As they took up arms and, in the phrase they commonly used to describe initiation into battle, went "to see the elephant," individual soldiers worried about their direct personal responsibility for the killing. Drew Gilpin Faust, This Republic of Suffering:... Continue reading

Lance Armstrong is lying, of course. What's interesting is that, like most people, he's doing it so poorly. Paul Ekman has found that only 5% of us are good liars but "most people get away with the lies they tell... Continue reading

Last week's local elections were "old-fashioned" according to De Volkskrant (in Dutch) because no campaign made significant use of new media. But even by old media standards, the marketing was very primal. The political parties were more concerned with defining... Continue reading

I'm happy to know that there are still people who share my '80s peeves and enthusiasms.

ne of interestingness' most attractive features is its non-judgmental character. Anything can be interesting, as long as someone thinks that it is. Interestingness does not discriminate against any subject or format. Billboards and novels get an equal hearing. But behind... Continue reading

Dear C., I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Not the loss of office, but the loss of stability that you are currently suffering. You should know that you are not alone. It may seem as though we... Continue reading

Most Awesome Bad Movie Ever. I have to agree with the Pope on this one. Though his concern over nature worship seems a bit overblown coming from an organization currently paying out billions after covering up and continuing to minimize... Continue reading

You've probably heard by now that Up In The Air is a very good*, thoughtful movie starring George Clooney as a man who fires people for a living and who mostly enjoys the muffled and disconnected life afforded by a... Continue reading

I cannot imagine a better title than There Once Lived A Woman Who Tried To Kill Her Neighbor's Baby. Really, how could that not be interesting? The book leaped the synapse from shelf to hand with immediate, chemical certainty. And... Continue reading

In retrospect, I can see that it was too much to expect a Republican Joy Division. The Republican party is too far gone. It has become...get ready...a rabid, senile, sclerotic rat, backed into a corner by its own paranoid visions,... Continue reading

When I saw this ad, I immediately thought, "It's Happy Fun Ball!" (And the You Tube comments show that I wasn't the first to have that reaction.) Then I began to wonder, what comes after reductio ad absurdum? The reduction... Continue reading

Yes. Not that their direction is especially constructive. More anger management than anything as constructive as a political movement or destructive as killing a bunch of people.

I think of being mesmerized as a zombie-like state in which the conscious mind slips into neutral, like being hypnotized. Perhaps stronger than interestingness in the degree of immediate enthrallment, but without engagement. There is no questioning or mental-model creation and manipulation. Just a mouth-hanging-open stillness. But really that's just my definition of the word. The kind of generativity that reflects interestingness arises relatively spontaneously in people's minds and is manifested in the ease and eagerness, the freedom, with which they imagine variations and transformations of something. Versus the VW/Twitter ad which is not about people freely improvising but mechanically taking data and "generating" one of a limited number of results. I'd say that brands that not only let you generate info, but that you just want to generate info about, are most interesting. (Maybe a better word than "information" here is "theories".) And thank you very much.
