I have to agree that indie means NON big record company. For BB to be launching this service shows they are desperate. As for the Myspace thing, that shows they have some sort of vested interest in see the site rise from the ashes.... sad.

Billboard Targets Indie Artists With New Pro Service
Billboard has launched a new subscription-based service that targets indie artists and their entourage. The service, Billboard Pro, offers personalized artist analytics that track online and social network activity, airplay, and sales, among other things. Subscribers also gain access to editor...
I would love an unbiased opinion about my new work, but without comments and seeing a breakdown of each, it's a waste of money in my opinion. I need to know what WOULD make it a great song in their eyes, not that they don't "like it" because they listen to primarily Hip hop or Country....

How Artists Can Get Feedback On Their Music
Want feedback on your music? Brian Hazard tests out Soundout, a music service that compares your song to 50,000 others from major and indie labels to tell you how good your track is. The service has a guaranteed 95% accuracy, but Brian Hazard reveals that there may be some flaws in the service...
I like having my MP3's RIGHT where I have them... I MAY use a locker to store them electronically JUST IN CASE of a HD failure or something like that...
The Post Consumption Fan Meets Amazon Locker
The race to the cloud heated up yesterday as Amazon jumped the gun on Google and Apple and got a running start. Expect responses from the latter companies soon. This increased emphasis on music lockers, however, could have unintended consequences that actually make the record industry worse o...
I totally agree with the article... I see most of my own friends and relatives won't look at most posts on FB if they don't pertain to them directly... Not enough time in the day to go thru all your FB posts!

Only 10% of Your Friends See Your Facebook Posts, And Only 1% Like It.
Post by: Robin Davey, Head of Music and Film Development at GROWVision. How do I know this? Well I conducted a simple experiment that you are all welcome to replicate. I simply posted on my wall asking anyone who saw the post to like it. Of my 913 friends, 93 responded by clicking the like b...
It seems this is a hot topic for some reason when it should ring true. ANYTHING you do that is independent takes time, money and determination. If you want to open your own ANYTHING (pizza joint, strip club, band) you gotta work hard at it and go 110%!

What It Really Means To Be A Working Musician
This post is by Jason Parker of One Working Musician. As the title of my blog suggests, I pride myself on being a working musician. This year marks my 10th anniversary of making a living through my music and I couldn’t be happier with how my life has turned out. When I quit my day job in 2001 ...
The jury's still out for me with the subscription services. I'm concerned with royalties and artist rights being lost in translation with these things!

1 Million Subs - Spotify Now Top Paid Music Service
It's official: Spotify now has 1 million subscribers which makes it the largest paid music service in the world. Its closest competitor is Rhapsody at 750,000-subscribers. According to Peter Kafka at Media Memo, Spotify reached this mark about a month ago, but is only now announcing it. This...
I for one ask people to pirate my music. It's a losing battle to ask people to not do it, as it is like a losing battle to talk to a brick wall... instead, I want to get something out there in hopes of getting great paying gigs and praying those fans that like the free stuff would like to support my premium quality songs that cost ALOT to produce. If not, then at least I could get my message out there and may change an opinion or view about life.

Are You Past The Whole “Music Piracy” Thing?
Last week, a reader confessed in a comment that it surprises them to still read about "music piracy" on Hypebot. They think it's an issue that we should've evolved past by now. Given that Hypebot is a news blog, there's a certain amount of piracy coverage that we must have. If a new and inter...

1 Simple, Yet Effective Facebook Marketing Tactic
This post is by digital music marketer Kyle Babson. Occasionally I’ll see an artist execute a simple idea or marketing effort and think “why didn’t I think of that?” Matisyahu uploaded the photo below to his Facebook fan page with an encouragement for fans to tag themselves in the photo if the...
I think that one man's trash is another man's treasure. To critisize is to lay your opinions about the good, bad, and ugly about a particular thing you are contemplating. If the person is honestly criticizing a material, it shouldn't show bias, but fact based on the listening experience of the critic at that time.

