Jo and Rus were a real pleasure to home exchange with. The communication was excellent throughout which made the exchange run very smoothly. Their home is truly an amazing retreat, very relaxing, exceptionally clean and comfortable. Jo and Rus kindly offered their Annex for our family members which was also comfortable and spotless. Tufts Clump is a gem in a wonderful and peaceful part of the country. The Alpacas are such characters and our children loved looking after them as well as Tink the cat. We would happily exchange again with Jo and Rus! Continue reading

With travel restrictions still in place, a growing number of Home Base Holidays members are discovering the pleasures of home swaps closer to home. Home swappers have always tended to prefer unique experiences (not merely sitting on a beach for two weeks every year!), whether it be swapping a rural home for a flat in the city to visit museums and the theatre or, as city dwellers, seeking out rural locations to enjoy fresh air, quiet open spaces, country walks and pubs. Although cost savings are a factor for those on a tight budget in choosing home exchange over expensive hotel rooms and holiday rentals, this is certainly not the only reason that swapping homes has become increasingly popular over the last few years (Home Base Holidays has been operating a home exchange service since 1978 and were pioneers in promoting the advantages, never more important than now). When planning a home swap holiday, the initial messages between you and the other home swapper are very important as they give you the chance to ask / answer questions so that you get a good feel for the proposed swap before you make a firm commitment. Therefore, never feel silly about asking questions, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem - taking extra care in these early stages is by far the best way to minimise any possibility of misunderstandings later on. Tourism and the environment is always a difficult balance. Of course, if you were to fly half way around the world for a three day home exchange, it could never be classed as 'eco-friendly'. However, home exchanging is an excellent way to help cut waste and make full use of our resources. It's so sad to see so many places around the world damaged by over development; knocking down neighbourhoods to build new hotels or shopping malls aimed at the tourist market. By swapping homes, you're not increasing the demand for hotel rooms but you are staying in a real home in a real neighbourhood ...often exploring and supporting local shops and markets. We had a wonderful ten day home exchange in Sarah and Tom's lovely home in Tuscany. The house is beautiful both inside and out - comfortable, full of character and with glorious views from every room. Continue reading

We have enjoyed 30 plus home swaps. Barbados was hot, Reykjavic was not! But all of them have been great in their own way and our kids have seen as many continents as UK counties – we have been really spoiled by the wonderful world of home swapping. We have enjoyed sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge in our host’s brother’s yacht; collecting warm eggs in Provence; the poshest spa you could ever hope to go to in Hong Kong; braais with neighbours in Cape Town and Spanish e pen friends to this day. I really could go on (Martinique was interesting ... ), but you get the idea. We love home swapping. Continue reading

Looking ahead to a post-lockdown getaway? Staycations (holidays within your own country) will again be a very popular option as people hold off on overseas travel. We've already started to see many of the UK's hotels, campsites and rentals booking up for the summer months and often at inflated prices. The good news is that you'll still find lots of very tempting home exchange holiday offers available through the Home Base Holidays website. Continue reading

If you love British period dramas, you have probably already discovered a very recent TV series, Bridgerton (on Netflix), set in Regency England but with a very modern slant on the story. One of the joys of travel that many of us have been missing is the chance to visit locations we’re familiar with from films or TV. Bridgerton is a feast for the eyes with the Regency city of Bath featuring prominently as well as several locations in London plus Painshill Park in Surrey and Castle Howard in Yorkshire. Click here to view some of the lavish locations and read about them and the Bridgerton storylines set in each in an excellent article published by Visit Britain. Continue reading

Home swap travel plans postponed until later in the year? With much of the world again in lockdown, many of us will be looking for fun, proactive ways to fill the time and keep our spirits up. If you're tired of the TV and it's too cold and wet for gardening, you may want to head to the kitchen and try recreating some of your favourite dishes from around the world. Continue reading

Even in this most difficult of years for travel and home exchange, we continued to add to our archive of information on every aspect of swapping homes. Unsurprisingly, questions we've received at Home Base Holidays, and many of the most read blog posts, relate to the pandemic and the affect it has had on home exchange plans. At the beginning of a new year, when we can hopefully start to look forward to better times (and home swaps) ahead, it's time to reflect on the past year. Following below is a list of the most read blog posts published on Travel the Home Exchange Way during 2020. Continue reading

It's been such a tough year for everyone that loves to travel and we all just hope that 2021 turns out to be a much better year. However, it's been so nice to see many Home Base Holidays members have, when the travel restrictions have allowed, still been able to enjoy a much needed home exchange getaway. Shown below is the excellent feedback from home swappers Cat & James who swapped their townhouse in Bath for a few days in Laura's family home in North London. With both members being pet owners, this staycation swap enabled them to take their dogs on the exchange and also agreed to look after each others cats. Continue reading

With people in many countries and regions facing travel restrictions, many of us are having to focus on safe ways to scratch the travel itch while not venturing far from home. So, if home swap holidays are on hold until 2021, you could use this time to get out and explore your local area - become a tourist in your own town. Going for a walk or bike ride is a great way to lift your spirits, get some exercise and also take in some of the nearby sights. Getting out for a safe wander is also a good opportunity to support some of the small local businesses - so go out, grab a coffee and explore! Continue reading

I have an apartment in Prague and am looking to spend 1-2 months in English speaking country from March/April 2021.
