The Birth Of Dolly Partisan.... -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) I have been wanting to come up a character to cover the election and our current political climate; someone who is fun and opinionated. My Preggers Angelina Jolie wasn't right for this, nor was good 'ole boy Todd Akindick, neither was Leah Bonnema in correspondent mode. 'Who is right for the job?!' I kept asking myself.... Then it hit me, enter Dolly Partisan. I am a HUGE Dolly Parton fan. She is everything. And another classic moment... So my Dolly Partisan adventure begins! I do hope you will subscribe to... I opened the door. I fell down the rabbit hole. I went through the looking glass. My romance thriller reading adventure. By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) I was stuck on the R train per ujjjj. (How does one spell the annoying common tongue shortening of 'per usual' I have no idea?!) I didn't want to sit there, stuck on a train, thinking. That's where all the trouble begins. I had promised myself that I would not buy any more books from iBook because I have a perfectly wonderful library right next door to my apartment. But, I opened the iBook... Continue reading

I came to TV late. A few things that struck me about my newfound, incredibly delightful, time sucking activity... -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) I missed anything that was on television before 2010. Until last year I have never really watched a series as it happened. Here are some things from my boobtube adventures that as a new comer I find to be mind-boggling. 1.) A SHOW JUST GETS CANCELLED AND THEY LEAVE YOU HANGING, LIKE, FOREVER?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I CAN'T LIVE LIKE THIS. I cannot believe that they will just stop a show and, and that's it.... For all the peeps out there who use football movie references when discussing actual football games. -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) A sketch I wrote inspired by the NFL Draft, my love of football and how whenever I talk about it my mom starts quoting The Replacements! I hope you enjoy! Setting: There is a group of four women sitting around a plastic table playing Canasta. Women are made up to look like a retirement community group. Perhaps some of the ladies are rocking curlers, little sweaters, high socks, nana style velcro sneakers, etc. Sports Announcer 1 (SA 1) and... Continue reading

We got a taste of warm weather this past week letting us know that summer is coming fast! Here are five tips to prep for the sweat attack while you still have time... By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) There was a street fair in Queens this weekend and I saw a man out walking with white sweatpants on and no underwear. When I can see the outline of a penis it's a sure sign that warm weather is extremely close. It has taken me years of New York City living to put together a few easy habits to help keep... Tips from an expert... By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) We try to keep it together. A little bump in the road, uhh, no biggie. We keep pushing and oh, there's another one. Whatever, we can handle it. We remind ourselves how lucky we are to be born in a country with running water. We're being positive! We are grateful! Then one day a whole pile of turd comes crashing down on our heads at the same time. The build up is erupting. It's time for a breakdown! What do we do with all that pent up rage/sadness/desperation/fear? We aren't toddlers... Continue reading

Logging my 10,000 hours. I'm becoming an expert. Malcolm Gladwell would be proud. It was not for selfish purposes, I did all this Netflix binging for the greater good! By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) It's been a while since I've done an installment of Netflix Streaming In My Pants; what a classic series! There have been four of them thus far (hence the Part Five in the title) and I really feel like I nailed a lot of the good ones in the previous posts. If you are looking for what to watch on Netflix and don't want to wade... Continue reading

My therapy hard at work... -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) I tend to ruminate on things. Obsess would be another choice word for it. I do like ruminate better though, it sounds more...intellectual as opposed to panicked. I've come to the conclusion that me with bad thoughts is the same as me with sugar. I just can't have a little. I'm unable to mull over a situation that causes me anxiety and then toss it away in the same manner that I am not going to eat just one Milk Chocolate Cadbury Mini Egg. Neither lies within my wheelhouse of... Continue reading

And the latest in strange things shouted at me from the audience... -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) Once a man asked me "Do you kiss your mama with that mouth" after a show. I know, hack. And although it is phrased as a question it's much more of a statement. He's just letting me know that he finds women talking about stuff they want to talk about offensive and that equals a dirty mouth. A dirty mouth equals unladylike which equals bad, in his book. It's an attempt at making me feel ashamed. But it's so ridic it's too hilarious... Continue reading

A short story about female comedian-hood. -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) People often ask me if I wanted to be a female comedian when I was growing up. I never did. I wanted to be something far more sensible. I wanted to be Han Solo. He always said the awesomest things like "Sorry about the mess" when clearly he wasn't sorry at all. I was always sorry for everything. He was funny. He had those pants with the stripes down the sides. Ugh I loved those pants. So slimming. The thing is I love being a comic. And I love... Relaxing makes me anxious and other stories of mental chaos... -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) I have identified five key problem areas: I can't visualize a positive outcome I have so many things that I want to do I get overwhelmed and do none of them I feel uncreative It's hard for me to forget that we are all dying I second guess everything I do Here are some rando thoughts I keep obsessing about that are symptoms to the problems: I often just decide halfway through a day that I can't take it anymore and I start applying for... A few tips to keep your head above sick water... By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) I received a lot of nice feedback on last week's piece "Welcome To NYC --> Yes That Is Human Poop You're Smelling" (a gal from the rurals gives 15 basic hints on how to make it in these mean streets). AND I GREATLY APPRECIATE those kind words. I do it all for compliments. So... I figured I'd continue on with the helpful hintage this week! Here are 15 must do's when the city is making you sick --> not metaphorically speaking (i.e. literally, but you... Continue reading

