We've come a long way from when Pogo was banished for making a little too much fun of Sen. Joseph McCarthy. (Walt Kelly maintained that kids don't read the comics page all that much anyway.)

Ed, do you make any particular efforts to encourage people who see your Facebook feed to visit your blog?

One wonders how C. S. Lewis would have reacted to some of today's "prostitute-wear." I do not think that a very strict or fussy standard of propriety is any proof of chastity or any help to it, and I therefore regard the great relaxation and simplifying of the rule which has taken place in my own lifetime as a good thing. At its present stage, however, it has this inconvenience, that I people of different ages and different types do not all acknowledge the same standard, and we hardly know where we are. While this confusion lasts I think that old, or old-fashioned, people should be very careful not to assume that young or 'emancipated' people are corrupt whenever they are (by the old standard) improper; and, in return, that young people should not call their elders prudes or puritans because they do not easily adopt the new standard. A real desire to believe all the good you can of others and to make others as comfortable as you can will solve most of the problems. (Mere Christianity, 1943) Whatever they might wear to parties or the mall or anywhere else, for my daughter and her high-school classmates, nothing matches the popularity of baggy sweatpants and hoodies for everyday school wear.

So... the grunts get "minimal wages" while the owners rake in millions? Is the point that this is inherently bad, no matter where it happens? Or that it's bad when the owners hypocritically present themselves as liberals?

Yes, and what do we get when we go to read the article? The.... irony? Schadenfreude? Whatever? is too much.

North State Academy was not mentioned! You'd think years of winning 2 or fewer conference games in PACIS back in the 70s and 80s would be worth something.

On the contrary, there is co[s]mic justice here. How much of a "stripper's" (to borrow Opus' term) life can we expect them to put into a daily strip? Nine years (Bloom County proper, not counting Outland and Opus)? Ten (Calvin and Hobbes)? Fifteen (The Far Side)? The fact that we still care about and miss these comics so many years after their ends only emphasizes their greatness. It also, in a backhanded way, validates their creators' decisions to go out on their own terms. Sic transit gloria mundi. Worldly glory is fleeting; mediocrity is eternal.
