I want to marry this comment. ...And then avoid filling out forms about it as long as we both shall live. Thanks, Luis.

So I was sitting at the dining room table, feverishly always-sometimes-rarely-nevering, when Paul asked me if I wanted something to drink. "Please," I said distractedly, gesturing over into the kitchen. "I already have one started." I meant the half-finished cup... Continue reading

I got this lovely message on Facebook the other day asking me what my plans were for my blog. I laughed merrily, because that is what I do when I find something gently hilarious — oh ho ho, goodness me,... Continue reading

As I kissed Charlie good night on this, his Thanksgiving birthday, he said, "I think I smell creamed corn on your breath." Mortified, I apologized. "That's okay," he told me kindly. "I really like creamed corn." I really like my... Continue reading

I'm feeling reflective today. Maybe it's because this morning I had a moment of perfect happiness with Ben, watching his face uncrumple from sleep as he rubbed his eyes with his fists — such a thoroughly little-kid move that I... Continue reading

I have five minutes before I leave for the dentist, where I will be scrupulously honest about exactly how often I floss, so this is going to be what the young 'uns call a microblog. I just wanted to record... Continue reading

You know, Ben's morbid bent doesn't surprise me anymore. Over spring break we rented an apartment in Boston, the better to let Charlie mingle with his people. As Ben and I explored the neighborhood together, he noticed a cemetery."It's convenient... Continue reading

Rough morning. Charlie's rocking and rolling, objecting to everything, construing even the mildest guiding word as a slur against his honouuuur. After sixty or seventy gentle remonstrances, quiet redirections, and calm changes of subject, I'm starting to lose my cool.... Continue reading

The last swim of the summer took place in our neighbor's pool. After the standard boyish frolic (gleeful pantsing) and the requisite motherly threats (baleful warning), Charlie and his friend H. grudgingly hauled themselves out, toweled off, and prepared to... Continue reading

If I'd been blogging it all along, cataloguing it day by discouraging day, I wonder if it would seem inevitable. I'm a little bit afraid, instead, that this comes out of the blue: Charlie's changing schools. After three years at... Continue reading

Laptop is partially because of dysgraphia. We've enthusiastically embraced letting him use a keyboard to get his thoughts out sometimes -- the frustration of not being able to write well (which is to say at all) becomes a huge obstacle to his actually doing the work. Happy to let him use whatever tools we can scramble up to help him adapt and achieve. The other part, though, is that the teacher told the kids they could "be creative" in how they presented their material. I'm sure she had in mind dressing up as the historical figure, or, I don't know, a poster or a diorama or some shit, but Charlie cut right to the chase: "Can I do it on a computer?" Well, sure, especially if it means I don't have to help you refashion Marie Curie's lab in miniature out of cat-hair-covered Wiki Stix.

Speaking of trying hard, Charlie and his class were charged with the task of doing a report on notable women for women's history month. Charlie's choice surprised no one, though his title did strike me as maybe a little too... Continue reading
