peter, cool details about the haircut. My LI City lawyer daughter says she feels safe despite the uptick in stats for NY crime. She does say she hasn't ridden the subway or taken a taxi/Uber since March. She also says that NY is noticeably less congested. Of course, many are sheltering in place (or have no where to go since everything is closed) but also she feels a real sense that there are many, many people missing. Plenty of people have just up and moved out. She said that many in her circle are busy buying gift certs for restaurants to help keep them afloat till they can re-open and see larger number of customers again. Here is CA, I know of 3 nearby cities (Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Mountain View) who have a whole street shut to vehicle traffic in order to give space for restaurants to have outdoor seating. Of course, this only works if you have restaurant density.

btw, on the topic of DACA. I'm not arguing about much about what is the correct policy. But I would argue that presentation of how the issue gets resolved is important. I really do think there is a separation of traditional conservatives (99% of the folks here, includes me) and populist conservatives. That difference is, IMO, a big reason why Trump won in '16 but Repubs lost the HoR in '18. Sure, it's anecdotal but it seems to me that plenty of populists saw "that's not who we are" RINOs put the brakes on Trump initiatives and stood aside in 2018. If you are a populist, this would be a bad look: 1) Obama creates illegal DACA EO 2) Trump revokes the EO 3) SCOTUS denies Trump because they've read his mind and decided that he's only doing it because he's a mean guy 4) Trump gives up on DACA for free

I expect DACA could cause a considerable number of populist conservatives to sit out the election. Most JOMerz are fairly traditional conservatives. They'll add up pluses and minuses then vote Trump. Populist conservatives are less concerned with totting up issues and balancing opposing values. In the end, they don't depend on a savior President to do the work while they applaud from the sidelines. They expect it will be dirty, maybe bloody, and require people like them to do their share. I'd put our Mr Pin into the populist conservative category. (Why vote Trump if I can't depend on him?). I'd assign MissM to the more traditional conservative category (of course vote Trump, look at the alternative).

Candidate for PowerLine's Mirengoff "Worst Post EVER" https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2020/07/trump-commutes-roger-stones-sentence.php Commenter Yochanan reminds us of all the stuff Mirengoff left out-- 1. There was no justifiable predicate for investigating Stone 2. Müller targeted him to squeeze him to compose or seditiously induce Trump to obstruct. Things that should only happen in fascist states 3. Müller had a huge SWAT team do a raid in his home with CNN to scare Stone into cooperating by composing. Again something that should only happen in fascist nations. 4. Müller miraculously arranged for Amy Berman to be the judge . The same biased fascistic judge in the Manafort case. Amazing how he arranged such a random assignment, something that should only happen in a fascist nation. 5. Berman allowed and condoned a biased jury and put Stone on a gag order that further squeezed him financially to the point of bankrupting him to induce him to compose. Things that should only happen in a fascist nation. 6. After the completely biased jury convicts him the judge Freisler goes on a verbal tirade making unfounded accusations of the Russian Collusion hoax. Actions that should have disqualified her as a judge in ANY case and actions that should only occur in a fascist nation. 7. After it’s uncovered that the jury forewoman and others lied during selection and that she was a Democrat activist who was anti trump and anti Stone , the judge refuses to declare a mistrial. Something that should only happen in a fascist nation.

Since SCOTUS wouldn't let him rescind Obama's illegal Executive Order, perhaps Pres Trump intends to create his own EO for immigration and DACA and then rescind the parts he needs as bargaining chips to get Dems to do stuff. Then challenge SCOTUS to deny him the right to rescind HIS OWN executive order. Or maybe there's a different meaning to what's going on. Anyway: expect this to be in the news over the next week or so.

Some stuff on the DACA statement, via BJG blog. I've cut a lot out, using "..." to show gaps. President Donald Trump spoke with Noticias Telemundo anchor José Díaz-Balart in an exclusive television interview. Trump discussed immigration, his plans for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the impact of the coronavirus crisis on the Latino community among other issues. ... Here are excerpts of the interview about immigration and DACA. Quotes are from a rush transcript and subject to change. Rules of use: Mandatory credit as “Noticias Telemundo interview.” ..JOSÉ DÍAZ-BALART Mr. President ... you seem to be laser-focused on deporting DACA... PRESIDENT TRUMP I’m not. I’m taking care of DACA. I had a deal with the Democrats and they broke the deal. The DACA could have been taken care of two years ago, but the Democrats broke the deal. ... over the next few weeks, signing an immigration bill that a lot of people don’t know about. You have breaking news, but I’m signing a big immigration bill. ... I’m going to do a big executive order. I have the power to do it as president and I’m going to make DACA a part of it. But, we put it in, and we’ll probably going to then be taking it out. We’re working out the legal complexities right now, but I’m going to be signing a very major immigration bill as an executive order, which the Supreme Court now, because of the DACA decision, has given me the power to do that. ... If you look at the Supreme Court ruling, they gave the president tremendous powers when they said that you could take in, in this case, 700 thousand or so people, so they gave powers. Based on the powers that they gave, I’m going to be doing an immigration bill. One of the aspects of the bill that you will be very happy with, and that a lot of people will be, including me and a lot of Republicans, by the way, will be DACA. It will give them a road to citizenship ... I would say over the next four weeks.

