Mrs. Dooley is a smart, thoughtful and caring person and member of the community. As I commented at the council meeting, I agreed with much of what she said. However, I also believe that there are several very serious matters which the council has failed to address with regard to the city manager, thereby creating a crisis of confidence. This can be fixed, but the council must act very quickly in full public view and with complete openness and trasparency. Joe Sack
D, Unfortunately, I no longer believe that your comments are even mildly entertaining. Your comments about a deceased friend and colleague were inappropriate. But that doesn't change the fact that you are still avoiding the questions I previously asked you, based on your prior comments. Namely: 1. Dapolite made specific, credible allegations -- why shouldn't they be investigated? 2. Regarding Hen island, it is clear that you have some personal animosity towards Tartaglione -- but what is it that you allege that I have done that is improper? 3. Regarding Rye Golf Club, you seem the represent that you have personal knowledge of what happened -- if so, the council has an ongoing investigation, can you please let us know? This can be an unkind forum, especially for those willing to stand up and use their real names. And I understand that there can be some bathroom wall type of stuff that goes on here, so I know what I'm getting into. But even if you're afraid to give your real name, you'll need to give real answers to these questions, and not just innuendo and hateful barbs, in order to have any semblence of relevancy and credibility, even on this site. RV, Ok, just hit send and seem to have been lost in cyberspace, so let me try again. First, thanks for volunteering that you are just a well-meaning fair-minded constituent who only wants to speak with his/her councilman. I speak with those type of folks all the time on the phone, over coffee, at soccer games, you name it. I'd be happy to do the same with you, you should have said so earlier. Unfortunately, many of the people who post on this site have a pre-determined point of view that can't be changed, and are looking to advance an agenda, for good or for bad. Glad to hear that's not you. However, by your questions and clarifying responses, you seem to have some biases or misconceptions of your own, that's ok everyone is entitled, and there is nothing wrong with honest disagreement. I don't want to put you on the spot now, because you've indicated that you are uncomfortable with this forum. For now, at this time, however, I am unable to answer 3 out of 5 of your inquiries, because there is not enough info, that's what I called for investigations as a matter of public record. That was actually the topic of my original column that you made your post in connection with, so I assumed you read it. On your remaining inquiries -- also as a matter of public record, I asked the city administration to have the county come to a city council meeting and explain their position. Communication is the key to understanding, as they say. Unfortunately that hasn't happened. Maybe you would have better luck than me in asking. As far as abusing city staff, I'm totally against that. I am in favor of open and transparent government however, and it sounds like you are too. Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you and chatting, sounds like you have a real interest in this stuff. RV, Why is the Dapolite matter a tangled web? On what do you rely for everything is ok on hen island? What is your understanding of the chronology of when certain tax matters and building violations were known, to whom, and what was done about them? What matters are not covered by free speech and what elected officials have been abused? Also, do you happen to know what happened to D, petulant child and rye wit? Finally, why won't you use your real name? Joe Sack

D, Your comments can be mildly entertaining, but please focus. No cheap innuendo and blather this time. 1. Dapolite made specific, credible allegations -- why shouldn't they be investigated? 2. D, I mean really, the banter on this site can be a goof sometimes. And I can enjoy it as a distraction from reality. But let's talk reality for one second. I go on the record all the time, on this site, at public meetings, on live TV. Heck, I've even engaged you here. Do you have anything other than cheap innuendo? Seriously, if you can't confess to who you really are, I'd at least expect to hear what you really got. Joe Sack

D/petulantchild/ryewit, Remember that pea brain redneck character from "My Cousin Vinny", the one who kept on wanting to fight Joe Pesci for 200 bucks? And Pesci said sure, just show me the money first? Sure, you can debate me, just show up at the next city council meeting with your real identity. Until then, I can't do much more for you. Joe Sack

D, What happened to your calls for an investigation? You sure did lose your playfulness when you got tired. You had to go and break out the "do you still beat your wife" question. Don't worry, I'll still play along for you. The answer is that I have no idea why, and it's something out of my control. Ray has said its because I am willing to be independent. That is true, so I'll accept that compliment as far as it goes. But he certainly didn't do me any favors by leaving me off the car. I actually thought the floatiemobile was in poor taste and was an unnecessary embarrassment of my colleagues, and I called for it to be removed. And I believe that it's because of pressure like that that Ray took the pictures down. But you know I've taken that strong position publicly before. Of course the purpose of your inquiry isn't meant to derive an actual answer, but rather to try to insinuate some sort of connection between your nemesis and myself. There is none. But thanks for trying to slime me just the same. This is not the first time it's happened, and I've survived worse ambushes than this on live TV, as you surely also know. Your other question directed to me -- I am unaware of any direct connection between the troubles at Rye Golf and what happened to Dapolite, other than that both situations deal with issues involving possible untruthfulness and deceit. But if you are asking maybe you know something I don't. Keep smilin D, and don't ever change. Joe Sack

Petulant child, Yes, yes, I know, it's all a faux cause celebre, or some other fancy word, and the city is crumbling and the sky is falling, and who has time to worry about truth and honesty when we've got cracked sidewalks and all. And the stuff about the Mr. Floatiemobile, that spitball has been used before, but it made me feel a whole lot better when I learned that it was someone else who received support and backing from Ray. Not me. I'm my own person. Unfortunately, you can't say the same. Joe Sack

