Autumn is here and I am looking forward to yet another home exchange holiday. My last exchange was in Stroud, which I fell in love with straight away! I've visited the Cotswolds many times but never Gloucestershire, though I felt I knew it well thanks to reading books by Laurie Lee. Stroud is beautiful and more than lived up to expectations. Home exchanging has allowed us to travel further and more frequently without the pain of accommodation costs usually associated with holidays, where a real sense of community can be experienced that is far removed from traditional tourist sites and which can be a common feature of time spent abroad. Many Home Base Holidays members are happy to look after cats (and often other pets) during a home swap. It’s ideal not to have to disrupt a cat’s routine and, although notoriously independent creatures, most cats appreciate some attention from whatever humans are sharing their home! Families who don’t have pets often enjoy having a cat (and introducing children to caring for an animal) without the long-term commitment and expense of owning one. Continue reading

Thinking about trying home exchange travel? Home exchange is different from conventional hotel or rental travel where you simply select your dates and location and book a stay. A good home exchange means meeting the needs of both exchanging parties, establishing good communication and trust, and welcoming your exchange partner as a friend and guest in your home. So it was with Barbara and Iain, friends who would leave no stone unturned in making our holiday in their top floor luxurious flat hugely enjoyable. Continue reading
