Interests: i love to read, thoughts, i’m a hardworking mom who loves her family more than life itself, sees a lot of things in this world that don’t make sense, and tries to make each day a little brighter for the people she loves. i love to write, love to create. whether it’s a good meal, a scrapbook, or something intangible like a story, i’m always creating. i love to watch people… imagine what their life story is and what motivates them as they pass by. i believe in looking for the best in everyone and everything and that we are all here for a reason (even if we haven’t discovered what they are yet) opinions are mine (unless otherwise noted) and as such, are copyrighted. ©copyright 2008, 2009 lois a. houston,

I've gotta go find this stuff. My 14 year old and I stay sick all winter with sinus things. I'd LOVE a natural approach to getting past them.

You're doing so much better than me! I average 4-5 hours of "good" sleep a night. I've been trying to use some essential oils a friend gave me to see if they help. Seems to be helping me to stay asleep longer at night. I guess we will see, too. :)

Thursday was the first day of school for the girls. They were so excited, and I guess I was, too, given that I woke up at 4AM and never went back to sleep! (which is becoming a bad habit, I might add) After getting dressed and ready with surprising speed (and why is it that it’s always so stinkin’ easy that first week or so of school? And then they turn into sloths and can’t move faster than –23 miles per hour?) the girls came downstairs to enjoy some bacon, eggs and cheese sandwiches. Then it was picture time: Oh... Hello, my friend! I did not know that there were books to go with the Bones series!! I just discovered that show this summer and I'm hooked! Now I will have to go find the books. Thanks!!! Love ya, Lois

I thought I’d share with you another installment of the books I’ve been reading this summer. My reading has slowed down in the past few weeks – mostly because it’s been so busy around here that by the time I finally sit still in the evenings, I’m too sleepy to read for more than a few minutes and then I crash! I’ve been into some mystery/crime novels this summer. Not sure why, except that I can’t seem to stomach any romance novels right now. The escapism of the mysteries seem to be what I’m looking for – and enjoying –... Continue reading

Let me know how you like it! The girls had it for breakfast again today. It was just as good warmed a little in the microwave as it was fresh from the oven yesterday.
It's my favorite view! I love living close to the mountains... Thanks for stopping by!

It WAS fun. I love days like that - when we can just be a family and not worry about chores, jobs, or other things besides being together.

One of my girls’ favorite breakfast treats are the chocolate, chocolate-chip muffins that are sold in a Duncan Hines mix. Now, while the box says that it is a whole-grain recipe, I have been pretty sure I could make them more healthy if I made them on my own. Heck, just using my freshly-ground flour and eliminating the preservatives the box mix has will make a huge difference, I think. So, I started hunting for a recipe to play around with. This morning, I experimented and I think I’ve come up with a pretty close replacement to the box mix.... Continue reading

No work lately on my Project Life album, but I’m not too concerned. I’m planning a weekend getaway with some girlfriends soon and I know I will have plenty of time that weekend to get the album caught up. Right now, I’m just trying to keep up with picture taking. I didn’t take many the beginning of the week, and was a little worried about it until we had a little adventure on Friday which resulted in a ton of pictures. So, it all worked out in the end. This week school starts, so we’ll have tons of pictures I... Continue reading

It’s the first week (sort of) of school here. The girls go back on Thursday and Open House is tomorrow afternoon. We’re in the Final Launch Countdown mode here in our house this week. Phone calls from the new teachers, phone calls to friends to see who their teachers are, final purchases and preparations. It’s all very exciting. I’m looking forward to getting us back on a routine and to having my workdays a little less fragmented… but I know I’m going to miss having the girls around at the same time. Things will be busy, for sure, especially when... Continue reading

It’s 4:06 AM and I’m wide awake. WIDE-stinkin’-AWAKE. It’s been one of those nights. Little Bit came stumbling into our bedroom around 1:00 because her alarm clock had gone off in her room and woken her up. SuperMan put her back to sleep but then I was waking up every fifteen minutes because I was afraid he wouldn’t come back to bed and he’d miss his alarm clock going off. Finally, I went and got him so we could all sleep properly (read: I could sleep properly!) and all was well. Storms were blowing in and there was a lot... Continue reading

If you have been a reader for a while, you’ve probably figured out that most Wednesdays mean a new recipe post on the blog. But what you may not know is that I’ve created a quick and easy reference for you to use to go back and find a recipe. So, when you decide you want to try out my crock pot lasagna or maybe bake a Sunshine cake, you can quickly and easily access the recipes without a lot of searching and scrolling. Simply click on one of these links: You can click on the “Recipes” link on the... Continue reading

What a whirlwind weekend. Friday we spent a good part of the day buying school shoes and finalizing our back-to-school shopping. We’re all done (thank goodness) and I’m now broke (ha!) so I guess that is a good thing that we’re done. I also spent some time Friday evening organizing my recipe books. If you recall, I bought these adorable cookbooks that I had planned to use for storing my recipes. I finally sat down and sorted and organized and purged and organized and… well, you get the idea. Now I have three adorable cookbooks on my shelf - One... Continue reading

We’re in the countdown to the first day of school here… And, believe it or not, I’m actually looking forward to it. While I was so terribly excited for the girls to get out of school back in May, I am equally excited about them starting school again in a few weeks… Here are a few reasons why: While I love (initially) not having a schedule, the lack of routine causes us to slip into some not-so-good habits – staying up too late, sleeping in later than we should, eating junk, etc. I’m looking forward to getting back into a... One of the things I love about summertime is the abundance of fresh fruit. I eat tons and tons of fruit and try to relish every bite, saving the sensations for those cold winter days when fruit is less plentiful and is shipped in from South America or other exotic locales – and is therefore picked early to maintain freshness in shipping. It just doesn’t have the same juicy flavors then… the flavors of summer. When I was a girl, my mom would make this fruit cobbler. I remember it being a special treat we’d enjoy with ice cream and... Andrea, I do a little of both. Working on my semi-traditional Project Life album this evening... so I dabble wherever the muse hits me. Thanks for stopping by!
Shelly, just trying to learn Photoshop - not leaving SBC+ behind. I just own it and feel like I ought to use it. Also, there are some photo editing things you can do in PS that I haven't figured out how to do in SBC+ (like using layered images on photos - like frames) - Well, let me restate that. I can do it in SBC+ but not Memory Manager and I don't want to create a scrapbook page just to edit a picture with a frame or overlay... do you know how to do this in MM?
