasional updates on my progress. I figure now is as good a time as any to let you know where things stand. As I write this post, I'm sitting on roughly 5,000 words of my manuscript. I've written more than that and have plenty of jotted notes and typed-...
I have nothing against "wrong" - I'm all for it, and I'll often blog from a deliberately one-sided POV (and have sometimes been wrong) with the intention of sparking up conversation. But where is the line between wrong and being ignorant? And does it matter?
Writing what you know and knowing what you write
Earlier this morning, I posed a question to my Twitter community: Here's what some of my followers had to say: Mostly what you'd expect, but with a few (reasonable) dissenting opinions thrown in for good measure. I'd love my blog readers to chime in as well, but let me add some additional c...
For clarity, CON nailed a point that maybe didn't come across as clearly as it might have - I'm not talking about fudging some crazy/pointless viral video for the purpose of a shallow quick hit. In fact, none of my five points suggest that marketers "create" a dancing man, while the first suggests that marketers "be" a dancing man. Which leads me to my next point...
The dancing man is a *symbol*, a spark - of course, marketers probably shouldn't care about the actual man dancing. But his fearless nature, the network effect that began with a single, decisive action, etc are things that every marketer needs to consider.
5 ways every marketer can have a "dancing man moment"
Last night, social media serendipity led me to a video of a man dancing at an outdoor music festival. The dancing man himself isn't anything special -- a clumsy show of flailing arms and legs that wouldn't get him through the first round of auditions on So You Think You Can Dance. What happe...
