The below is a quick (< 5 mins) analysis of Twitter conversation using hashtag #HRTechConf from September 28, 2010 through today. For those of you that didn't have the chance to attend, I'd highly recommend it next year - it truly was a worthwhile experience and I can legitimately say... Continue reading

It's a Saturday morning after a super trip to the HR Technology Conference (#HRTechConf) in Chicago this week. As you can imagine, it was a whirlwind of a week - a constant state of learning wrapped in a package of meeting new people, strengthening weak links, spending more quality time... Continue reading

Good afternoon, Everyone! I am currently in the proposal stage for a government contract that will require me to hire someone who is DoD 8510-M compliant Systems Administrator for assistance accessing and downloading email data to be analyzed by me and my staff/partners. This is only a part-time opportunity, but the pay will be highly competitive and worth your while. Moonlighting is fine, so feel free to drop me a line at: jl(at)knightbishop.com This is what the Contracting Officer sent over in terms of further details, so I look forward to having a conversation with you! :) "Person must be... Many are quite surprised at the level of importance Social Network Analysis (SNA) plays in our global "War on Terror" efforts. In fact, it's widely unknown that SNA led to the capture of Saddam Hussein (we'll get to that tomorrow.) In the meanwhile, the below is my best effort to... Continue reading

I'm often asked why I'm so passionate about SNA (Social Network Analysis) - why I'm continually amazed, why I find myself thinking about it and looking at life, organizations, and societies in new ways each day, why it is one of the few emerging disciplines in which there is more... In his article, "What are the Arts of Innovation?" (mentioned yesterday) and ensuing comment stream, Andrew Buck brings up a good point that SNA (Social Network Analysis) may not be a critical skill for the individual practitioner. When you're tasked with purely innovating (i.e. delivering new product ideas, etc., into... Continue reading

In his article, "What are the Arts of Innovation?" (mentioned yesterday) and ensuing comment stream, Andrew Buck brings up a good point that SNA (Social Network Analysis) may not be a critical skill for the individual practitioner. When you're tasked with purely innovating (i.e. delivering new product ideas, etc., into the NPD funnel), you're not necessarily in a leadership role. However, if you were, in fact, a Leader tasked with forming a cross-functional innovation team (and/or asked to come in as a consultant and build one cold-turkey), you'd be well-served to take a look at the SNA first. Here's how... Continue reading

In his post, "What are the Arts of Innovation?", blogger Andrew Dick of Ensparq does an outstanding job of creating a mash-up of concepts generally related to innovation from a "Strategist's" viewpoint. For today's post, I'm going to focus on his reference to SNA (Social Network Analysis) in the following... Continue reading

The recent departure of Hewlett-Packard Co. CEO Mark Hurd highlights the absolute importance of having a strong succession plan in place. Considering that most CEO searches take anywhere between 4 and 8 months to complete, it is imperative to be prepared. In my opinion, this should be a continuously ongoing effort for every Board - if the focus is on the Shareholder and creation of value, succession planning may in fact be the most important objective of the board to be on top of at all times. Here's the issue, however: Most Boards don't do it right. They focus intensely... Continue reading

Along with everyone involved with #HireFriday, I want to see you get hired. Shooting straight, I've been in your shoes - I know how it feels to get sucked into the black hole roller-coaster of job hunting. When people ask me why I got into Recruiting, I honestly tell them it's because I was once a Candidate that believed there had to be a better way. Little to no contact from Recruiters sucked. Setting my expectations and then missing timeline after timeline sucked. Getting past an initial phone-screen and then waiting 2 months to speak with the Hiring Manager sucked.... Continue reading

#HireFriday went live again today at noon EST. Personally, I'd say it was a huge success - we had fun, injected some comedy to offset the seriousness, and above all, learned of people getting hired. All great stuff if you ask me! So I wonder what the online conversation around #HireFriday looked like? I mean, what does social interaction on Twitter really look like? If you're interested in the same, you've come to the right place :) The above visual shows the entire conversation visually. Pretty cool, right? Twitter handle images are sized by strength of network position (as it... Continue reading

[Note: Originally posted here at FistfulofTalent.com.] Social Recruiting. Oh, no, not another Social Recruiting post, right?! Not so fast. As I begin today's post, I'd like to make you 2 promises in true FOT style: This isn't a post about your Grandparent's version of Social Recruiting. This will be unlike anything that's been written as it pertains to Social Recruiting to date. Let's start with a foundational premise: Social Recruiting 3.0 will be all about conversation and leveraging social interaction. Before I begin, let me suggest that if you believe #SocialRecruiting is about finding Candidates through searching Twitter Bios', Facebook... Continue reading

I don't have too much time to dive into the following tonight (and this is a preview of a more in-depth post to come Thursday at FistfulofTalent.com), however I wanted to offer a quick tidbit that I found pretty interesting. Today, I decided to do a quick analysis of anyone who has tweeted out the following terms over the last 5 days: Social Recruiting. (That's not "Social Recruiting" as I wasn't searching for the string; I was only searching for any Tweets that had those two words within them.) I then took the data, performed a very quick analysis, and... Continue reading

In terms of global sports, no event captures the captivating mix of raw passion and nationalistic pride quite like the World Cup. National anthems, each country's colors on their team's jerseys, the thrill of the penalty-kick shootout, flying headers into the back of the net, the screaming of "Gooooooaaaaaallllllllll" (in any language), it all adds up to a game that galvanizes the world every four years. Amidst all the excitement, Soccer (or Football, if you're so inclined) is arguably one of the simplest sports to understand and learn how to play. The objective is simple and straightforward - put the... Continue reading

The below is an outstanding visual representation of Dunbar's Social Brain Hypothesis. Worth particular note is the following excerpt, because it speaks to 'social groups' or 'social circles', meaning the 2 to 5 individuals that we have our closest ties to (i.e. our spouse, nuclear family members, lifelong friends, etc.): "In primate species, total group sizes may be quite large", he explains, "but individual primates usually belong to a smaller social sub-group, on which they rely for support when conflicts break out. The number of regular grooming partners they have may be much smaller, though. For instance, chimps belong to... Continue reading

Jurgen, good post . . . however, I believe that you may not understand Dr. Karen Stephenson's theory on Network Archetypes. This is what I mean: Malcom Gladwell (in "The Tipping Point") spoke to network archetypes as they relate to creating *mass-change*. He wasn't listing all Human Beings into one of 3 categories alone. Likewise, Dr. Karen Stephenson is not doing that, either. It's important to keep in mind that she is speaking to common network archetypes that arise in every Human Network when evaluated through a SNA (Social Network Analysis). . . just as you understand that humanity is a series of Small-World Networks (Watts-Strogatz). Through the math, we identify the crucial individuals in a Human Network (or series of Human Networks) through their network position. This is NOT subjective, while Malcom Gladwell's characterizations are. When we evaluate all Human Networks through SNA, we identify these critical Network Archetypes mathematically (different individuals have varying algorithms, however they're largely the product of Linton Freeman). In doing so, it's worth noting that SNA is not the be-all, end-all . . . however illumination of Informal Networks is important because without being aware of them (and those individuals within them that hold critical roles), we are largely operating "in the blind" (i.e. relying in intuition, which is largely limited by our Network Horizon, or our 2nd degree). In closing, it's worth noting that SNA shows these Network Archetypes - they are not an attempt to put all Human Beings into one of three buckets.
