Time to get this wagon train a-movin'! Another poignant post from Small Notebook caught my eye: this time, it was about moving on from hobbies one has outgrown. In many ways, I feel that post described what blogging has been for me. It was a powerful outlet, a fantastic venue... Continue reading

A knitting project is off the needles and in the mail, as of this morning! A girlfriend in the States was due with her first baby this week. Keeping the surprise, she opted to dub her baby "JellyBean" while in the belly. It seemed appropriate to knit baby a sweater... Continue reading

My wee girl started school last week. It was a long, tough week for all of us. The girls were thrown for a loop when Papa atypically had to travel for work at the start of the week, and then with little one starting school too...yow. Still, it went relatively... Continue reading

As a mom living abroad, half a planet away from closest friends and family, I find I often troll the internet looking for support and understanding, a sense of community that I can lack in my immediate surrounds, little tips and tricks that make life easier and more balanced, or... Continue reading

I've been away for a while. Away from my home for a week. Away from the computer for even longer. Away. Hooray! Now that the computer is in the central part of the house, I find I just don't get the time and mental space for blogging. I think of... Continue reading

Two days ago, I discovered a suspicious little spot that looked like nibbles at the bottom of a door. I texted Hubby that I suspected we had a rodent. A mouse I could accept. A rat not so much. I've just come home from an evening out, and Hubby has... Continue reading

What a beautiful post! Thank you for taking the time to slow down yourself and notice the splendor around you...and gently encourage us to do the same. We are in the opposite problem here in that summer has taken a nasty turn towards relentless HEAT for weeks with no relief, and just about everyone we encounter has had well enough of it. But change is coming. The trees are slowly starting to tell us so. There will be a shift, and there is so much to be enjoyed in the now. The beach, the river, the breakfasts outside, the naked little girl who runs free at home all day long... Thank you for the gentle reminder. And thank you for the bump picture. You look gorgeous!

Hubby and I were looking over finances lately, and he wondered aloud why we weren't making more savings, given how infrequently we go out and how we don't buy much in the way of clothes or extraneous stuff. Well, he doesn't, anyway. I, on the other hand, have taken up... Continue reading

A week ago, I wrote a draft post about maybe being finished knitting my Noro scarf...but I wasn't sure so I didn't post. The trusted knitting lady at the yarn shop insisted I knit until all four balls were completely used up. That felt too long to me, but what... Continue reading

We don't really celebrate Valentine's Day, but how could I resist this? (I think my husband is a rather groovy dancer, don't you?) Personalize funny videos and birthday eCards at JibJab! Continue reading

I just wandered into the backyard to pick our daily figs, and THE GARDENERS HAD HACKED BACK THE FIG TREE! Almost all of the figs within reach are GONE. I called the manager, but regardless it's too late. The source of shade for my playing children and the source of... Continue reading

In the backyard of our new home grows a large, prolific fig tree. The heat of the summer has been working its magic, turning green buds to ripe figs for instant enjoyment by us and some frequent avian diners (and a mouse on at least two occasions we've seen). Thus... Continue reading

Today was the first day back to some sort of normal routine around here. My mother-in-law had been visiting since early December, but she returned home yesterday afternoon. This morning, my big girl started back to school for the year. Hubby was off to work, of course, which left me... Continue reading

For a long time now, I've been wanting to start a children's art group at home. It hasn't worked out in the past for various reasons, but for the last two weeks, we've managed to enjoy two really fun craft mornings at our home. The group dynamic is excellent. The... Continue reading

When I first started this blog, I was so excited about being incognito. I was excited to have a space to share my thoughts, send troubling questions out into the world, open discussions and debates...all while having it run freely disconnected from my real life, thus not having to edit... Glorious color! Perfect for the pattern! What a gorgeous gift! Bravo for the completion. 134 kitchener stitches would be a struggle for my sanity at any time of day and completely un-doable at 1:30am. Good on you for parting with it, though it would have been HARD. The consolation of "I can always make another one..." never feels very realistic, does it? What's next on the needles?

The Noro Striped Scarf is coming along pleasantly. Despite the initial vile color combos, the evolution of the skeins has been lovely. I'm really enjoying it now. The pattern is so simple, but excellent. I like that I cannot see the yarn carry between stripes. I like that it is... Continue reading

Just to follow-up on my last post, I did call all involved parties and try to make good. I got through to the gardener first, and I apologized for what was an overly harsh criticism of the work being done here. I explained better what had been my intention, but... Continue reading

I don't care for facebook, but if I did, my status update right now would be "is feeling abashed." The other day, I sent off a quick email to the estate agents of the house we are renting, giving a poor report card for the lawn and garden service who... Continue reading

I finished the scarf for my sister-in-law! My mother-in-law is visiting, and she was scheduled to fly back to Germany today. My goal was to finish the scarf on time for her to hand-carry it back. As it turns out, she opted to extend her stay, but I still met... Continue reading

I don't know if you've been monitoring the weather in Europe, but it has been bitterly freezing cold. My sister-in-law in Germany who rarely asks for anything has asked me to knit her a new scarf. I am happy she asked and was excited to get started...until the temperature here... Continue reading

We're about four hours into January 2nd here. I've been up with one of my girls since 2:30. She has finally settled down into peaceful slumber, but I'm now into that age-old mama question of whether it's worth trying to go back to sleep myself when I know the next... Continue reading
