Notice the woman casually using her mobile phone to take a photo?, send an SMS? or update her calendar? From that perspective the whole picture looks like an ad saying, 'never miss a moment when out with friends...". I would love to expose this picture to a random sample of Americans and publish the results to the question, "What do you see in this picture!"

Amazing. I am leaving my job on 30 June. After 30 years in the biz, I'm taking a three month break and then pursuing business storytelling... more later! Good luck with your new ventures - your blog is one of my favorites. But why oh why no RSS feed (or am I missing it?)

if you have to ask, you will never know what's cool.

Sorry for my "ALL CAPS" response - common practice in our company when answering different questions within an email - not intended to 'shout' it out... I would love to explain further the 'why' behind some of the ideas you liked that were purposefully condensed per your brief... but will spare you the details! Thanks for this. Jerry
Sorry - it should have read, "I have NOT lived in America in nearly 20 years..."
TO LUCA: So are you saying Italy is the place for people who know how to consult on advertising??? On the Italian TV difference, I travel often and sometimes catch a moment of Italian TV on hotel cable - invariably in the evening I see scantily clad women prancing around a middle aged host. I have lived in America for nearly 20 years, but given what I read about the religious right there, no one could have that style of programing, could they?
Love the titles too - but can't really think that a brand is ever anything bigger than Action Man's smallest toe nail (if that)... The people in one's life outscale brands enormously. But when you're experiencing a brand it can seem like its personal - therefore big in some sense. But you know they're just brands, and well, real people are just real.

I think we should form a society of people who hate Februarys! We could have a month-long annual meeting (how about this February?) in someplace warm and sunny to analyze what's wrong with that wretched month!

Yes, I too am astonished with the phone being used to take photos in the midst of this chaotic and frightful situation... I even wonder if the photo we're looking at was taken the same way... I consult with a company that manufactures such phones and such extreme scenarios never really play into our thoughts and plans...
