Unfortunately the 1066MHz measurement doesn't really describe the clock speed of the memory bus, and there's a pretty substantial latency for accessing memory randomly. A good primer on memory technology (it's certainly no more complicated than most econ): http://people.redhat.com/drepper/cpumemory.pdf That said, memory speed has nothing to do with thrashing. I'd guess that Word is just doing lots of disk accesses, e.g. for loading dynamic libraries or data files. Open Activity Monitor and click on the Disk Activity tab near the bottom of the window to see how much the disk is being accessed.
