crabel writes "In Java 1.6.0_21, the company field was changed from 'Sun Microsystems, Inc' to 'Oracle.' Apparently not the best idea, because some applications depend on that field to identify the virtual machine. All Eclipse versions since 3.3 (released 2007) until and including the recent Helios release (2010) have been reported to crash with an OutOfMemoryError due to this change. This is particularly funny since the update is deployed through automatic update and suddenly applications cease to work." slashdot bug java oracle sun upgrades story *Click Here to read more... via www.applicationsjava.com Vision-less change from @@Oracle Continue »

Dave, a Java developer, writes: I recently celebrated my 40th birthday. A friend joked, "Hey, guess that means you're too old to program anymore!" I laughed on the outside, but it gave me pause. COBOL guys faced this problem years ago as Java guys were ascending the ranks, and we laughed about legacy code and their inflexibility with new technology. Dave dispels 5 pervasive, negative myths about older software developers. He continues:There are a number of myths about older software developers that continue to be perpetuated in IT and software development that somehow put older, experienced workers at a disadvantage... The team is still tuning for better performance as we speak. We are glad to get pointers on pages that render improperly. Over the years the site used various... Continue »

Being an open source and independent platform, users do not have to struggle with heavy license fees each year. Java API's can easily be accessed by developers. It can embrace the concept of exception specifications. It allows developers to create modular programs and reusable codes. Another advantage of JAVA is that, if the program is written in java, one can run it anywhere means that application developed through Java is platform independent. For a turnkey solution over J2ME, one... Continue »
