First Lakay Roberts Now Diane Tran What is going on in Texas? With the jailing of Texas honor student, Diane Tran (see new links below), by Houston Justice of the Peace Lanny Moriarty (, ), the Texas educational system continues to generate controversy. Last month, I blogged on, and began organizing for, Lakay Roberts, a brave five year old girl with severe cerebral palsy in New Caney, Texas. Since March, she has not been allowed to use her walker by the very educators who should be celebrating her achievement. ( and In an unusual ruling being followed... Continue reading

Another potential resource.
Standing Ovation for Nancy Weiss
Standing Ovation for Greg Miller. Petitions delivered. Congratulations.
Learning from Dreams Consensus, the goal of much public discussion, has become more elusive than at any time in memory. Public debates quickly degenerate into attacks, blaming and name calling generating conflict, but no solutions. Sadly, we have become unable and unwilling to listen to each other and seek common ground. We cannot even agree on any facts. The cost is staggering. Energies that should be directed towards solving our problems are used to attack our fellow citizens. Resources and energies are wasted. People become disgusted with the process and participation declines. Problems fester. What are the lessons of history?... Continue reading

Would Jesus Give Jadon Higganbothan a Good Punch? Would Jesus Kill Jadon Higganbothan? Introduction Sean “Give Them A Good Punch” Harris, pastor of the of the Berean Baptist Church of Fayetteville, North Carolina, is enjoying his fifteen minutes of fame. Last week he urged parents whose children showed signs of being gay, including limp wrists to “Give them a good punch.” The message provoked a strong, negative reaction, prompting the pastor to issue a retraction. Later, Sean Harris claimed his comment was a joke. Do the retraction and explanation resolve all concerns regarding this matter? Could Sean Harris’ Words Provoke... Continue reading

Letter from a former worker at the Rotenberg Center describing what he saw and did for three years. includes quite a few resources. MISTREATMENT OF DISABLED CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS Judge Rotenberg Center - Graduated Electronic Decelerator - Electric Shock. The shock is not administered immediately after the behavior. It is activated once the staff member who is in possession of the remote device is in agreement with another staff member who assesses the situation and ensures that the shock will be administered to the correct student. The shock lasts for 2 seconds. Used as a tool for behavioral modification and punishment. Many students carry a backpack which contains the device with leads to the electrodes or gloves emit the shock. The electrodes may be placed on the back of hands, top of feet, fingers through use of gloves, thighs, forearms, etc. The amount of milliamps ranges from 15mA - 41mA. The updated GED-4 is rated at 45 milliamps. In comparison a police stun gun is rated at 1mA - 4mA. According to Boston Magazine the inventor, Dr. Matthew Israel himself has called its shocks "very painful." The device may be connected to a student for days, months, or even years. Once a shock is administered the pads are then relocated on the student. I also e mailed a similar letter to 28 e mail addresses listed here What will you do? Let me know. Let's share ideas.
Here is the letter I just faxed to the fax number listed for the church on the Wayback Machine (910) 868-9609 _______________________________________________ Berean Baptist Church 517 Glensford Drive Fayetteville, NC 28314 Via Fax to (910) 868-9609 Take away the Verbal Matchbox Dear Sirs: When kids play with matches around flammable materials, you take the matches away. You don't care what the intent is. The danger of injury or death is too great. Just take the matches away. Rev. Harris has a distinguished career with worthy accomplishments. I am not asking that those accomplishments be ignored. I am not even asking that Rev Harris, as human being, be subject to any negative judgment. I am asking you to see the risk involved. That risk must be stopped. His words were more powerful than matches. It has been made available to millions online. Everyone knows that unstable listeners can be motivated to act by such words. You witnessed all this. You heard. Rev. Harris’ behavior was more dangerous than a child with a matchbox. If he was playing with matches, you would take the matchbox away. No questions asked. When this speech is make available to millions online, the potential impact is far greater. If the Berean Baptist Church wants to behave like a group of responsible adults, then you need to take away Sean Harris' ability to urge violence to millions. Take away his verbal matchbox. Let Lakay Walk Support our brave role model of determination by Lee Tilson The purpose of this page is to serve as an information hub of links and information about 5 year old Lakay Roberts in her attempts to use her walker while attending school in the New Caney school district in Texas. I am supporting her family's efforts to get permission for her to use the walker at school. According to news reports, that permission was recently revoked because Lakay fell once after the person preparing her walker for her failed to "snap" the walker into place. It collapsed.... Romney's comment that "corporations are people" was made in a discussion of taxes. If we assume that what he was saying was that "corporations are people" for purposes of tax law, then corporations should be taxed like people. Michigan recently eliminated the income tax for most corporations. If corporations are people for purposes of tax law, then the State of Michigan should not have eliminated the income tax on corporations. Will Romney come to Michigan and campaign for reinstating the tax of corporations? I am guessing not. What is this metaphorical meaning of his assertion that "corporations are people"? On its face, the comment is silly. Until he fills in the blanks, it remains just that, silly.
