Congratulations Ben!
Wednesday Morning Rundown
Hoosiers "then and now" (via Aaron Foster) The Doughnut Vault in Chicago sells fresh, baked pastries from 8:30 in the morning... until they run out Our Des Moines creative meet-up has 52 people and counting with 21 days remaining Just read Simon Sinek's Start with Why and Michael Eisner's book ...
"I don't know what Ringo did."
Once again, the drummer gets no respect.
Team of Rivals
Okay, not rivals, but... Ains and I used to assess organizational teams using Myers Briggs and found that most of them tend to hire similar personality types. They call it "chemistry" or "working with friends" but really it's just multiplying their weaknesses. Finding the best person gives way t...
I don't know Ben. It's kind of hard to feel sorry for you. It's Chicago after all. :)
It Begins Again in Chicago
There is no place like Chicago in September when the warm summer air is hanging on for dear life, Michigan Avenue is lined with tulips, and farmers markets take over the streets on Saturday mornings. It's when we host STORY. But all of our preparation for the event takes place in the cold blas...
To any of the applicants reading this, I would just add to what Ben has written that the story of Joseph in the Old Testament will probably parallel what your experience will be like.
Joseph had big dreams. But he had to deal with nightmares (being sold by his brothers into slavery, falsely being accused of rape, thrown in prison) before his dreams came true.
It won't be an easy journey, but it will be worth it.
The Terror of Pursuing a Dream
This week, I start processing applications for Dream Year. So far, I'm blown away by the caliber of these people and their ideas. After two years of this, I've come to see that the most common response to an "acceptance" into the program is not necessarily elation... but terror. Sheer holy terro...
Awesome. I was going to ask how I could get more of these. We live in such a digital world, but I think there are times when people are more apt to take a closer look at something when they can physically hold in their hands.
I'm going to give these to church leaders in town.
1,000 Premieres Brochure in your Mailbox
If you'd like to help spread the word about One Thousand Premieres, enter your address on this form, and we'll send you 10 brochures that you can give to friends, your small group, your pastor, etc. We can't do this without your help. Let me know here.
Well, I guess I will make the drive up to Atlanta when you go there which I assume is a given. Right? :)
Twitter Clusters
I admit it. I'm horrible at Twitter. Keeping up. Replying when my mind is on other things. Responding to interesting tweets... But give me a meet-up, a coffee appointment, a gathering in person... and I'm exhilerated. I discovered a great site called Tweetake which lets you download all of your ...
Of course there are no direct flights from ORF to Florida.
I hate this state.

The Case for Faith is actually quite good though it is a documentary so I don't even think it should be listed here.
Here's a question: Why isn't 'The Book of Eli' listed? I guarantee they wouldn't qualify it as Faith & Spirituality movie though it expresses the value of prayer better than any of the lame Left Behind movies ever could.
This is Embarrassing
The top 25 movies on Netflix under 'Faith and Spirituality.' If this isn't a call for submissions I don't know what is.
IMO = in my opinion
:)
The Art of Getting Rejected
I'm the king of getting rejected. For every one incredible "yes" I get, there are at least eight "no's." Yesterday was quite the monumental day for that. Three things are going on here: 1. God has a better plan. For God to carry out his better plan, he has to get rid of our mediocre plan. God pu...
"My job is to help them not lose heart and keep their eyes fixed on Jesus."
That's the best part of this entire post IMO.