Petulant Child, You sound like someone I know. Here's your solution -- swear everyone in under oath, have them tell their stories under penalties of perjury. We'll make sure you get your chance. Here's a good question that will be asked -- have you ever blogged under an anonymous name? Joe Sack

Peter J., Thank you for joining the conversation. However, your attack on me from left field is misguided, and unfortunately appears meant to distract from the relevant issue. First, I am under no obligation to use any particular e-mail address, which you surely know. Further, any of my e-mails from any e-mail address which pertain to city business, you are free to see. Ironically, the reason you cite for wanting to maintain all e-mails on one e-mail address (i.e., to make it easier to produce the e-mails upon request) has not resulted in my receiving ANY of the e-mails I've requested between the city manager and the mayor, whom you are attempting to defend. If you would care to address any of the points I made in my original column, I would be interested to listen. http://www.myrye.com/my_weblog/2012/12/sack-wants-pickupfrench-email-trail-on-rye-golf-club-public-guest-column.html Your colleague, Joe Sack
Mr. Steve, Thanks for your input and interest. As I'm sure you can appreciate, with rising expenses and decreasing revenue, maintaining or expanding certain services, even good services, has become nearly impossible to sustain without making hard choices and raising taxes dramatically in an already highly taxed area. Feel free to call me anytime (914) 701-0806.
Stevie Wonder, Thanks for the shout out. Sorry if I didn't pander enough for your liking. Of course the route is important for those who use it. I'm more than happy to take unsolicited hits from folks like you on things I control. I wasn't the one who cut this service.
Another thing -- It has been correctly pointed out to me what a great resource the skate park is, and the attention to the recent long boarding phenomenon in no way diminishes the skate park, or detracts from the great work of all who labored to establish the park. Let's figure out a way that not only promotes the skate park but also reinforces lessons on safety for all types of boarders.

OK, so myrye must be a little hurting for content if it is picking thru the miscellaneous section of the city council minutes for material. Kidding aside, I'm glad the issue has gotten a bigger response here than it actually did at the council meeting. I do believe the issue is not whether, but how, and clearly safety and education are the key. Maybe there is a way to convey that in the schools with the help of the PD, but parents need to play a role for sure. I know that some parents actually drop off their kids on choice streets. More than a few observed and reported near misses and less than perfect behavior mean many kids need a little primer on being careful and respecting neighbors. Too bad the skate park has already become obsolete. Anyway, I think a community meeting on this topic would help, and I'll try to put one together. Please let me know if you'd like to truly help here. Joe Sack P.S. To me.yahoo -- chill out a little, and if you want to stay anonymous you shouldn't tip your hand so much.

Betty -- You are too cool for school, pal! Ok, I'll roll in the mud with you -- but just this one time. And don't sell yourself short in making this a freakshow sometimes, you've got real skills. Finally, let me know when you're up for a game of poker, your "tell" is worse than Tim's. Come on, Charmian you can figure it out. Dont worry, I still think you're a good guy. Yours truly, Sack Daddy
Focus, It's a question of money. We need to wait for money from other levels of government because we don't have the money to do it ourselves. But pending arrival of the money, the decision was already made to replace the bridge, and I see no reason to go back on that decision now. Joe Sack

Jim, While I sometimes write guest columns for MyRye, as you know I am not a "poster". But you raise a fair point that my request for feedback has resulted in questions that seek responses. I may not have all the answers, but here is what I know and my own opinion for what it's worth. I am sorry if you have posed these questions directly to other council members or city staff and have not heard back. Re: snow -- I too have inquired about sidewalk snow removal and have been assured that the city is working its hardest to remove snow for which it is responsible, and writing tickets for resident non-compliance. However it seems that there are spots that have gone uncleared. As I have said in other situations (e.g., coyote tracking) public safety is a results-oriented endeavor and trying hard is not always good enough. Please send me off-line a list of the spots you identified. It could be that what we need to do in serious situations is -- instead of just writing tickets -- have the city clear a private spot and then send the bill to the owner. Re: Participation by department heads at public budget meetings --The city manager runs the city, and this is his prerogative. But I am a believer in the most transparency and information as possible, and I am confident that the next time around all necessary personnel will be present. Re: Central Ave. Bridge, sluice gate, Theo. Fremd -- I am told that these projects are stalled because we are waiting for grant money, and that we will not get the funds re-imbursed if we lay out our own money first. We just can't afford to do this. Re: CVS -- There are no grant monies waiting for us on this, and if the city didn't pay off the $5 million delayed ballon purchase payment in 2010, the city would have been subject to other monetary costs and penalties. That said, CVS is still a big albatross that was hung on our necks back in 2006, but is just now starting to drag us down, and we need to have a full accounting for where the funds to pay off the purchase price came from and how it affects our balance sheet and budget. Re: Bird house -- I do not relish being right from the beginning on this bad deal. A year and a half later, we still haven't received a penny. Even if we ultimately re-coup some of the money, the damage has already been done to our cash flow problem. Even city staff has so little faith we will get all the money back that they haven't even issued the Revenue Anticipation Notes they requested and received approval for last year. We also still haven't figured out the full impact this will have on our already strained balance sheet and budget. Re: Schubert pond -- Proving that no good deed goes unpunished, although I was the only council member willing to constructively address the situation, I have now been sued personally along with other city officials. This obviously constrains my ability to respond at this time. But I was very vocal and opinionated in the face of extreme adversity before the litigation was commenced, and I would generally remind you of and refer you to these publically available comments.