How Music Criticism Influences Fan Opinion
"Bitter attitudes are surprisingly common in the trade; music journalists who play the part of hard-bitten cynics think their sarcasm lends authority to their opinions, when in fact it adds meanness to what should be a lighthearted game. There's nothing wrong with offering criticism and hard t...
It seems to me that the internet is a venue for those who won't show face to say whatever to whomever whenever they want to. I have a BA in Philosophy and understand that if I go to a person's online periodical, I do so with the understanding that it is written by a person. If I don't like what that person says, I simply don't partake. That's why I don't watch Fox News! Seriously though, don't let the busters get you in a frenzy. If you weren't getting some sort of negative feedback, then you aren't doing it right!

Being Wrong Doesn’t Matter, Being Curious Does.
Before we get back to our regularly scheduled programming, i.e. the music industry deathwatch, social media wizardry, and gentle major label bashing, I need to clear something up. Right here. Right now. In the comments, a reader said that if I continue to make bold predictions and declare t...
I agree 100%. I am looking at just the local scene here in FL and in Charleston, SC where I used to live, and there are alot of musicians, me included, that make a living off of music and the scene. The big, bad wolf, or the music "industry" makes it seem like if they are not able to afford their limos and big houses anymore, somehow that means the musicians they have made money off of are now "hobbyists". I think that is not only rude, but a crock of BS. I say let the giant fall on it's face and give that middle class the chance to be heard!

Will Music Be A Hobby in 5-10 Years?
“Can you put food on the table with music? Probably not. I see music as a really great hobby for most people in five or 10 years. I see everybody I know, some of them really important artists, studying how to do other jobs.” – John McCrea, Cake, NPR. Note the messenger, but please share your...
I have to disagree. Indie music is huge right now with alot of indies taking home GRAMMYS. These get recognition not from the internet alone, but from LOCAL RADIO stations getting their CD and throwing it on and taking opinions from the masses. This trend will be hard to kill, even if you are in your connected car. Most children 15 and under still listen to radio because it is FREE and radios are cheap. They are the ones spending allowance on mp3s CDs and other things like tshirts.

Why The Connected Car May Kill Local Radio
In the past, I have made the case that the connected car may kill traditional radio, because the addition of apps like Pandora and MOG will give it heavy competition. These apps may not kill radio, but it would be the first time since the rise of the personal music collection and satellite ra...
Art is Art. Promotion of that art should be what's on the table here, or anywhere for that matter. If Lady Gaga wants to use the mantra "any publicity is good publicity" then so be it. I think that IS her style: Fame Monster. I may not like it because she makes WAY more money and is more famous, but that's MY problem to deal with. The business is changing, but not before LG has her way with it first!

Will Lady Gaga End The Music Business? (Again...)
This post is by Robin Davey of The Hoax and The Bastard Fairies. Interview. Lady Gaga isn't holding back, her new record is coming out and she wants everyone to know. With the fastest selling number one in iTunes history, and her new video amping up hits on Vevo, it seems an unstoppable forc...

Major New Facebook Comments System: The Good, The Ads & The Ugly
Just days after a major change to its Like system, Facebook launched a robust new Comment plugin for blogs and web sites. TechCrunch, GigaOm and others we're quick to juimp aboard, but it's now clear that the new Facebook plugin comes with several limitations. For starters, there's now no opti...
He does have some great points. I am in the middle of recording an album and I would love for it to be paid for, but my main intent is to reach the hearts and minds of listeners and tell my story. I am putting free versions of the songs out there for the public, but the premium will be for premium listeners who would like to support my music.

"Music Is Not Dead – But This Revolution Is Dangerous... It's Lethal" – Peter Guber
Music is not dead, but this revolution is dangerous... It's lethal. These thoughts come from Peter Guber, author of the new book Tell to Win. In this video, there are several great and interesting points made by Gruber, save for, the entire middle section where he wrongly compares music piracy...
I have just had this brought up by one of my friends in my own songwriting. She told me all my songs have something to do with a girl. I have had some highs and lows in my relationships, and I guess that is where all my raw emotion and feeling comes from, so I have to agree!

Striking the Chord – Why Lyricists Matter
Lyricists possess the ability to distill complex situations and emotions into sixteen syllable couplets. Most importantly, they possess the capacity to strike a chord in us, the listener. Why is that? Lyricists cut themselves deep down, often just for the sake of seeing themselves bleed. For s...
