This Boelter family pronounces it like "belter". Although "bo-EL-ter" is nice, in a "banana-fana" kind of way...

via grognardia.blogspot.com Old-school D&D artist Jim Roslof died this past Saturday. While I never considered him one of my favorite artists, there's no denying the indelible impression he left on my mind as a young nerd (I'm thinking mostly of the cover painting for B2: Keep on the Borderland). I like the piece featured above because it showcases what I like best about his work: fluid lines, trippy shapes, and retro-fantasy style. This one gets bonus points for being especially polished (some of his stuff is not) and Art Nouveau-esque. I'm really enjoying the celebration of his work on the... Continue reading

via roblfc1892.deviantart.com Borgnine, my Dwarf character in Jonathan Becker's Thursday-night B/X Dungeons & Dragons game, died last night after four gaming sessions by drowning in the bowels of White Plume Mountain, while attempting to recover the magical artifact Whelm, a trident giving the bearer certain powers of Poseidon. Oh, and... Continue reading

i thought the dialog they wrote for rodriguez's character was one of the worst parts about the movie. so bad. i had a lot of the same reactions after i saw it, but for some reason, the movie stuck in my head for days afterwards. i don't know if it was the intense sensory experience, or if they actually hypnotized me, but i couldn't stop thinking about it. it seems to have worn off, though.

I think we are probably supposed to read it in the Naive way, but I agree that it's frustrating: it kinda just throws away everything in the sideways timeline. If it is purgatory, and it's all after the characters die, then it has almost no bearing on the "real" timeline story (except maybe for Desmond's possible premonition of it), and thus is kind of a waste of our time. In that case, I think either A) the writers didn't know it was going to be purgatory when this season started, or B) it was ill-conceived and/or poorly realized. Because yeah, why would it be so complicated? Why would Jack and Juliette have a son in purgatory? Why would sequential events happen at all, if there is no "now"? (Also, I find it hard to believe that in Sayid's afterlife, Shannon would trump Nadia.) Having said that, I enjoyed the mushy, surprised reunions (weird absences notwithstanding) and I thought the island-timeline story ending was cool (but it was so heavily foreshadowed that Hurley would take over after Jack died that I was hoping it was a fakeout). I will also say that without his major role as the awakener in the sideways-timeline, it would have been pretty lame for Desmond to end the series unconscious.

You've certainly read Jason Toon's work: he's head writer for Woot.com. But you might not have thought about the staggering amount of copy he has to write. And the first time he did a Woot-Off, neither did he. via gizmodo.com Nice to see an old buddy get a little (more) respect. Continue reading

The coelacanth is one ugly prehistoric fish. The cool thing about it is that it's post-historic, too! (Or at least, um, regular historic...) From what I can tell, all of the collectors pictured below have three things in common: they like fish, they feel some connection to the concept of "survival", and they are nerdy enough to get a big tattoo of a living fossil.