A gal from the rurals gives 15 basic helpful hints for making your way in these mean streets... -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) I wish that when I moved to NYC someone had given me a pamphlet with a few easy breezy tips for finding my way. So, on my quest to be the change I want to see in the world, I am going to write said pamphlet. If you are moving from a small town to a big city here are some hard and fast rules. Don't Ever Leave Your Home Without Earphones 1 - People say don't... Continue reading

Ever binged on a Netflix show that you were supposed to be watching with your significant other and then tried to lie your way out of it?! Yeah, no, me neither. -By Leah Bonnema (Stand Up Comic) In honor of Valentine's Day and the new House of Cards promos I wanted to do a little something different this week that combines my love of the Netflix binge and being from New England. This sketch is for you! It's called "House of Cahhhhhhhhhds” and is to be read with a strong New England accent. Oh and yeah, it's not in standard... Continue reading

How to choose the right partner for the apocalypse.... The series continues! -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) It's been a little while but we are back! I've been writing the 'Dating Tips For The Post-Apocalyptic Relationship' series on and off over the past couple of years. It started off as a blog about how to keep a relationship together and slowly moved into making sure you had the right person to help you get through the apocalypse. The Perfect 'Pocalyptic Pair! I thought that as Valentine's Day is fast approaching it's the perfect time for a DTFTPAR rebirth. Even if... Continue reading

This seems to be the year of me participating in activities I've made fun of people for doing. Hot yoga is one of those things. -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) I'm on a roll of doing things that I've questioned in the past. First I started reading (and loving) the Harry Potter books. Now I'm doing yoga. What's next?! Will I get flu shots? With yoga it's not that I was against it, it's that a lot of "yoga people" mentally make me want to dive into the abyss. You know the type... They are always talking about focusing on... Continue reading

What's the saying --> once you conquer your mind, you can conquer anything?! Or conquer your mind before your back goes out?! By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) This past week I had the wonderful experience of performing on the incredibly awesome Naomi Ekperigin and Andy Beckerman's show In Stereo (it's once a month at HiFi --> check it out) where comics step up to the mic in pairs. I duo-ed it up with the very talented and lovely Ayanna Dookie. Ayanna and I are what I'd call pump-each-other-up-partners. We took our "you're gonna rock this next show" supportive text messages... And the story of a woman who loved her guinea pigs. By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) I am incredibly sensitive when it comes to animals. (Arguably I'm incredibly sensitive about a lot of things). My mom reminded me of when they first took me to a Maine seafood restaurant down on the coast. We walked in past a tank of live lobsters where I undoubtably said hello to every one of them. Later in the evening when a plate came out with a cooked lobster on it I started screaming, horrified, "You're eating someone's mommy!!!!!!!!!!" I remember throughout my childhood... Continue reading

Someone get J.J. Abrams' therapist a cheese plate, there was a lot of expectation riding on those shoulders. By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) This post contains NO SPOILERS. Only enthusiasm. As some of you may know from my possibly annoying but definitely passionate posts for the last two weeks (including my Crazytown piece) I did a video countdown to Star Wars. I'd like to share it with you now in its entirety. I hope you enjoy as I certainly enjoyed doing it! Pure Jedi Joy Also please check the playlist, along with other videos, give them a thumbs up (if... Continue reading

We are now just a few days away from the premiere of The Force Awakens and Star Wars fans are surging out of the Dagobah System where they’ve been lost since 1983. -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) I'm an insane Star Wars fan. Probably it's because I watched them so many times with my dad as a kid that it just seeped into my neurons. Even before I was a fully formed toddler I'd been in a room when Star Wars was playing. It must be osmosis. I wanted to be Han Solo. I was in love with Chewie. I... Continue reading

My final four of Christmas albums. -By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) I love Christmas carols. They make me feel giddy, grateful and full of goodness. It's been an incredibly heavy couple of weeks where hate seems to be taking over the headlines so I wanted to spend a moment sharing something that makes me happy. I've always been a Christmas fan. #StarWars An ode to Christmas music in the form of a list. My favorite Christmas albums, in no particular order, and when's the perfect time to listen to them. There are of course Santa's sacks full of great ones.... Continue reading

It's incredibly important for me to actively be a part of something I care about and believe in; to lend my comedy to something bigger than myself, a community that fights for change in the world. One of my such loves is the very badass Lady Parts Justice League! They’re in a league of their own, a league of awesome!!!! By Leah Bonnema (Stand-Up Comic) Tuesday (tomorrow) December 1st is Giving Tuesday, the biggest charitable giving day of the entire year. HOLY SHIT!!! This week has been overwhelming. So much is going on in our world. I wish I had Dumbledore's Pensieve bowl so I could take some thoughts from my head and let them work themselves out for a while. Where's Ben Carson when you need him to brain operate - oh yeah, running for president... What a mess. -By Leah Bonnema (Stand Up Comic) As my brain is still mulling through all the things happening I thought I'd take a moment to shout out some niceness. In no particular order I would like to toast the following for bringing me happiness... Continue reading
