We have a traditional cottage in Devon which we have been successfully holiday letting for many years. However, we are becoming more and more disillusioned with the holiday letting industry, with huge multinational corporations taking over the market and charging extortionate prices to us the property owners as well as the potential guests themselves. We are therefore looking at other options to make the property work for us and are very interested in home swapping. Continue reading

We swapped to Teresa's lovely apartment set in a charming town of Vilaller in the heart of the Pyrenees. The surrounding area was stunning with plenty of lovely scenic strolls right from the doorstep. There were lots of excellent longer walks available nearby in the beautiful Aiguestortes National Park. A perfect location for a relaxing family holiday. Continue reading

We love hearing trip reports from Home Base Holidays members and it's so rare to hear of any issues. We chatted with neighbors, shopped at the market down the block, became pals with the owner of the café at the corner, hopped on and off street cars as if it were no big thing. All this cost little more than airfare: We were doing a home swap. While we were enjoying the benefits of a home swap in a new city, our exchange partners were living happily in our suburban Bay Area home. Continue reading

Gardens, just like homes, come in all shapes and sizes, with styles unique to the owners (part of the fun of home swapping is trying out a lifestyle different to your own!). Some homes can look like something from a fancy interior design magazine, while at the opposite end, there are homes that might look rather cluttered and dated. However, the vast majority of home swap offers are somewhere in between - they're simply nice, normal, tidy homes that are lived in rather than sterile show rooms. Gardens are the same, some might have the keenest gardeners to keep them pristine, with not a single weed allowed to spoil perfect lawns or flower beds. Other gardens may have a patchy bit of grass with evidence of many football games and fun, or with overgrown bushes and trees blocking the sun. Continue reading

We are very aware that our home swap community encourages people to travel and so, as a responsible business, Home Base Holidays always urge our members to use the service thoughtfully, limiting air travel especially, to drastically reduce the effects of travel on global warming. The heat dome that hovered over the vast area of western Canada and much of the USA recently, bringing dangerously high temperatures followed by hundreds of forest fires, should be a wake-up call. Reducing the effects of climate change can no longer be delayed by governments whatever the cost, and we must all do our part to reduce our carbon footprint. Continue reading

It was a big ask, can we arrange a home swap staying in Sally and Jerry's amazing home in Kandy, Sri Lanka ...oh, and can we have a wedding there too? Our home swap hosts, Sally and Jerry, were just so fantastic and helped us have the most magical day. Their home is stunning; it's set in the middle of a tea estate with spectacular views, a large garden with swimming pool, stream, lawns and fruit trees - it was the most perfect wedding venue. Be the kind of home swap host we love by writing a great home user guide. A user guide not only helps guests enjoy their stay, it conveys a clear message: “We want you to enjoy your stay!” It has the added benefit of helping to keep you from being bombarded by texts and phone calls while you’re exploring the Galapagos or touring the lights of Paris. Continue reading

We had a fabulous stay at Danielle and Austin's house in Buxted. This was our first home swap and they made it incredibly easy to organise - their communications were always fast and friendly with nothing being too much trouble. On the day we started the swap, they had taken the trouble to leave some groceries for us and some milk etc. in the fridge - greatly appreciated when you are arriving late at an unfamiliar place.
