Great article! I'm no grammar Nazi and I actually despise them, but I think the title of your post should be "This War CAN Be Won...an on-ground perspective...". That is unless you're trying to do a play on words and I just don't see it.
Great article though! I do believe however that the mix of corrupt afghani officials mixed with a tarnished 10 year view of the situation over there means that even if we do "win" over there it will still be a loss in history.
Just my two cents.
This War CAN Be Won...an on-ground perspective...
**Corrected Title** (I claim "blogging before breakfast!") US Army Special Forces Major Fernando Lujan just returned from more than a year on the ground in Afghanistan and offers his views on his Afghan allies, and their will to win. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/28/opinion/this-war-can-still...
Great post UJ.
What Not To Say
I've heard some good one's lately, like the female who empathized with the widow of a fallen service member by telling her that she had lost her dog the month before, but this bit of guidance needs to be spread far and wide: What Not To Say To Someone With PTSD It is a real issue, with real prob...

DADT is Officially Over
Yes, some of us (including me) didn't really care about the repeal of DADT, but it still doesn't mean you can't laugh at some of this stuff. And it didn't take but thirty seconds for the Navy to have the first news story about a gay officer jumping out of the closet and getting married (nice go...

You know, I actually like Stratfor a lot. The only thing that I didn't really like that has come from them is the book "The Next 100 Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century". It was way too much speculation and made me feel like I was reading a sci fi novel and not an detailed analysis of the global security situation for the next 100 years.
Haqqani Network ready to negotiate?
STRATFOR's Director of Analysis, Reva Bhalla, explains the melding interests of the Pakistan-Taliban-Haqqani triad as the United States attempts to negotiate its way out of the war in Afghanistan. [video removed due to auto-play issues] Video at link: http://www.stratfor.com?video_uuid=akyc9mm1&...
In land navigation, dont they call people who shoot an azimuth and just go straight to the point "Meat Missles"?

In basic training "Nuts to Butts" is going to take on a painful new meaning.

Thats pretty awesome. All we need now is a post about the Taliban getting Rick Rolled and we'll be all set.
Twitter Fight between I.S.A.F. and the Taliban
Jeffrey Schogol, the Stars & Stripes Rumor Doctor, sends us this interesting piece where ISAF is finally understanding Twitter uses - especially when it comes to countering the Taliban and Al Qaeda social media efforts. Check it out.

Exactly, the life expectancy of moderate muslim journalist in Pakistan isn't really a thing to be admired.
Good Sense From Pakistan, Of All Places
From Pakistan, of all places, Nayyer Khan of the Daily Times of Lahore, does the work of the angels in debunking the most popular Sep 11 nonsense there in a two part article, one and two. Khan has fun ridiculing the radical Urdu press in his country. Some excerpts: Osama bin Laden (OBL) att...

Blog World & Military Track
Okay, we just finalized the last panel for the military track at this year's Blog World and New Media Expo. There are a lot of changes and surprises this year, starting with the fact that it will be in Los Angeles Nov. 3-5. That's right, for all you types who just couldn't stand Vegas, this ye...
Damn UJ, you are just shedding the pounds.
I love the haters
I saw a bumper sticker that said that recently and I completely agree as y'all well know. When I go on RT to argue with the liberals there, I judge my performance by the amount of exasperation of the host and other guests and by the hater comments on YouTube (which show me the pure hate). Both a...
While I applaud the fact that you can come up with a word that rhymes with curmudgeon, your point is ridiculous. By your logic you are saying that anything that pelosi votes for that doesn't support your idea of pro America is anti veteran by default. That's like me saying that voting against digging for oil in the alaskan wildlife preserve is anti veteran.
Wtf is a crumonion anyway?

Update 7: Bill Simon, CEO of Walmart US. Imagine, you're the CEO of one of America's largest companies. Here to 'ask something of the Legion'. He served, and says it left a lasting impression on him. One surprising statement- how people line up at midnight at the end of the month, to shop f...
I can see we're starting to go in circles here.
Mr. Wolf wears big-boy pants
The same can be said for Senor Lechero. I'm not fighting anyone's battles for them. I'm calling out someone for saying that the poster is not producing facts while that person is trying to present fact without producing any himself.

She voted to reduce Navy and Air Force Appropriations. FACT
She voted to impose a timeline for withdrawal, which told the Taliban "Hang on just a little longer and we'll be out of here!" FACT
She voted to deny Airline Pilots the means of self-defense and the self-defense of their aircraft. FACT
She voted against the 2008 Iraq/Afghanistan funding bill in order to force her own political agenda. FACT
Those are military issues, not veteran issues. The original statement was that she doesn't support veterans.

1. Dont get me wrong, I have never voted for, given money to or campaigned for Pelosi.
2. I was referring more to SL calling out Mr. W for producing facts without substance, while doing the same thing in the next sentence.
3. How are the following anti veteran?
Voted NO on permitting commercial airline pilots to carry guns. (Jul 2002)
Voted NO on declaring Iraq part of War on Terror with no exit date. (Jun 2006)
Voted YES on redeploying US troops out of Iraq starting in 90 days. (May 2007)
Voted NO on authorizing military force in Iraq. (Oct 2002)

Instead of just talking shit, why don't you come up with some facts (AND SOURCES) of your own to disprove his statement. You MIGHT get taken more seriously. That way instead of appearing like the typical extreme right wing nut job that read that Pelosi is the anti Christ on some website, you can show that you can form a logical argument.

LIVE Blogging from Legion Convention- President's Speech
NOTE: I've added pictures from yesterday into the post in an update Now, back to our 'normal' updates... Update 10: Our final update of the day, I've been watching the procession of the 'lesser politicos' take the stage- from the Governor of Minnisota to the Mayor of Minneapolis, and others. ...
I hope you guys are having a good time out there. I've been trying to decide which organization to join, the American Legion or the VFW... still.
Anyways, your talk of heightened security reminds me of when President Bush visited the troops at Fort Hood. The event was to take place on the 1st Cav HQ lawn and man was security tight. Connexes were stacked high around the whole lawn. We got up a 4am to do a division march over to the 1st Cav side which should have taken 20 minutes at best but lasted a few hours. Metal detectors were set up and if anyone had so much as a gerber they had to toss it. There were security on top of the 1st Cav HQ roof gazing outwards. It's pretty amazing to see what goes into getting the President to a location so he can say a few words.

Who wouldn't love to see a military cage match between the ChiCom and AQ/Taliban....
We might see this sooner than later. Last year China bought the rights to do the digging in Afghanistan's recently discovered mineral treasure trove. Apparently there's anywhere from $1 trillion to $3 trillion (depending on who you ask) dollars worth of precious metals.
Since the U.S. has been fighting to set up a democracy in Afghanistan it only makes sense that the mining contracts go to China right?
Pakistanis show Chinese our Special Ops bird
Just lovely. Our "friends" the Pakistanis, the best allies money can rent, have apparently continued hedging their bets as far as who will be their sugar daddy. With the planeloads of loot we have been supplying them, which they tranship almost immediately to Dubai, in jeopardy they have continu...

I'll go ahead and assume that you didnt read the write up since towards the bottom (27 breaks down) JD wrote this At one point I shot the breeze with Brad and explained how a mid-life crisis led me to become a combat cameraman.

"Get married, start a family, work at a bank."

The progeny of the Welfare State
London is burning and the search is on for a way to avoid the bleedingly obvious, the welfare state has created a class off looters and moochers. Atlas Shrugged is actually some of the best political satire since Gulliver's Travels. Rand didn't know she was doing satire, but she created a perf...
