I love this post, Jon... I need to bronze it for my girls. Reminds me that you haven't dropped any posts off at Ten to Twenty lately, either... ;)
A Guide to Man Training
It's interesting to be the father of a young woman who is in college and dating. What's interesting is not the act of dating - I really don't want to think about the whole thing - but the realization that she's saying things about her boyfriend that her mother (and the unfortunate ladies I dated...
No one misses Caillou. Ever.
Things that I Miss
I'm not sure where I was.. perhaps buying a baby shower gift (don't get too many of those invites anymore) or maybe even a birthday present. But as I was walking thru the aisles of "little" toys and clothes, it suddenly hit me. There are a lot of things that I miss now that my girls are older...

I know :( I'm really struggling with the fact that they're halfway out of the house. Of course, the fact that they now have no college fund will probably keep them here longer, so maybe I *am okay!

I'm with you.. it's crazy the "expectations" that they have. I remember wanting a lot in middle school but good God not like this.
Great Expectations
Anyone who has been to my house and seen M's room, knows that she isn't exactly a housekeeper in the making. No matter how I beg, plead, threaten or bribe, she just will not keep her room in any resemblance of "neat". So when she started asking for new bedding for her room, I responded with "wh...

I have friends who I swear live by that rule. Really? BBO? So obnoxious. It's better to accept and THEN if a bbo came along, bail with some eloquent excuse.
The Problem With Kids
Is unfortunately, usually, their parents. One of the things that I noticed pretty quickly when we moved back to this area is that in the South people tend to live by the rule of "do as I say, not as I do" - especially when it comes to RSVPs. I have been bitten on more than one occassion by ...
Who? What?
Well, naturally celebrity abuse would lead to cemetery abuse.. because all celebrities end up in the cemetery, right?
One of my other faves was Princess Diana's.. of course I was all defensive because PD didn't die from these means!! Then I read her "tombstone" and couldn't decipher what they wrote but it boiled down to a long trail of gibberish that resulted in Di dying.
Happy Halloween From Your Local Middle School
Don't you love driving around at Halloween time? The scary houses... funny giant cats, ghosts and goblins?! They're great! I have also always loved taking the 2 younger girls to their elementary school where the school grounds are covered in hay bales, cobwebs and friendly scare crows. The midd...

M went to a birthday party in PA where a parent did that... I thought my friend was going to lose her mind. There are sadly, too many instances where parents do these things. I wish I could say they were clueless but we all know that in most instances, they just don't care.

Kids In the Front Seat....
Interesting that I stumbled upon this article today as it was a discussion in our car on the way to school this morning. We still don't know how to protect kids in cars, poll says We know that the rule of thumb in NC is "8 and 80" for a booster seat (and at this rate, Cassie will never be out...

When the Rooster is Away..
I take advantage of it and make all the things that he hates but the girls LOVE. For instance, tonight's request was Chipped Beef Gravy. Steve wouldn't be caught dead eating it so we have to wait til he's gone...... Continue reading

Having spent several years in an industry that served those in the disaster recovery and business continuity community, this is a really great article Jon. How cool is it that a little breakfast nook has a plan so ironclad that it can rock with the big boys like HD and WM. Just goes to show you don't have to be "fancy" to be a big player.
The Waffle House Index
Talk about a brand identity. FEMA has what they call the "Waffle House Index" to gauge how severely an area has been impacted by a natural disaster: Green means the restaurant is serving a full menu, a signal that damage in an area is limited and the lights are on. Yellow means a limited menu, ...

Now see.. I should have sent her every year and I could have written my own book. Of course, I'd have to put the picture in there that she drew that showed her happily sitting at the campfire just for contradiction.

No "scapegoats" for you?
No Need for Healthcare Reform? Really?
Two months ago our daughter was in Myrtle Beach for beach week and while there make the regrettable decision to drive a jet-ski. The result was an accident that led to a trip to the ER in an ambulance. Initially our health insurer denied the claim because we hadn't cleared the trip to an out o...
