Great tag line, Charlotte, and spot on. Happy? Well, you might catch me that way at a moment when I'm not looking.
The Delicate Tension of Being a Writer
When you're a writer, you are always pulled to write. If you're like me, and I fancy that you are, because we writers share odd (yet wonderful) traits, you're constantly thinking, I should be writing. Or, I wish I was writing. Or, why aren't I writing? The pull of the story is always with ...
Yes, I am with you. I'll go to the page and do what I can.
Stop SOPA
I have a kick-ass post on letting go and how difficult and necessary it is. But you'll note I'm not posted it today. That's because I'm participating in the Stop SOPA strike. I'm not technically advanced enough to figure out how to black out my site, but this way you get the benefit of learning...

Novel Writing: The Remake Your Life Plot
I'm about three chapters into a new novel and the other day when I was making some notes on themes and events to come, the thought occurred to me that I'm writing a Remake Your Life plot. I made that name up, but these kinds of plots are staples of women's fiction. For various reasons, the p...
Congratulation to the Ducks, Charlotte. Sorry this thing zapped you but glad you're better. Thanks for the heads up on the books. I wish you the very best 2012!
A Writer Gets Sick
January is slow to get going. You've got the hoopla surrounding New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day, and then a bunch of football games, and then things kinda slow down and level off. People trudge back to work and their normal, non-holiday lives, and finally the month gets itself in gear. And ...
Strippers and Magicians
I should've made a resolution about writing. You know: do it every day or take a class or find an agent. I wasn't thinking about any of that. No, I was wondering if I wanted to continue dating this bitch, writing. Someone has flipped my hour glass. There is some sand left but what do I want to be doing while those grains slip through that waist? Then something came to me; out of the blue, I learned something about writing. The mantra I repeatedly hear is get to the meat of it right away. Really? When Gypsy Rose Lee... Continue reading

Happy New Year!
For a year we have trended downward. I think it is our turn to rebound. The stock market has, if not risen from the dead, stirred; the fright of the debt crisis fades; there is a glimmer of economic hope. We are entering a peace that leaves us wondering if we are doing the right thing as much as fighting two wars did. We are—it is peace. Our planet is wiser, as is our nation, as we are, you and I. I like the words of my favorite poet, Rachel Wetzsteon: Some radiance had found the little room. I scrutinized,... Continue reading

Hey! What a great way to start the new year! I love your blog, Charlotte. You do a great job keeping us going. Happy New Year.
Writing Contest Week Four Winner Announced
I know the only reason you're visiting today is to find out who won the final December writing contest, as I like to so grandiosely refer to my four little giveaways. But while I have you here, and before I reveal the name of the winner, let's chat for a minute. About 2012. Do you know where yo...
You look like a number 2.
Christopher Booker said there are seven basic plots in literature, that even the most intricate story can be boiled down to these. When I took freshman English--we had class in caves then--the number was twelve, cited by a German whose name escapes me. The reason I believe twelve is indeed the correct number is that there are also twelve characters or twelve types people. The universe has symmetry. Haven't you ever met a couple and you think: My god, how did an asshole like that find such a snippy woman to marry? Out of all the people in the world,... Continue reading

No, I have not seen that movie. In some ways sprawling Paris is ordinary, but there is an electricity in the heart of the city where those guys hung out. If you want an education, go to London; if you want to contemplate man's existence, go to Rome; but if you want to fall in love, go to Paris.
Tips on Writing: Quick Fixes for Passive Voice
In order to be a good writer, you must avoid passive voice whenever possible. Yawn. This topic has all the excitement of a rainy day in January. But, the thing is, it's true. Passive voice can sink a sentence faster than the Titanic. Okay, okay, I'll quit with the metaphors that are as dum...
I don't disagree with any of this. What I find interesting is that when I am enjoying a book, I never consider the voice of the verbs or whether the Hemingway-hated adverbs are present or not. I don't look at sentence structure or the quality of the adjectives that are used. When I read the best books, I'm looking at the page but the author is telling the story in my ear. It's very difficult--at least it has been so far--to put all of this together and produce a result that sounds natural. I think the answer to that may be practice. But like in any thriller, the damn clock is ticking.

