2 Herschels bagged on the 21st August. At the top is the open star cluster NGC 6939, and lower right is the faint galaxy NGC 6946. It took about 40 minutes to track down the cluster and to sketch it, and another 20 minutes to find and record the galaxy.... Continue reading

This was one of those wonderful unexpected sessions. The forecast was for cloud all night but stepping outside at 10.00 I saw clear skies. Tranparency was poor so I caught up with some open clusters in Casseopeia; seven, actually! Here's the Owl Cluster (ET Cluster) And the other 6: Continue reading

It took me 3 nights to track down NGC 6207. It turns out I was looking in the right place but the slightest interference from light - in this case the Moon - destroys any chance of seeing it. It's very faint, at a magnitude of 11+. It may well... Continue reading

This is one of the most famous planetary nebulae in the northern skies. My sketch doesn't do it justice, but again is a fair approximation of the view through the 10" scope a few nights ago: Continue reading

Intense colour, accurately recorded here. Slightly fuzzy at the edges but no detail visible and uniform brightness. certainly one to revisit! Continue reading

A real beauty this one. No detail visible in the structure of the nebula, but the colour was wonderful, and clearly graduated towards the centre. Continue reading

Back in December 2007, I started the Herschel 400 challenge. Here's what I said at the time: I've recently embarked on The Herschel 400. This is a long-term astronomy project to identify 400 galaxies, star clusters and nebulae. Sir William Herschel was the top astronomer of his day; with the... Continue reading

I couldn't get down to the pits on Monday 9th June, but went the next morning at 6.00am. It was another lovely sunny morning with warblers singing loudy. A great start to the day! The highlight was this Reed Warbler who seemed happy to show himself while he sang. This... Continue reading

I think this is the first time I've seen one close up. It looked huge, at least an inch long, Wiki says workers are 18–24 mm. It also says "The pain from the sting may persist for several days with attendant swelling" so maybe getting so close wasn't a good... Continue reading

Today, early morning, was my first day at the Paxton Pits and it was love at first sight. What a beautiful and special place! Kingfisher flew past on Hayling Lake, then saw another on Rudd Lake in the bushes. Close up for a second, then flew off. Continue reading
