Understandably, some people will not yet feel ready to make firm travel commitments. However, it's a good time to start new conversations with Home Base Holidays members so that you can begin penciling in your home exchange plans for 2021. Check out the latest Home Swappers travel newsletter. Continue reading

I have an apartment in Prague and am looking to spend 1-2 months in English speaking country from March/April 2021. However, I use an electric wheelchair and so it's important that I find accommodation that is suitable. I'm interested in arranging a home swap but will I find accommodation that meet my requirements? Continue reading

Thanks to everyone that sent in their fabulous photos in our recent travel photography competition to win an Amazon Echo Dot. We received so many lovely holiday photos and home swap trip reports, making it very hard to select a winner. However, Alison's photo (above) from their July 2020 home exchange in Suffolk was chosen as the winner of the Echo Dot. Continue reading

During the current uncertainty over travel worldwide due to Covid-19, with guidelines and restrictions likely to continue to fluctuate for some time, many members won’t want to make firm commitments to exchange just yet. However, this is a great time to start contacting others in areas of interest to suggest a home swap, on the understanding that dates cannot be finalised just yet.. Continue reading

We've received lots of inquiries from people new to home swapping but looking for travel options that are budget friendly and safe ways to enjoy that much needed getaway. It's quite common that the inquiries are from people thinking about staycationing this year but, on looking, have found many of the campsites and holiday rentals already fully booked. The good news is that there are still plenty of holiday home swap offers available for this year and beyond through the Home Base Holiday website. Continue reading

Staycation holidays are continuing to prove particularly popular as we cautiously step out of lockdown. Staycations are where you holiday within your own country rather than travelling abroad. As a result, many of the UK's campsites and rental properties have already been fully booked and often their prices substantially increased. However, you'll still find plenty of holiday home swap accommodation offers available and, by choosing to swap homes, you'll enjoy free holiday accommodation along with all the space, comfort and safety of a home from home. Continue reading

Home swapping has always helped Home Base Holidays members step away from the busy tourist trail and enjoy the space, comforts and safety of a home from home. As the world starts to slowly reopen for travel, many of us will be wondering what steps we need to take prior to a swap. To help make sure your home exchange guests are safe while staying in your home, we’ve compiled these cleaning guidelines. Continue reading

With travel restrictions easing in many countries, we've seen a big increase in members looking to arrange much needed getaways. 'Staycation' home swaps within our own countries are proving particularly popular. Country cottage, a place by the sea or a city break? Continue reading

It’s been quite a surreal few months. Although everyone has been doing an excellent job of turning negatives into positives (baking sourdough bread, brushing up on a new language, struggling into yoga positions, or just binge watching Netflix), lockdown has been a tad tough and I think we’re all itching to start planning our next home swap getaway. Whenever it happens, that first post lockdown trip is going to be extra special! Continue reading

Staycation home swaps: we've all been following the ever changing travel restrictions with an eye on whether our summer holidays can go ahead. However, with talk of quarantine periods, it's looking likely that international travel will be slightly slower to open up. On balance, arranging a home exchange 'staycation' sounds quite appealing. We're expecting a big uptake in people looking to arrange their next home swap getaway closer to home - how about a country cottage or perhaps somewhere by the sea this August? Continue reading

The past few weeks have been strange (and extremely frightening for anyone faced with Covid-19 symptoms) and, for everyone, a steep learning curve, doing our best to stay safe and well and adapt to a different, albeit hopefully temporary, way of life in lockdown. We've had so many lovely messages from Home Base Holidays members letting us know what they have been up to and even just to check that we're safe and well. It's been genuinely heartwarming, and it's been so lovely to the generosity shown by the many members that have offered free holiday stays in their homes to healthcare / frontline workers via the My Travel Pledge campaign - thank you so much! Continue reading

Thank you so much to all the Home Base Holidays members that have come forward to be a part of the #MyTravelPledge campaign. It's been so incredibly heart warming to see so many members offering free holiday stays to NHS staff / healthcare workers for when it is safe to travel again - you guys are amazing! Continue reading

As families around the world bunker in amid the Covid-19 pandemic, we've seen so many uplifting examples of neighbourly love. Be it the thousands of people volunteering to help the vulnerable in the community, neighbours coming to their windows and doorsteps to cheer on our heroic healthcare workers and, of course, the wonderful heartwarming videos from Italy where people of all generations have taken to their balconies to sing and play musical instruments. The wonderful scenes in Italy were nationwide from Sicily to Milan and provide a beautiful insight into the Italian spirit. We were sent these two lovely photos from Home Base Holidays member, Valerie Walsh, from her home in the Medieval hillside village of Ceriana, Italy. Continue reading

With many of us now on lockdown and home swap plans postponed, we're all having to adapt and find ways to keep our spirits up. Our home exchange travels may be on hold for now, but there are still ways to scratch that travel itch without leaving our homes. Shown below are some of our favourite virtual tours and wildlife cams. Continue reading

With information and advice on the Coronavirus (Covid-19) changing almost hourly, and countries at different stages and approaches to dealing with it, it is a particularly difficult time for anyone travelling or planning to travel in the near future. It’s understandable that for many people, travel plans are on-hold for now. Continue reading

In a couple of weeks we're setting off to England on our first home exchange - we're very excited! I wonder if it is standard practice to bring a gift to give to the family we are swapping with? This hadn't occurred to us and then someone mentioned it, so now we're wondering what other members do. Thanks, Sue (British Columbia, Canada) Continue reading

When someone is being interviewed in their home office for a TV news report, do you ever get side-tracked from listening, trying to read the titles of books in a bookcase behind them? If you do, you are very likely to also be eager to check out the books in your home swap hosts’ home, perhaps looking for common interests, or something completely different from your normal reading matter to dip into. There are always predictions of trends in travel, whether it be that particular countries or areas grow in popularity or, now that we are more environmentally conscious of the impact on the climate of long-haul flights and wasteful hotels, with rail travel and holidays closer to home becoming more popular. This is the second year in a row we've arranged a Christmas holiday home swap. I'd usually think about home swapping in the spring or summer, but a couple of years ago we received a very tempting home exchange offer in Suffolk for a couple of weeks before Christmas - we took up the offer and enjoyed it so much that we arranged a Christmas exchange in 2019! We had a wonderful 3 week home swap in Sarah and Peter's home in South Burlington, Vermont. As the home exchange agreement was made well in advance we had plenty of time to get to know each other via messages and Skype. Sarah is an absolute perfectionist to detail and arranged everything for our trip to go as smoothly as possible. Continue reading
