Broadway stars tell tales of musicals that only lasted a "minute." By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) Last Sunday, June 17th, marked the 10th edition of If It Only Even Runs a Minute. For those of you who haven't heard of it, this Bistro Award winning concert series features original cast members telling stories and singing songs from musicals that have been forgotten. The evening was split up into 2 different concerts which we labeled "Act One" and "Act Two." Sometimes funny, somtimes touching, these stories and songs provide for an evening that is both entertaining and educational. Here are some... Continue reading

Take a listen to some of KMM's favorite voices, many of which you may have never heard before. By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) I like when these people sing songs...and when I hear songs sung by these people. Merideth Kaye Clark- Once an Elphaba stand-by on the Wicked tour, a frequent guest at the Old Fashioned Piano Party, her album Young Stellar Object is available on itunes. This video is maybe not the best quality but I love her arrangement on this song! Saum Eskandani- Musical theater actor, jazz singer, and part-time photographer, Saum recently left us for the west... KMM is looking for one of his favorite actresses. By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) As a young white boy growing up on Long Island, I remember coming home after school and watching reruns of the Cosby Show spinoff, A Different World. You remember that show? The one with Dwayne Wayne, and his signature flip up sunglasses? Oh, that rascal! This show was great! It showed that young black men and women could be smart, funny, articulate, and something other than the typical "token" one-dimensional characters portrayed on so many shows today. My favorite character on the show was the southern... Continue reading

KMM shares one of his first memories of being in the theater. By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) In the 9th grade I was cast as Captain Hook in my Jr. High School production of "Peter Pan." To say I was excited, would be a vast understatment. In preparation for the role, I must've watched the Mary Martin version 50 times. Once I got the script, I first counted the number of lines I had, and then immediately started memorizing them. There was something incredibly exhilirating about being on stage back then. For years, I had watched the school plays from... Continue reading

When you hear TMI while in line for rush tickets. By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) WARNING: This blog post may not be suitable for younger readers. Nor prudish readers. Nor my parents. A while back, my roommate came home in a tizzy. He puts down his murse, holds out his pointer finger while shaking his head and says, "Kevin...let me tell you a story." Knowing I'm gonna be in for a treat, I pause the episode of Battlestar Gallactica I'm watching, put down the slice of Ellio's pizza I was probably eating, and curl up on the futon. Here's what... Don't do KMM's job, and he won't do yours. By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) As both a voice teacher and an actor, I sometimes find myself in an awkward position. I'm in rehearsal for a show, when a singer is having vocal trouble. Oftentimes, the musical director steps in with advice on how to remedy the situation. Mostly, this advice is pretty simple and rather vague.(take a breath here, sing an alternate lower note there, etc.) Let me say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. It can solve the problem, and the singer's own technique and vocal journey... Continue reading

KMM takes some time out for himself. By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) I love my job. I get to spend the day teaching people how to sing. How cool is that? That said, because I spend around 30 hours a week helping others sing, I am finding that I am having less and less time to sing for myself. When I do sing, its usually to learn a song for an audition or upcoming performance. Rarely do I get the chance to just sit down at the piano and sing whatever the hell I want. Now, I created my weekly... Continue reading

KMM has an unhealthy obsession with Mac products. By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) If Apple was a cult, I'd drink the Kool Aid. Check out the following apps for the iPhone that bring me joy on a daily basis: 8mm Many people know and love Instamatic and Hipstamatic, but 8mm is even better. With this app you can take old timey videos. Old timey videos are the best! Square This app allows anyone to accept credit cards. We are living in the future. This American Life This app allows you to listen to any episode of your favorite podcast for... Continue reading

The amazing, ephemeral nature of theater. By Kevin Michael Murphy The best and worst thing about theater is that it is ephemeral. One show closes, another one opens, and most people move on. This week was the latest edition of If It Only Even Runs a Minute, a concert series I co-created with Jennifer Ashley Tepper, and Caleb Hoyer. These concerts aim to celebrate musicals that we consider to be "under-appreciated." We bring in original cast members(and sometimes the writers themselves) to tell stories of their experiences creating these shows. The result is nothing short of inspiring. If you are... Because you are worth it! By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) Being an actor sucks. Auditioning really sucks. We've all been there. You prepare for an audition, things are going great, but when you get in the room your nerves get the best of you and you fall flat on your face. If only we had something to help us deal with our anxiety. Well, I recently discovered these "Daily Affirmations for the Actor" on actor, Jack Plotnick's website. Jack teaches workshops on audition anxiety in LA and sometimes in NYC. Check them out! ACTOR AFFIRMATIONS My personal favorites for right... Continue reading

