Years after naming my child for my grandfather did I learn that it was an Anglicization of his real name. Not so long ago people with ethnic surnames were encouraged to anglicize them so they would fit in better in Canada.
Canadian spelling is legitimate, but finding a single authoritative authority (as evidenced by many of the the previous comments) the differences between what we were taught in school and the American spellings used by our media have left many of us even more confused.
I actually found my way here because I'm a Canadian writer self publishing my first novel, and I want the spelling to be Canadian. But like Wendy, I've long held a suspicion that the Arts Centre was spelled differently than the one in the middle. Glad to have that one cleared up. :)
Center or Centre?
Michael asks: What is the difference between the words centre and center? This is one of the reasons why Oscar Wilde described America and Britain as "two great nations divided by the same language." The words are identical in meaning, but "center" is an American spelling. I believe it's a result...
On the subject of permanence:
I use Identi.ca for microblogging, most often in conjunction with Twitter, and so far all my "dents" can still be retrieved there. So far I've written 7576 notices beginning Friday 28th August 2009

sharing a book can be a struggle
I've been critically re-reading some of my favorite genre authors to try and keep my head in the right place for writing my own novel. So I was only part way through my re-read of Frances Fyfield's "Undercurrents" when I picked up Cory Doctorow's new novel Makers from Wordsworth Books. Since I was otherwise occupied (living in the boonies, one must grab the books one wants when the opportunity arises, particularly since I would much rather patronize an excellent book shop than, say, Amazon. Don't get me wrong, Amazon does a lot right... it is great to get for getting... Continue reading