btw, to give justice to Narc's 2:28 The "RIVM" organization looks semi-official. Dominantly funded by Dutch national/local gov'ts, the EU and the UN. However, not a CDC-like full governmental organization. In the Netherlands the social distance value is 1.5 meters, about 5 feet. Regarding kids, RIVM suggests NOT distancing kids up to 18 years old. Teachers of all grades and students in community colleges (and up) should comply with social distancing. That's how mild they consider the danger to kids. Here's the quote: Since children play a minor role in the spread of the virus, the 1.5 metre measure is less strict for young children: Children up to and including 12 years of age do not have to keep 1.5 metres apart from each other and from adults. This also applies to childcare and primary education. Young people aged 13 until 18 years old (i.e. 17 years old and younger) do not have to stay 1.5 metres apart from each other. In secondary schools, this applies to all pupils, regardless of their age. In secondary vocational education (MBO) and higher education, all students should stay 1.5 metres apart, regardless of their age Since adults play a greater role in the spread of the novel coronavirus, teachers need to stay 1.5 metres apart from others as often as possible.

DrJ: "MrsJ just cleaned our range" How did she clean it? Elbow grease, sprayed on chemicals, heated lemon water? It sounds like a classic though I confess to being in approval of newfangled insulation LOL You two are doing an excellent job of finding joy in the everyday details of your lives!

Ig, 2:28: "Dems are much better at crime than Reps" That's a good point. Over the past couple of decades, any Repub who not squeaky clean got exposed in the media. It's Darwinian. I bet we have (relatively speaking) about as clean a group of Repubs as ever in history (With politicians ... this is not a high bar). Meanwhile there is some amount of adaptive pressure to elect Dems who are more and more criminal. Otherwise, you get primaried and not re-elected. Because you're not delivering the goods to your voters. I don't think the adaptive pressure is quite as high among Dems as among Repubs. But I bet it exists.

"I think it's entirely possible, even probable, that: a) Trump, Barr, and Durham all feel that indicting people before the election wouldn't be helpful. b) They're right." That's reasonable and may well be correct. I'll say one thing though. It won't take the Dems 4 years to indict if they win in 2020.

Remember this inconvenient fact when University lawyers try to argue that the ONLY reason foreign students are being bounced for online classes is because Trump is mean. And vindictive. Via InstaPundit: ONCE AGAIN, THE MEDIA IS LYING: I’ve seen countless stories about ICE’s “new” student visa requirement barring student visas for students who would be taking only online classes. The idea that this is “new” is false. Foreign students are required to take a “full course of study” to fulfill visa requirements. The longstanding rule is that a study may take only one online class per semester as part of the full course of study. ICE *may* allow a student to take more than one online course, but any additional course must be taken in the physical presence of a university instructor. Here is the DHS webpage from 2012, in the Obama years: An F-1 student may only count one online or distance education course without the physical oversight of a school employee (or the equivalent of three credits) toward a full-course of study per academic term. F-1 students may be eligible to take more than one online class to maintain their status as long as the class is physically proctored or monitored by a school employee. ICE waived the rule for the Spring and Summer 2020 semesters due the Covid emergency. Given that Congress has now had four months to address the issue but has not, it’s not clear what the “emergency” would be that would allow ICE to ignore a binding regulation. In any event, given that the regulation is clear that foreign students may not stay in the U.S. on student visas if they are taking online only classes, and given that universities knew they may have to go all online this Fall, why are so many university “leaders” acting like the government actually enforcing the rule once the immediate emergency has passed is a complete surprise?

I think I saw kk post a few days ago. He's doing OK? Prayers for the GJim colleague daughter. How devastating. CH: "is Paul Mirengoof over at Powerline one of the most profoundly stupid people to ever walk the planet, or is it just me?" His sports writing is solid, of course. And my understanding is that he lives in an area of Maryland that is so blue, that even as a RINO squish he'd be considered Literally Hitler (tm) if his neighbors found out. That's all I can think of as an excuse, because his reasoning is feeble and his apprehension of the magnitude of the threat is entirely lacking.
On a nearby freeway overpass, someone had a small-ish "Black Lives Matter" sign, attached to a railing by tie wraps. Today, someone wrote "ALL" on a piece of paper and taped it over the word "Black". I wonder if the Sunnyvale police will run a battery of forensic tests to help track down the domestic terrorist LOL.
