I love any spot I can hear running water - that place looks wonderful to me.

Love your list of what you won't let go. I too have been watching the CCSS with some trepidation. I can see good things about them but what they have left out leaves me with big gaping holes. We'll see how this unfolds.

What a great night! Chris and I get out sometimes but we actually went on a vacation last summer, just the two of us. I asked him before we left - would we even remember what it is like to be just us? It was great and made me realize that while it will be hard when the kids grow up, there will be good points as well. Glad you got to enjoy your date night!

These lines actually made me laugh out loud, "We made it. Three of my class fell asleep during the movie and I feel like I may have lost a few pounds." My room (built in 1894) truly struggles with the heat. It is either freezing or sweltering. I understand. :)

I absolutely love this activity and will be stealing it next year. :) Go Sidekicks, go!
Interesting. I receive very similar feedback at Parent-Teacher conferences. I told my husband I wish every teacher could hear it. I truly think my extreme enthusiasm for reading is the ticket to student readers - just like you've shown in your room. If that's the case, that is easily duplicated in other rooms. (as long as the teachers are readers too.)

As I said on Twitter, I was ready to come here to let you have it - how can you avoid this book? But, I understand. I almost didn't read The Fault In Our Stars because I had heard so much from everyone else about it. But, if you worry about it, wait. The beautiful book will obviously be there whenever you are ready for it. :)

I know I didn't know about poverty like that when I was in high school, much less college. Wow! And I am also saddened to learn I will shortly be in the older half of our country. Right now I'm 38.1 (almost). Woo hoo - I need to live it up for the next month, then I mature. :)

I enjoyed this slice, it is a slice of your day after all. And if you are still stuck tomorrow, feel free to write a slice describing how the phrase, "Holy Moses!" is sweeping the nation. It's in mine for today. Catching on, I tell you! :)

Not sure if I commented on your original post but I love the battle of the books. Not able to swing it right now but I might try this idea at the end of the year. Simply awesome!
I understand - my oldest will be in my building for fourth grade next year. Doesn't seem possible! How is it time can go so fast and so slow?

Love this post - one, because you describe the feeling of meh so well - and it is one I'm familiar with. Two, because when I think of you I absolutely think of over the top and bubbly. :) Hope your day improves. Mine was going well and now I'm feeling off and ready for a nap.

Love this slice and your connection with Hank through the game. Fun!

Holy Moses - those are some great socks. :) Seriously, love the peak into your room. A day of reading sounds like a wonderful day to me!
Which Sedaris book are you reading? I had someone just recommend one of his to me - and I've never read anything he wrote so I was intrigued.

Some great books! I still need to finish We Are Not Eaten by Yaks - love it. And I still haven't read Fourth Stall - good for 5th? Katherine

I love Blue Chicken, just read it recently. Which chapter book is one of your favorites?

Love your post, Tony. I find myself wondering along the same lines. I teach in a school that has good scores, but with the students we have, we should. I am working for change from within but creating my own "fantasy faculty" is often a dream. Katherine

Tony, your blog post is something I could have written word for word. So glad I went as well and cannot wait until Vegas. Katherine
