I love reading about all of the wonderful things you do with your students...like Sarah, I wish I could join in the fun, too!
playing with pine boughs
Each year after the Winter Garden Festival at the preschool, we simply gather all the pine boughs used to create the spiral and bring them into the backyard. As you can imagine, the children invent endless ways to bring these branches into play... ...they have "planted" them in the snow to buil...
Happy Birthday! Hope you have a joyful day even if it doesn't involve laboring :) and if it does involve labor, may you be surrounded by love and strength as you celebrate both of your birthdays.
P.S. Love the newest edition of Alphabet Glue!
Mostly Ready... But Definitely Still Waiting.
We've got a huge stack of cloth diapers, a pair of tiny mittens and some very soft and snugly receiving blankets at the ready, which as far as I can remember, is pretty much everything you need to have a baby. Oh, and a high tolerance for sleep deprivation. What we do not yet have is a baby....
Thanks, Dawn. It really is a fun way to create some special keepsakes and I know we will treasure our Sicilian menorah for a long time.

sand candles
Lee is representing this year at the Island Christmas Boutique. he made some "Ward's Island Beach Candles." Our neighbour gave us a bag of old half-used candles and we melted them down, added some crayons for colour, and poured them into our sand and rock molds. (the wax has to be hotter...

We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Douglas Florian...My son likes his dino book of poems and a few of his other critter books but my favorite book of his is "On the Wing" since I am such a bird nut. Thanks for highlighting one of our favorite poets.
On the Shelf: Dinothesaurus.
We are having a spell of pretty hot (and more importantly, humid) weather here in Vermont, and spending a little bit of time indoors with a book in the afternoon is turning out to be a pretty pleasant choice as far as activities go. In preparation for the coming days of hot, we decided to mak...

Oh yes, "The Write Start"...I've been wanting to get my hands on that, too. Thanks for the reminder! Headed off to look up "One Thousand Gifts" since that is new to me. Thanks!

I am on the hunt for some good reading/listening/watching recommendations! The hunt started with preparations for an upcoming trip, but it is also spurred on by my realization that summer is right around the corner. And although it has been many years since I was a student, I still love having a...

Yes, it is a good book for middle school readers up to adults...interesting story, fascinating details about the Oregon Trail, memorable characters, and the natural world plays quite a large part in the tale. It would actually be a great summer read because it moves along so quickly. It would also be a fun book to read/discuss with an older child.
I would put it right up there with "Hattie Big Sky" and "The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate". I read it last week because the author, Kimberly Willis Holt, was visiting our local school and I am so glad I did. I couldn't help myself from marking this passage about the nests. Birds play quite a part in the story. And I also marked the final lines of the book:
"It was an old story. They'd both heard the tale many times. But a good story traveled like water, constantly flowing, making rivers from one person to the next, returning and filling them up again.". Isn't that wonderful, too?
Proof
Spring arrived, and Delilah spotted new nests every day. She discovered them in tree branches and corners under the porch cover. She even found one in the hold of the barn wall. The birds crafted their nests from bits of twigs, dead grass, corn husks, and Delilah’s hair. She loved seeing her ...

It really was my pleasure and thank you again for doing the interview! I have one quick request...if you ever get any photos of baboons visiting in your garden, please, please share them with all of us over at the TMG flickr group. Happy weekend wishes to all of you, too.