I trust the Sheriff, but I do no trust the deputy. By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) I am the type of person who wants to believe that all people are good. Especially when it comes to men and women in uniform. I've been living in NYC for about 7 years now, and I have had mostly positive experiences dealing with the NYPD. In fact, when I got mugged and assaulted last year, the cops were pretty amazing. Also, when I did jury duty and the cops testified in the case, they seemed like pretty heroic and honest people. That said,... Continue reading

KMM goes to his parents house and reconnects with his awkward teenage self. By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) So I went home to Long Island on Wednesday to visit my nephew, and spent some time digging through my old things. Turns out I wasn't very cool. Exhibit A: Here's a VHS-mini of my star turn as Tommy Albright in Valley Stream Central High School's production of "Brigadoon." Also included in the tape collection were a bunch of movies my friends and I made. We were obsessed with making horror movies. Our biggest hits were "SKREAM"(yes, Scream with a K) and... A new way of finding a husband(or when Match.com just doesn't cut it). By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) So my roommate comes home the other day from his job working at the TKTS booth, and says: "Hey Mama, Remember that time you blogged about the actor who put up posters hoping someone would cast him? Well, I have something for you to blog about. There is this girl who walks around Times Square handing out pieces of paper with a list of requirements of what she is looking for in a husband." This is what I read. Then she listed... Continue reading

KMM goes to see "Merrily We Roll Along" and reminisces about his first year in NYC. By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) So...I just got back from seeing the City Center Encore's production of "Merrily We Roll Along." It was truly an incredible production, and I was particularly moved by the final scene. Frank, Charlie, and Mary, stand on the roof of their NYC apartment and stare up into the sky and sing: Something is stirring, Shifting ground … It's just begun. Edges are blurring All around, And yesterday is done. Feel the flow, Hear what's happening: We're what's happening. Don't... Continue reading

Check out the new production of "Into the Woods" BEFORE it comes to the Delacorte! By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) "Into the Woods" will always hold a special place in my heart for 3 reasons. My decision to attend James Madison University was based entirely on how awesome their 2000 production of "Into the Woods" was. Who doesn't love Joanna Gleason's performance in the original production? I was born to play the role of "The Steward." Here is a picture of me as The Steward in the 2006 NYU production at the Skirball Center. Notice the butt chin, pronounced mole,... Continue reading

A question voice teachers get asked all the time. By Molly McCarthy-Egan(Guest for Kevin Michael Murphy) "Can just anyone, really learn how to sing?" Over the years, I have had this exact same conversation hundreds of times. I am finally taking to the blogosphere to attempt to dispel the myths about learning to sing. The conversation always goes a little something like this: Random Person: What do you do for a living? Me: I am a voice teacher(received with a blank stare)...I teach singing. Random Person: Oh that's so cool! Great! Well let me ask you a question, I've always... Continue reading

KMM sheds some light on every singer's biggest fear. By Kevin Michael Murphy(Actor-Voice Teacher) Every singer I know is terrified by the prospect of getting "nodes." While we all fear it, the shame that many feel towards having a voice disorder prevents them from going to the doctor as soon as there is a problem. Another issue I have found that many singers know very little about voice disorders, and simply throw around the term "nodes," when in fact there are a few different disorders that commonly occur with singers. Thanks to VoiceMedicine.com, a website created by Dr. Lucian Sulica(a... Continue reading

I use this blog and its readership as a platform for my own amusement...and in cased you missed it, it's been a crazy year. Remember the time I blogged about: How I'm able to make the ugliest face in the world Being awesome at Jury Duty then how I am basically a latter day Jessica Fletcher Attending a big gay bachelor party at the NY State Fair Getting approached by child prostitues in Mexico How you need to be prepared...
