New laptops, definitely. Ours are so old that the batteries don't really work and we have to keep them plugged in.

I am hanging this post on my wall. Amazing advice. And happy birthday to a beautiful girl.

Happy Birthday week! Mine is on Friday, so I am absolutely taking your commandments to heart. So this afternoon when my kids go to their rooms for nap/quiet time, I am going to read a book instead of all the tasks I normally do. And I'm not even going to feel guilty about it.

I so need an island. We enjoy the basement stairs, however, because we can hear the door open but they can't see us until we've had a few seconds to pull ourselves together.

I have never worked at a bank. The last time I worked in an office building was when I was in college. In 1991. As a teacher my response to not being able to wear jeans every day was to... Continue reading

I was looking forward to this movie, but the more I read the more I'm afraid it will taint my happy memories of the show. Vintage Valentino on a mom? Samantha desperate when she could have had Smith? I'm getting depressed just thinking about it.

I've gotten a kick out of this story too, although I thought they got to keep their extravagant house. Karma's such a bitch, isn't it? Anyway, I LOVE your Deadbeat Makeover show idea, I would totally watch.

I grew up in Ridgewood and my parents still live there (though not for much longer). It's not only the parking that is the problem for local merchants, though, it's the astronomical rents. That's why Marra's closed and why the Fokine Studio may close. You can't just blame parking for why so many places have closed or why independent merchants keep going to Glen Rock, Wyckoff and Allendale.

I wish I heard more stories like this before I went to college. Not that I was caught having sex. Oh no. I was caught after fooling around with a lacrosse player who passed out on top of me. That wasn't humiliating at all, either.

I went to a party at Harvard once. . . I am so revising my resume. But "What does Goddamnit mean?" is my favorite.I love your list idea.
That sounds exactly like our neighborhood.

I started out anonymous, but word got out. . .so now I'm kinda public. It has caused me to filter my content on occasion, but it's been worth it because I've been given some great post ideas but friends who are readers. As for my kids, I don't use their names, nor is my name on my blog or Twitter account. Hopefully that will keep things at bay when their friends start doing Google searches.

I am planning something radical. Something completely insane. Something that will alienate me from most of the other mothers I know. In fact, it may alienate me from most of the people I know. But I just can't control myself... Continue reading

I think it was the costumes that made it so much worse and more inappropriate than it should have been.

Great post and excellent points. I started drinking well before 21 . . . or 18. By the time I was away from home and surrounded by strangers at a college party, I knew enough about myself and alcohol to turn down shots. Too bad the girl who was hospitalized with alcohol poisoning had no clue that shots were dangerous.

We have a stuffed animal called "kitty" that all of our children use. We ordered 10, but then they stopped making them. Fortunately, because kitty is white, my kids are used to having her go in the washing machine so they know there are several of them that we rotate. This has no diminished their comfort power, though. My oldest is 5 and she has never slept without kitty. I think at 3 you can talk to him about cleanliness and maybe find a washable Eeyore together?

I am totally addicted. When the scenes are boring, I just try to figure out where they are - they don't live too far from me. But I have to admit I like New York better.

I agree with Varda, as an only I also say, "go for it!". Women are having children later and later and I can't imagine that anyone worthwhile would judge you for adding to your family. You're definitely not too old.

What a wonderful post. I am a "Glee" fan too and I cried during that episode. Have you ever read Geneen Roth? She has a lot of interesting things to say about women, food and shame.

I've never just blogged about my children, but I have noticed my blog posts are increasingly about other things as my kids get older. I've never been into the "all-kids-all-the-time" blogs.
