Partly out of nostalgia, partly out of a desire to feed my 11 year-old son and partly out of my craving for a giant, frosty margarita on a warm summer day, I dined at Benny's for the first time in 20 years last year. The table was sticky, the service was slow and the food was mediocre. Maybe I'm just old now and miss the hangover-curing properties of a Benny's breakfast burrito.

Alex, I know I've purchased dozens of records at the CBGB record canteen, but the only one I'm sure I bought at that joint was "Academy Fight Song" by Mission of Burma on the Ace of Hearts label. IIRC. I remember that I surprised to find such an influential record there for only $3 or $4.

I can't tell you how many records, bricks of blank cassettes, phono cartridges, headphones, stereo components, computers and other electronic ephemera I've bought there since I was a teenager. In fact, when I turned 16 I was allowed to take the train into NYC solo and visit my Dad at work. It almost always involved a short walk up Broadway to J&R, so I will always link my memories of J&R with my Dad.

Imagine if I didn't spend my formative years - and those paychecks - at those establishments (Bleeker Bob's and Second Coming, in particular). I would have had money for a nicer house and my son's college fund.