Umm..need a photographer for this event?
This sounds awesome. I've enjoyed watching some of the videos from The Gospel Coalition with Pastors talking shop so this should be great.
Enter the Elephant Room
I've been working for a long time with the amazing people at Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago on a new project slated for March 31, 2011. Pastor James MacDonald leads a church of 13,000 on five campuses with scores of "Harvest Bible Chapel" church plants all over the country. It's the best mode...
I am so looking forward to this. The week of January 17th is huge for me. Career transition to self employment starts on the 17th and then hitting the road on the 20th for Nashville.
I feel like a little kid anticipating Christmas.
The Placid Christian Life
Christianity looks very different in the context of placidness than it does in adventure. Without any fear, breath-taking risk, stress or agony, we only give God access to the very superficial emotions of our human experience. But when you're leaping at a impossible task, when you've put yoursel...
Every boss needs to ask: "What about me frustrates my team?" No one else can safely ask that question.
Hah! My boss would never ask himself that question because he doesn't think on that level. That's part of why I'm leaving in 3 weeks and going out on my own.
Wednesday Morning Run-Down
Have gotten 2-1/2 responses on the Easter Experience idea. =) Five churches is my fleece... so we'll see. Don't forget you have until Christmas night to get $50 off the Dream Year weekend in Nashville with discount code FALALA. I'm bringing Ainsley and the boys Dream Year participant Kate Schmi...
My offer of $50 to somebody still stands, so this is an opportunity for one person to save $100.
Not sure how you want to handle that Ben, but it's there.
Bodily Functions Will Resume Shortly
I finished writing the Dream Year weekend notebook on Sunday (whew =) and couldn't help but include this ESPN interview with Malcolm Gladwell about defying your fears... “I talked for a long time when I was doing Blink with a fascinating guy named Gavin DeBecker, who runs one of the top perso...
I can't pay full price for somebody to attend the Dream Year Weekend, but I am willing to contribute $50 to somebody that wants to attend. 4 more people jump in and you can give away a ticket to somebody.
Wednesday Morning Run-Down
Feeling rather sentimental in the last round of Dream Year calls this month with the 2010 class. Writing briefs for each of them. So proud of their achievements. I'm sorry, but this looks like an amazing movie And this book was great, can't wait to see the movie Hands-down best design blog: Fas...
I don't know what those 8bit guys do either and I've worked with them.
Evolution of Being Taken Seriously

That's great. Number 11 literally made me laugh out loud.

This is great Ben. I am signed up to attend the retreat in January. To be honest, I keep getting to the end of the Dream Year application (I've started to fill it out about 7 or 8 times) and then after a while, I close out my browser.
To be 100% honest, the thing holding me back more than anything is the money. $2400 is not a lot for what is offered, but considering I am leaving my full time job at the end of this month to go out on my own (doing IT consulting and photography), the 'fear factor' is so hard to get beyond.
Oh well. I have a day to get over it.
My Own Dream Coming Into Fruition
Three years ago, I read The Four Hour Work Week because it sounded so sensational. It was a NYT bestseller, so I knew it had to offer something of value. Turns out, it was mostly full of fluff. But there was one principle that radically shook my world - you can replace your salary with alternati...
I made it official. Ordered my Dream Year Weekend ticket this morning. I'm really excited about this. Look forward to meeting you Ben!

Headed to Chicago tomorrow to meet with the Harvest team... and do a little venue recon for STORY 2011 How to accept credit card payments on mobile devices Sign ups for the Nashville Dream Year weekend are heating up. Best rate ends Nov 30. Register here. Pete Wilson is one of our guest speaker...
Ben, Chicago is fine by me. It's a great city. I was just asking about the history of the event and what made you choose Chicago.
Worry for a Day
I'm going back to Chicago this month to scout new venues for STORY 2011. As a church planter, I learned that whenever there's a sudden change, God must be up to something better. You worry for a day, but then you put your mouth guard in, your cup on, and go after the land he's promised.
This may have been asked before, but why Chicago?

One of them is a real deviant. Right Justin? :)
Another one I recognize is Jerry Miner. I don't know him, but will have a chance to connect with him at the Catalyst Bloggers Meetup Wednesday evening.
Meet Some Dreamers
I love these people. Here is half of my amazing Dream Year class. And I can't stop having them photographed because they're so good looking. =) Give a shout if you know someone. These were taken by the extremely talented Ashley Porter
Interesting about 'Blue Like Jazz.' It's true though. If it would make a good movie, why can't they find somebody to bankroll it?

If you grew up in a legalistic church and now spend your time writing satire about it, we get it, we got it. Yaaawn.
I love this.
Wednesday Morning Run-Down
Still buzzing from Whiteboard. All of the speakers did an amazing job. And unlike 2008, this proved to be a regional gathering. 80% of attendees came from Virginia. We may be coming to a city near you... very soon. I have so many thank-you notes to write, I don't know where to begin. I'm surrou...
I wish stuff like this would come to Florida. Really.
Anyway, Ben you want to fix that Whiteboard link as you have it going to whiteboard.co
