I don't want Typepad to be Facebook. I liked it a lot the way it was. Will we be forced to move to the new interface? A big mistake, in my opinion.

This overprotectiveness has all sorts of bad effects on kids. For another slant, see Richard Louv's book, Last Child in the Woods, where he coins the term "Nature Deficit Disorder" for kids who never have a chance to just roam around and explore in the woods by themselves, like I used to do for many, many hours when I was a kid. For the past 10-15 years or so, I have participated in a semi-yearly scout orienteering meet where I serve as an orienteering instructor for scout troops. In the last few years, there's been a noticeable diminishing of the kids' ability to walk in the woods for an hour or so. In the early days, it was a challenge to keep up with the kids and all their energy. But in the last few years, the groups I've been assigned got totally tuckered our after going for about a mile and then would talk incessantly about when are we going to stop for lunch. It's a sad situation when an over-60 slightly overweight woman can walk longer than group of 8-12-year-old kids. The whole thing is not good for kids' ability to take care of themselves, not good for their health or psyche, not good for their parents, who must go nuts trying to stay on top of everything that is expected of them. We are just so unwilling these days to take reasonable risks that we lose a lot more than we gain. (A lot of parallels here with our reaction to terrorists. Look at the huge inconvenience and expense we are going through with Homeland Security - reducing our quality of life immeasurably just to avoid what is probably a small risk.)

I like the idea of a Typepad app for the iPhone, but I did have some issues with this implementation. First, my Category list was blank. How can I get it to see my existing categories? Second, sometimes when I took a photo and said Use Photo it worked (put me into the post edit screen) and sometimes it didn't do anything but just went back to the main menu. Third, this app is only for creating a post and has no interface to manage posts. So I still have to use the web interface to manage posts. That means I have two almost identical Typepad buttons - one green and one blue - and have to keep track of which is which. Still, it's nice to be able to photoblog on the fly.
