I enjoy playing instruments far more than I enjoy playing video games, but I remember spending hours upon hours playing air guitar pretending I was better than I really was and don't deny that I enjoyed doing so. It was just as much fun, I think, without a joystick. Imagination is such a glorious thing.
xkcd addresses the rock band haters
Last night, Ryan and I played Rock Band for a couple of hours, taking turns playing guitar and drums. We're both sore today, and it was entirely worth it. The point isn't to play real instruments. The point is to pretend that you're in a rock band, and have fun while you do it. Our final...

Seamus Heaney's Translation and reading of Beowulf. His translation isn't literal, being considered by some as more of an interpretation because it attempts to capture the spirit of the original poem as it might have been performed over 1,000 years ago. Any fan of Tolkien will enjoy this work, and recognize in it the elements of myth that would later become King Theoden and the men of Edoras. Hopefully the new movie will generate some more interest in the real tale.
Mythology for kids
I read a post at GeekDad this morning about Beowulf and introducing mythology to kids. It reminded me of an an awesome book that I used to introduce Ryan and Nolan to mythology when they were in 3rd and 1st grade called Classic Myths to Read Aloud. The book collects "Great stories of Greek an...

Wil - thanks for the heads up on this series. The first episode was excellent. I will certainly be talking this one up to all my sci-fi buddies.
this is why television sucks
I know I'm supposed to be on vacation, but I'm reading Fark while I wait for everyone else to wake up (I'm staying with friends until I move to a hotel later today) and I just came across an article that can't wait until I get back from Vegas to post (but I did set to publish later today, becaus...

Perhaps a bit OT, but I just discovered the cross-platform app called Songbird , an open source iTunes replacement based on Mozilla code! Although it's no Amarok, it has potential to redefine how music lovers experience music on the web. ...and Amarok isn't ready for prime time on OSX yet - though it is supposedly possible.
Geek in Review: Rockin' the Linuxburbs
It almost seems anti-climactic to release the Geek in Review, since I've been talking about it for several days, but it's up Wil Wheaton's Geek in Review: Rockin' the Linuxburbs: Eventually, I hosed the installation with careless use of conflicting software installs and other silly uses of sudo t...

I've always been more of a Trekkie than a... Wookie? but I always thought that part with the sandperson shaking his stick over his head was looped!
I can't believe they dissed you again. Just try to keep remembering that you're one of the young ones - someday you'll be one of the only ones left to interview, so you'll be a shoe-in.
beyond the final frontier
I watched Star Wars: Empire of Dreams last night on the History Channel. I highly recommend it for any Star Wars fan, even -- no, especially -- if you're one like me who is simply stunned (and a little sick) that George Lucas recently declared Empire Strikes Back the worst of all the Star Wars mo...
