Thank you for mentioning the GoGirls Twitter chat Yannick! It's an amazing place to connect with musicians and music industry professionals. It's not just for women! We have just as many guys on the chat now. 3 years after its inception, we have become THE place to connect and share ideas about the music business. Each week we all walk away more knowledgeable.

Thank you for spotlighting this Clyde! It's always great teaming up with Ariel Hyatt and all the other fabulous people in the music business who share the same objective - helping indie artists create, thrive and earn a living in the music business.

Hey Clyde, thank you for sharing my thoughts on the latest Facebook algorithm change. I think it's a reminder to everyone that it's important to gain knowledge about other network sites (like Twitter, Instagram & Google+), learn how to use them and adjust your online marketing plan as the tide shifts. It's never wise to focus efforts where you get little or no traction. It's also a reminder to not spend all your time and energy on one social network because at some point it can change. I think it's better to diversify even if just a bit. I remember when we all thought Myspace was king and that it would surely never go away. We now laugh at that. My advice: watch the trends, and most important, educate yourself on popular and emerging social media sites.

Good points, Clyde. As for me, I'm into reciprocating. Of course with my 15K following/followers I use lists. It's such a great feature that seems to be overlooked by many.

Hey Clyde, this is great information. I'm glad you shared this. So many bands are under-utilizing the Facebook Timeline. These apps can really help. You rock, man!

Great advice! I agree with all points listed above. I go every year and have found success from doing these things.

I think audio tagging is brilliant! I'm excited to see how this plays out on Superbowl Sunday. What a great way to utilize Shazam.

Hey Tracy, thank you for having me guest blog. I really enjoyed writing this for your readers. Please feel free to post any questions here.
Great post, RJ! I agree with you 100%. I've worked with bands where we experienced the same thing. Most people like receiving a personal message from the artist after liking their page. I can understand FB wanting to curb spamming but what you're doing and the way you're doing it is what FB is supposed to be about - engaging with friends and fans. Keep rockin' it!

I just started a new hashtag, #madalynstip, where I put out good, useful social media tips. I also started one called #ggchat. It's a Twitter Chat for members of the GoGirlsMusic.com community that I run.

You cannot sign up as a band or business just yet. It's for personal profiles only at this time. Google plans to unveil business pages soon. Join my circle at http://gplus.to/madalynsklar

I agree with you on this Clyde. Social network sites can come and go. Remember when bands would redirect their website URL to Myspace? You don't own your space on these sites. It's free and can disappear in a heartbeat. But of course I'm a strong advocate for social media as they are a great way to increase your online presence, to compliment your band's website. I always recommend that musicians set up and maintain their own dot com. It is not costly at all. You can get a domain cheap at GoDaddy then set up a free WordPress or Tumblr site. It can be as simple as one page with your photo, bio, song player (I recommend using ReverbNation's widget), links to your social media sites and links to purchase your music online. Simple. Easy. You own it.

Great article, Mark! It will be very interesting to see where this goes. And I agree with your statement that the music industry may save Facebook but Facebook will probably do little to save the music industry. I'll be keeping a watchful eye.
