Here's a concrete example: suppose you have millions of web pages that you want to download and save to disk for later processing. How do you do it? The cool-kids answer is to write a distributed crawler in Clojure and run it on EC2, handing out jobs with a message queue like SQS or ZeroMQ. The Taco Bell answer? xargs and wget. In the rare case that you saturate the network connection, add some split and rsync. A "distributed crawler" is really only like 10 lines of shell script. via teddziuba.com This is a little ... too fanatical in favor... Continue »

The following series of events just took place within the last half an hour (or so): @DavidHasselhoff, the verfiied Twitter account of one David Hasselfhoff, starts following me. I've heard he's been following an awful lot of game folk... Continue »

And while you can only attack gays and lesbians at the ballot box, nice and impersonally, your children have the option of attacking actual gays and lesbians, in person, in real time. Real gay and lesbian children. Not political abstractions, not “sinners.” Gay and lesbian children. Try to keep up: The dehumanizing bigotries that fall from the lips of “faithful Christians,” and the lies about us that vomit out from the pulpits of churches that “faithful Christians” drag their kids to on Sundays, give your children license to verbally abuse, humiliate, and condemn the gay children they encounter at school.... Had a bit of fun with the screenshots from Morten Just's [iPhone and Windows Phone 7 series side-by-side: The chrome, the chrome!](http://mortenjust.com/2010/02/17/iphone-and-windows-phone-7-series-side-by-side-the-chrome-the-chrome/): WinPhone is purty, no doubt. But the iPhone is all about data density and making actions visible. And yeah, I'll grant that the iOS UI is about due for a bit of refresh, but I'd bet that the... Continue »

Can we not agree after the complete commodification of social game awards that if you're not committing to building a whole experience around rewards to make them feel intrinsic to your activity they're just so much syrupy fructose glazed across your service, intended to sweeten and make your site “sticky”...
