I wouldn't minimize the importance of your friends, followers and connections - you definitely want them to keep visiting your blog! After all, they're the people who are most likely to share your content with their own networks, which will extend your visibility and hopefully attract new readers for you.
Guest blogging is certainly another way to attract new readers. First I would start by finding the blogs that have a similar audience and purpose to yours, and then build relationships with those bloggers on social media and/or by commenting on their posts.
