I already have that weekend pencilled into my 2015 diary. Petra Lang & Herlitzius on successive nights should stir up Zurich.

And the newer one also Gheorghiu and braying donkey; nothing succeeds like excess.

Well not so little given subsequent post. I visit the Semperoper for the staatskapelle , above all for its unique sound and history, and you cannot take the Chief Conductor out of that equation. *********** Intermezzo replies - Remember there are two sides to this story - I wouldn't rush to assume everything Dorny says should be taken at face value.

I wonder how Thielemann fits in with all this. ********* Intermezzo replies - Thielemann is the chief conductor of the Staatskapelle. He is not manager/music director of either the orchestra or the opera house, so the answer to your question is probably "very little".

La Monnaie offers Ricolah cough lozenges in the foyer and flashes the message "respect the performers and do not cough" on the surtitle screen before the performance. In general people seem to have forgotten the use of a pocket handkerchief, especially in theatres and public transport.

no Richard Strauss and just one Wagner revival of the hoary old Meistersinger production with an uninspiring cast. Did no one tell them the Verdi centenary was over? Yawnsville.
I wonder who is bank rolling The Canterville Ghost?

My recollection of that production is quite different from SJT's. A very fine cast: Leiferkus, Tomowa-Sintow, Zaremba, Steblianko and Ghuiselev. In the event the Royal Ballet withdrew from the production as they were not given star billing for what is after all a 20 minute contribution to an epic scale work. Like many Russian operas the work is a series of tableaux, rather a linear narrative. Admittedly the work has many editorial problems.

The prices are still well below the standard ENO level, and I know which I consider the better deal.

There are enough LPO concerts of interest to me , to qualify for a quantity discount but reading their site , this can only be calculated by telephone booking. So hours of frusrtation on the 'phone then.
Donizetti Les Martyrs at QEH on 4/11. Rachmaninov's Miserly Knight on 21/1/15 with wagner bits, and Verdi Rquiem with Easr European cast on 25/1 both under Jurowski. Some highlights from Rosenkavalier but I have failed to track down the date again.
That was the first time I saw the grand Visconti production of Don Carlos, and the occasion of Shirley Verrett's sensational debut as Eboli. The event that (almost) converted me to being a Verdi lover.

die Feen was an absolute delight and far from being a marginal piece as it is often held to be. Leipzig is very welcoming small historic city with its strong Bach and Mendelssohn connections .Even the Stasi museum with its prosthetic rubber noses as fiendish surveillance disguises is worth a visit. I shall certainly be returning.

A bed, vaguely period costumes? Something wrong here. Where are the naked light bulbs, grey suits all in a white box?
Will they be discounting the cinema tickets to aid the real ENO experience?

The terrific young voice was cracking when he sang Zurga at the Coli. I wish him luck as Rigoletto.

Hardly an earth shattering perception for someone who has delivered the Reith Lectures. Let's hear how our local Italian boy, Antonio Pappano, gets on conducting Parsifal tomorrow night
Will Brünnhilde manage to arrive on stage for the start of the Immolation this time around?

Don't think I've ever heard the formal intricacy of Wozzeck better elucidated than by Mark Elder and the orchestra. It may have lacked the solar plexus punch for the last two interludes but better than rough approximation. Nor have I ever heard all the roles better and more accurately "sprechgesungen" (if there is such a word). Mattila simply the best Marie in this house since Marie Collier. Please, please mount a production of Makropoulos for her, ideal for her outsize personality and current vocal state. Easily paid for by ditching those "grand opera " and bel canto resuscitations.

Despite the web site stating public booking opens on the 12th November, I have just been able to book a Secret Seat for Cellini, the only offering I'm interested in seeing. ********* Intermezzo replies - Lucky you, you've avoided the rush.

I understand that Spyres is due to sing in a much overdue new production of Idomeneo at the ROH, presumably in the title role and not as a tenor Idamante. He was a remarkable Mansaniello at the Opera Comique. ******** Intermezzo replies - The title role is (or was) mentioned on his own website. While I don't doubt he can make a good job of it, I can think of several roles which are far harder to cast and which I'd far rather hear him in. But that's ROH casting for you.

The Pearl Fishers was only memorable for Alfie Boe scaling a 2 meter high wire fence in a sarong;it is surprising he has not since returned as a male alto.

and Dorabella is listed as Christine Rice Antigone. Is this going to be some improbable mash up with the Thebans? Seriously do they really think they are going to sell 12 performances in that barn with an OK but hardly exceptional cast.

Missed the party as I was watching Rachele Gilmour going spectacularly mad as Lucia in Lille (there's apostasy for you)as booking opened ,and thought it impolite to log on to Bayreuth during the flute cadenzas. By the time got home all that was left were tickets for the sewage works Tannhauser, which I didn't think worth paying €300 for. At the time of last looking tickets were available for the Netherland's Ring with the Bayreuth Brünnhilde, and the Geneva one with Petra Lang, which I shall be attending at a fraction of Bayreuth's prices.
