Ruth, I have a question. I have read and loved your books and appreciate very much how you encourage people to know where their food comes from and to try and make ethical decisions about what they eat. And I really loved your June blog about the local chickens you were getting and how you tried to explain to your friend why supermarket chickens are so inexpensive. So I have to ask and I am not being a smart-ass, why you think it is ok to eat foie gras, given how it is produced and the inherent cruelty involved. It just doesn't seem to jibe with your views in general about the ethical treatment of animals raised for food. My email is and I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

This is a running battle I have with several people who think that the cheaper they can buy food, the better. And these are people who have the means to pay more. But its a mental block that many don't want to think about. Acknowledging that animals are treated inhumanely so we can have cheap meat means actually having to do something about it, like changing how you shop and prepare food. It means taking responsibility. But it is so worth it. Great blog, Ruth.
