Political fodder
A question from the long-haired overfed leaping gnome Mark Grebner, who needs no further introduction: “Who have been your favorite politicians to cover, or talk with, going back to your first days as a reporter and continuing until we all turned into gray mush?” First of all, gray mush-wise, sp...
It's been therapeutic, eh?

Can Charles Lewis Jr. be salvaged?
That’s the excruciating question Judge George Economy faces as he decides what to do with Lewis, the 15-year-old Lansing kid convicted of murder in the 2010 slaying of Shayla Johnson. In one scenario, Lewis would go to high-security juvenile facility,... Continue reading

Now's your chance to get even with me
On Wednesday I’ll be doing what’s known on this new frontier of journalism as a “live chat,” meaning that I’ll be live and chatting (via my keyboard, that is). With readers. Is there something you wish to ask me? Tell... Continue reading

And they’re not even smoking cigarettes …
There are some things about this job I’m really going to miss. Consider, for example, the call I got Friday from 73-year-old Jan Harmon-Thompson of East Lansing. She had an assignment for me: Find how why, at the end of... Continue reading

It's a good thing I'm not superstitious ...
I now have an official departure date - Friday, April 13. My grand finale, ink on paper-wise, will run on April 15. However, I'll continue to blog on my own. Got to have a place for those grandpa stories, afer all. Go to www.johnschneiderblog.com. And you can reach me after April 13 at johnschne...

On second thought …
Angela Bryan, the Potterville woman who was summoned to Eaton County District Court on an 8-year-old dog-license ticket has reconsidered her decision to skip the hearing and pay the $91 fine. As I wrote in Thursday’s column, Bryan questioned the... Continue reading

Back on track? Hitting .197? Sorry, but I hope he goes away.
Tigers baseball! Comerica Park! Thursday!
I don’t recalI being this excited about the Tigers last year on the eve of opening day, but maybe it’s just faulty memory. Naturally I’m worried - about the defense, about the lack of speed, about Brandon Inge poisoning the well, about the fact that some experts are trying to curse the Tigers ...
On schedule …
Speaking of the Tigers, remember when those handy little pocket schedules were just about everywhere? There was a time, in fact, when somebody from the Tigers delivered a wad of them to the State Journal news room every spring. An... Continue reading

I'm pretty sure they'll win their division. But, as you say, after that, who knows?

Stick to chocolate and marshmallow
I’m with the Humane Society on this one – live bunnies and chicks make lousy Easter gifts. The cuteness quickly wears off, and suddenly you’re holding a bundle of responsibility. The Humane Society reports: “After cats and dogs, rabbits are... Continue reading

I know - I'm weak ...
Oh, Canada; we envy your wisdom
Our sensible neighbors to the north are banishing the penny from their currency line-up. The U.S. should do the same thing. As in Canada, the cost of making a U.S. penny - 1.26 cents - is higher than its face value. Does the U.S. economy need another pointless drain? A penny has no buying powers...
Well, there are the sweater-vested interests; Rick Santorum, for example ...But, seriously, it figures that the zinc and copper folks would add their two cents to the debate.

Sorry, Bob; you're asking the impossible
Yes, I have, in my time, helped get laws passed, altered the course of corporation-think, and have even gotten telephone companies to admit to, and correct, mistakes. But getting a robust, dependable local radio station to broadcast Detroit Tigers games... Continue reading

Yeah - it's too bad because, at least in the early days, BoarsHead did some edgy, original stuff. I like Les Miserables and Phantom as much as most people, but not every year.
A tragic tale, in numerous acts
It was a dramatic scene, indeed. Returning downtown after a week away, I slouched, bleary-eyed, along Grand Avenue Monday morning, to behold the once-proud BoarsHead Theatre reduced to rubble. I know - the BoarsHead folks weren’t putting enough butts in the seats; they weren’t paying their bil...

Thanks, Sam; Robin red-breast; John red-faced. I fixed it.
Deluded … delusional …demented, perhaps; but not disillusioned
Reader Ron Marshall recently sent me a video of a robin attacking the windows of his East Lansing home. Marshall wrote: “I've affectionately named the robin 'Don Quixote' who attacked windmills with the same disillusioned abandon.” As I’ve written in the past, in relation to my own battered, rob...

Thanks, Ron. I have no intention of quitting writing; I just want more flexibility. I'm weighing various options and, for starters, will launch my own blog - at wwww.johnschneiderblog.com - on April 1.
Raise your hand if you mowed your lawn over the weekend
In March ...? In Michigan ...? As Jackie Chiles, the “Seinfeld” lawyer, might say: "Outrageous, egregious, preposterous.” I’ll admit it, I was tempted. I came home from a week in the Florida Keys, and Everglades, to find a lush lawn that could have used a little trim. I even had freshly sharpe...
