Fantastic article. Case and point: French Connection. It's a disbanded, early-aughts hip-hop group that's developed a cult following after having their 2001 demo posted on a private filesharing website by an ex-music executive. Here's his introduction indicating a little bit of the proto-digital distribution record label mentality: "I've uploaded a demo that I loved here but couldn't get my label boss at the time to bite so it remained unsigned. This was one I felt so strongly about my department head -who also loved it- asked me if I'd be willing to tell the boss I'd quit to try and force his hand. As it turned out, it never came to that because of problems finding the project's manager (turns out he was under investigation by the Feds) and the impending demise of the label but I did feel strongly enough to quit over it. Mind you, especially with a small indie label, it's kinda pointless signing something if you can't get the boss excited over it as he holds the purse strings and the power to make or break (via neglect) a record. Even if the radio promo guys hate it, if the big boss says it's a priority, they'll work their butts off to make things happen."
