I went to see the Uffington White Horse just outside Uffington, Oxfordshire because it’s old, it’s not well explained and because local legend holds that it’s actually not a horse, but a dragon: And not just any dragon. They say the hill carving commemorates the dragon killed by Saint George himself and they’ve got the chalk scar on nearby Dragon Hill to prove it. It’s just a 45 minute drive from the university town of Oxford and makes a great day trip if you find yourself in that area with some time on your hands. The Uffington White Horse is worth a visit simply for its sense of mystery and age. Why would flightless Bronze Age Britons create art that can only really be seen well from the air? (Yes, just like the Nazca lines in Peru.) The creature is ancient. Tests in 1994 set the date of its creation as between 1400 and 600 B.C. To give this some perspective, Stonehenge predates it by at least 1,500 years. The first Celts reached Britain in and around 500 B.C. (and so cannot be its creators). Julius Caesar and his Roman soldiers didn’t arrive in Britain until 55 A.D. The figure stretches 374 feet (although some sources have it at 360-365 feet) across a grassy hillside near the top of White Horse Hill. From this windy pasture (the grass is kept reasonably short by obliging sheep) it overlooks the Vale of the White Horse. The ancient artists created the creature’s form by digging deep, curving trenches and then filling them with crushed white chalk. The result looks more like modern art than a living animal, but the figure catches the imagination and prances with life across the hillside all the same. Continue reading

Obviously this is not a chalk figure anywhere. It's a house in Milton Keynes, with a traditional thatched roof.
I thought the text would should up, not just the headline. I don't know about this, guys.
So, I'm curious. When did Darwin take over South America? I didn't know it was his. Cheers!

I love the colors you used here. I love the energy you've managed to illustrate. Showing the movement in a picture; that's always my biggest challenge.

When the ancient tropical sea that once covered this area receded, it left a landscape of swamps and lagoons where dinosaurs roamed. Today, their footprints can be seen embedded in stone formations in an area known as the Isle of Purbeck; a fossil forest has been uncovered near tranquil Lulworth Cove; and the frighteningly large (8 feet long) fossilized skull of a sea serpent — thought to be the world's largest — was discovered off the coast of Charmouth last year. In other words, the kids will love this place. via www.kentucky.com Continue reading

Success at last! The tech guys said it was a software glitch for the V4 iphone that turned my pictures sideways or upside down. Only the small size has managed to arrive upright. But now I don't trust it at all. Don't want my blog to look silly, after all. We'll do some more testing. Continue reading

Well, the pictures from the Iphone are still coming through sidewise. The tech guys said it was glitch with the V4 iphone but I have the VGS 3 and went with the smaller option and the picture is still arriving sideways. Most frustrating. We'll have to try again. The tree is from Milton Keynes, by the way. Continue reading
