Not that anyone is reading this blog, but I feel the need to explain my absence. I've been unpacking. And unpacking. And still more unpacking. And I'm not done yet. Things have been coming together nicely, though. I'm very happy with the rooms that are finished, even though there are... Continue reading

Today my writing prompt asked me what was most important to me, in choosing a house. Every time we move, I make a list of what we have to have at the new place, but the list is mostly about not wanting to miss things that were at the old... Continue reading

I bought turquoise chairs (part of my turquoise/gray/etc. pallet) as a relatively inexpensive way to make my Flat Rock kitchen table fit into the Florida scheme of things. I'm really happy with the result! Continue reading

When I ordered the dressers, I didn't pay for the "expert assembly" in the room of my choice. Big fail. See, I thought, "It's a dresser. You screw on the feet and insert the drawers." Well, no. If you order the dresser from Wayfair and can't believe the great price... Continue reading

Today I worked on my 15 year old son's room. He needed a dresser and a nightstand. His bed is a platform with no headboard, so I could get any colored furniture. Wouldn't you know it? I ended up liking a gray dresser? I guess that's good, as I will... Continue reading

I have spent many hours on many websites, trying to find something to hang over the bed. It (or they) had to be the right colors, and, I thought, something tranquil. But after looking at a zillion tranquil beach scenes, it finally occurred to me that I'm not a person... Continue reading

So. I sold all the Flat Rock hickory furniture. I highly recommend Flat Rock Furniture, should you ever buy a cabin in the woods. It's very pricey, but it is built to last for several generations. And it's really gorgeous. But it doesn't look good in Florida. So I sold... Continue reading

First, a little back story. I am, much to my on-going surprise, a "woman of a certain age." As most people my age will tell you, I feel like I'm about 35 or 40, but the mirror says otherwise. (However, as "women of a certain age" go, I get along... Continue reading

I love to look at websites for ideas. It's the modern version of window shopping. (And, if you have a PC instead of a Mac, it is window shopping.) My husband becomes twitchy when he sees me browsing websites. He doesn't understand that putting it on your "wish list" or... Continue reading

I'm about to decorate a house from scratch. I've done this many times. I've done it many times while living with two men (my husband and my son.) I love them, so I can tell you who is currently the points leader in both Nascar series, who is playing tonight... Continue reading

(You can pre-order them now and get a 20% discount.) Come Rain or Come Shine by Jan Karon -- September 22nd Killing Reagan by Bill O'Reilly... Continue reading

I have been too busy to blog, but I'm going to try to be better. I'm currently writing a movie and a miniseries, running the store, raising a 14 year-old and teaching screenwriting at Appalachian State University, so I have an excuse. Last June (2014) we came within 15 minutes... Continue reading

HAPPY NEW YEAR! If you haven't visited us in our current incarnation, please do. In our neverending attempt to stay in business, we moved out of our Boone Mall store in June of 2014. We didn't move far, though. We rented a much less expensive space directly in front of the old store, and we built an "open air" book store in the middle of the mall. We would have loved to have stayed in the old store, but business was not strong enough for us to pay the rent. However, we have been happily surprised by our unconventional store.... To borrow from Mark Twain, the report of our death is greatly exaggerated! Or maybe we just had a near-death experience. At any rate, we had our big going-out-of-business sale and we we down to two display tables and a few boxes of books headed to the Friends of the Library, when somehow we came up with the idea to move into the middle of the mall and run a little book store kiosk. So we pushed out display tables out into the hall... Obviously we won't have the same selection, but it will bring our rent down thousands of... Continue reading

As you have probably heard, we will be closing our doors at the end of June. We are so grateful to the loyal customers who kept us going while all the other local book stores closed. Thanks to you, we have been able to have the incredible experience of owning Black Bear Books for almost five years. We have been able to employ many delightful college students who have enriched our lives and the lives of our customers. We have been able to provide the town with a great independent book store for five years longer than they would have... Continue reading

2013 was a great year for books. Of course, if you're a book lover, every year is a great year for books. But despite all its woes, the publishing industry is still cranking out books for the people who love them, and our job is to help you find the ones that shouldn't be missed. We'll start with our youngest readers. CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOKS The Day the Crayons Quit by Oliver Jeffers.Poor Duncan just wants to color. Unfortunately, he can't, because all of his colors have quit in protest. The book is full of all the letters they have written... Continue reading

It's Labor Day weekend and we hope you all had a great summer. (Thank you for spending all those rainy days at our store!) The fall decor is coming out of the closet this week, as we get ready for what looks to be a great fall booklist. More about that in a minute. If you haven't been to the store lately, come say "hi" to our new assistant manager, Mary, and our new bookseller, Jordan. You might know her from Food Lion or Six Pence, and you might recognize him from Panera Bread. They are both excellent additions to... Continue reading

The things you never imagine yourself saying when you buy a bookstore. It's summer, when we get a whole new brand of crazy. Today, three high school kids came in, sat down at a table in the back and played Magic (the card game) for about two hours. Then, before... Continue reading
