I completely agree with the above the comment. You love him and you know in your heart he's worth it. And even though he is thinking of your feelings, like a good man does, supporting him through what he is about to go through will mean so much to him. I was in the Marines and though I found the love of my life and he decided he did not want to wait for me, which shatter me to pieces. But I got over it and fell in love again with someone who supports me. And now I'm out and an Army Wife, supporting him 110%. Be there for each other. It goes a long way.
