Part of my now routine process of converting natural images into graphic lines requires the physical tracing and inking of maps, prints and/or photos. When working through this particular part of WAVES, heavy-inking traces of the river from OS Map copies and Google Earth images, I stumbled across another interesting way of creating visual work that could be represented as sound. Heavy-inking on thin (240gsm) paper will inevitably seep through the page, so I work with multiple sheets underneath. The image shown here is one example of using the same sheet again and again, absorbing the ink that seeps through every line. Although I draw over the sketches in smooth, linear motion, not all of this ink reaches the sheet underneath. Therefore, with slightly turning the under-page after each stroke, I end up with remnants of solid graphics. Continue reading