No doubling up, Zan Marie! It's like Bob Barker winning The Price is Right. Charlotte, I was a good boy during Christmas week--some will say it was not by choice. Doesn't good behavior, even if it is unintentional, deserve a reward? Sign me up.
Writing Contest Week Four
Calling this series of contests I'm running in December a writing contest is a bit like calling an ant a giant. Or a common housecat a tiger. Because, all you have to to win is write a comment. One tiny little comment. You don't have to write a story, or an essay, or an article, or a novel. ...
Thanks for the comment, Charlotte. You know, until you pointed it out I didn't see that to all the world that looks like a saxophone. If I turn him a little to the side you will see that is a trumpet with the bell resting on his leg. That gentleman is Chet Baker. If you like momma's boy-tortured soul types, Chet is your guy. I am told he was very good looking in his youth, but the smoking and the heroin took a toll. He left behind a lot of music but is best known for his rendition of "My Funny Valentine." If you listen to it on youtube, don't mess with the vocal version. Bless his heart, Chet couldn't sing worth a damn. Listen to the trumpet only version. The photo shows him hunched over in a folding chair.
Two and a Wakeup
I don't known if the fat lady will sing but the little porky guy in the red suit is about to fly. This year, unlike every year I can remember, I won't have to scramble around on the Christmas Eve. I even have a five gallon water jug I "borrowed" from the dentist. I'll fill it with all the afte...
Heaven
Two days before Christmas I met a woman from Viet Nam. We talked about her and her country, not about me and her country. Her American husband had done five tours or five years in Viet Nam before he married her and brought her to the southern United States. She said, "I couldn't believe what we had, the food and clothing. And my own car! In Viet Nam if we wanted to go somewhere we had to ride the back of a scooter or a jitney. I have been back to my country four times. I never ride the scooter.... Continue reading

Great post, Charlotte. You have the good things on your list. Enjoy them all.
Christmas and Holiday Greetings
Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays, whichever you prefer. I have to admit I'm stumped. I want to write a heartfelt, heartwarming, heart full Christmas message to you, one that's not corny and cliched. And I'm not sure I can. Because Christmas is all about corny (like the wonderfully tacky Nigh...
Merry Christmas, Charlotte.
Writing Contest Week Three Winner Announced
It is Friday, and time to announce the winner of the week three contest, which just so happens to be a spot in my Make Money Writing class which begins in January. I've been trying to think of some brilliant ideas on winning to include in this post, but I fear that that word is now permanently ...

I'd write what I write now: mysteries set in the present with things like cell phones and dialogue that sounds like it came from the forties. I'd love to win the class, Charlotte, but don't be offended if I sit in the back.
December Writing Contest Week Three
I like to call my little December promotion a writing contest, because, after all, you do have to write a comment to win. But even if you wrote the crappiest comment in the world and the random selector chose you, I would give you the present. So don't worry about composing the Great American...
Endless Search
Particle physics has chased down electrons, protons, neutrinos, and may now be on the verge of nailing down the smallest of all, the Higgs boson, the god particle. It is thought of as an endpoint. Is there such a point for us? Apart from death, do we reach a stage where we are what we are? Are we like Hal, the infamous computer in Arthur Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Does our DNA evolve, so that we become something we never suspected we'd be? And how do you turn it? How do you become a vibrant, sparkling being instead of... Continue reading

Charlotte, I'm not sure I want to choose three words; yours seem to serve the purpose so well. This is a great post. Looks to me like a great springboard for going into 2012.
Three Powerful Words for an Amazing New Year
It's a little bit of a thing to come up with words for the year. Christine Kane chooses one word to live by. Chris Brogan chooses three. And since I'm a bit of a lush, and always seem to want more, I go along with Chris and opt to choose three. Last year I chose the words radical, fierce, and...
Hey! I see an ad for "Christmas is a Season! 2008" on the right column of your blog. I am proud to say I am in the 2009 edition.
Writerly Gifts, Week Two
Last week, I gave away a journal in which to write your brilliant ideas, plots, character arcs and stories. Now you need something with which to write those wonderful bits. And so, behold: a set of disposable fountain pens. I love these pens. They have the feel of a fine fountain pen, yet yo...
Nicole's address is c/o J.D., Gates to Hell Boulevard, Lost Beach, 34567. Oh, I'll be needing some pens for the journal.

Writing two books at one time doesn't work for me; the characters seem to meld together. I've had what seem to be great ideas come to me while I'm in the middle of writing something. I always write them down, but sometimes when I look back at my notes, I don't have the same enthusiasm or my summary doesn't make sense. I've decided I should devote more time to the notes I make. I should take a break and write a synopsis, at least of as much of the story as I know. If I can't find interest in the project when I read my notes (i.e. synopsis) sometime later, what impression will it make on an agent?
How Many Projects Should Writers Focus on at a Time?
Lately I've been cursed blessed with an abundance of ideas. I've got viable ideas for three mainstream novels and at least six ideas for novels to write in a new genre I'd like to experiment with a bit. As a professional writer, I'm accustomed to juggling projects. I'll often have an ongoing ...
Well, I'm a little late with Thgving wishes. Have a SAFE Black Friday! You're tempting me with these deals, Charlotte.

NOTE: The sale is over, but you can still access all these classes and services on their individual pages. Give the gift of creativity this Christmas, either to yourself or someone else. In the United States, Thursday is Thanksgiving, when we eat turkey and count our blessings. I'm grateful ...
