Matt, every year I look forward to re-reading this. I remember my dad reading it to us at dinner, the day it was published. Mike Royko left us too soon.

Thank you for that moving recollection! While the wounds of Vietnam seem to be healing, it behooves us all to reach out to those who served there and in Korea. Not so long ago, it was brought to our attention that the WWII vets were leaving at an alarming rate. My dad would be 93 this December, we lost him in 2007. The same sort or rate is now happening with the Korean vets and those that served in Vietnam are also nearing that point. Good bless you all!

Nybo won the race, but it's so important that those like Matt, with the resources and qualifications get out and challenge the establishment. It's the only way that sensible voices will be heard. I admire you Matt, for both your service, your voice for others, and the guts to challenge the one party rule in Illinois.

I'm a teacher in Catholic middle school. The students are very motivated to help. They've already raised over $600. in the past 3 days. Their mission will continue through 2/6, the end of Catholic Schools Week in our diocese. However on 2/14 they will serve and sponsor a pancake breakfast, usually held to raise funds for computer software for the school. It's never raised less than $600. and the signs are that it will easily raise much more than double that. My kids are calling in extended family, neighbors, even enemies. ;)

Yet here we sit on 7/9/09. No big tea party in Chicago area. No real protest against our 'favorite son.' Eric, I'd had hope for you. I still hope you pull it together. But don't ask me for over $25.99 when you couldn't pull together something we were all clamoring for.

I do thank God everyday for these men, and those like them, that we never hear about. The heroics are unfathomable and just humble me.

Scott, just to thank him properly, it's John Kass, not Robert. ;)

Matt, this is not a great year to be Chicago sports fans. Sigh. While I'm proud the Illini came so far, they just folded at the end.

Uncle Jimbo, I agree with your proposition up to a point; the solution must be enforcement, not physical. We already have the laws, federal and local to deal with the problem. The people of each locality must pressure the enforcement of those laws. Most of the workers from Mexico, as Caleb noted above and you also implied, come here to work to better their lives. They have no intention of becoming Americans, they go back and forth as circumstances warrant. If the governments, state or federal, enforce the laws and punish the employers, the workers will go home and stay. No need to deport people who just came to better their lot, nor reward them for lowering the rate of pay and employment opportunities for our own lower socioeconomic group workers.

Happy New Year, Matt, Mrs.B5, and all the B5 readers and writers. I was so heartened to read the update this morning regarding the Sgt. Somehow I don't think Grodner is going to have such a great start on this new year. Couldn't happen to a more deserving *****

Well if they are 'hard core leftist' they are at least willing to use their talents to help 'support the troops.' I say it's far better thing than making Rendition or protesting on the street, "We support the troops, Bring them Home!" I'm glad they made the album and hope the service people enjoy it.
