Her response is what surprised me, not your son's curiosity. I love some of the suggestions above. With my girls, I lean more towards the 'people come in different sizes' than preaching fat-phobia. I control their food choices and activity opportunities and for now that is enough. What a sticky situation for you though!
We Need More Straight Talk
When I was in college, political correctness was a new phenomenon. I spent many nights debating whether I should use the generic he or change to the less controversial s/he when writing papers. Now, fifteen years later, the PC movement is deeply ingrained in all aspects of everyday life. My...
Well I guess that tops the mom who brought pull-ups in the 'diaper' bag and then had her daughter change from undies to pull-up to pee and then back to undies. Ewww in either case!
A Ziploc? For THAT?
At a recent visit to Washington Market Park, I was witness to a most shocking event. A little boy (“The Pee-er”; names have been left out because I can't remember them) of about 4 years of age, was aided by his caregiver (“The Holder”) in the process of peeing into a Ziploc bag (and I checked,...
It still sounds a bit off to me. Either address it parent to parent or kid to kid, but her speaking for her daughter and then expecting your son to speak for himself is kind of a power trip, no? I guess I'm more for addressing the issue in the moment or letting it go.
Corrections, Compliments, Comments, and Controversy
“Ma’am, I admire you. Most parents don’t give a darn.” The bagging boy left the rest of the sentence unsaid, “… when their kids are misbehaving.” Both boys were unruly at the checkout counter, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as it has been n the past. But clearly, my repeated corrections of the bo...
We just got back from Maine and I thought of you all when we were wandering around Portland and passing by Treehouse/edith&edna...love a beach evening!
cue: "It's-a-small-world-afterall...."
Our beach day turned into a beach night. Once I was packed and ready for the beach, I turned around behind me to see that my little ones were deeply engrossed in play. Together. When all three babes are engrossed in play together, well, you just don't mess with that. So the beach plan was quic...
But the trains still run whether you are on them or not, no? Don't see how your avoidance lessens the impact.
Why we avoid the subway
Today I'll answer one of the many questions that are still coming in. I'll respond to them over time, okay? The one that I'll answer today: why don't we take public transportation? Aren't buses and subways a good thing? Yes, public transportation is wonderful and once the No Impact experiment is...
Happy day!! What a sweet video! My 1 year old is napping, the 2.75 yr old is building some sort of block castle thingamajig and I'm about to go do that. My new snap press just came in the mail and I'm about to start snapping anything and everything. ;-)
This blog is two!
(video link if the stream above isn't working for you.) Yup, she's got it. It's two! (She'd also say "two" if I asked what shirt she wanted to wear today. "Two", is the answer du jour, you see.) Two years ago this week, I moved this little blog over from Blogger. I've gone on (and on) many t...
Thanks so much for the link. That last pic is adorable and so familiar. My 11 month old stands on the stove door of our Nova kitchen all the time!
Meet Margaret
I've received several emails asking about the doll in this post's photo, which has reminded me that I have yet to introduce you to Margaret, Adelaide's doll, and to tell you about the fabulous place she came from. Margaret came from Peru, via The Qewar Project, a 'social work initiative' in th...
