*Disclaimer: This week's post isn't so much about capstone as it is about something I experienced this week that made me flashback to Marketing Strategy* So there's this ad. It's nothing super special, it may be only mildly amusing to most people but it single-handedly changed my beliefs and behavior (which for me is amazing). I fell in love with this deceptively simple ad because it spoke to me in a way that I can't ever remember an ad speaking to me before. With this ad, it was as if someone on Amazon's marketing team made a target audience description... Continue reading

This week I was reminded, once again: if you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there.I had been chugging along on this project for the past 5 weeks, thinking I've made a lot of progress until last week's project review. While assessing all of the data I've amassed through my research phase it became clear that the marketing problem I was trying to solve was unclear. While I have some things cleared up, I definitely think part of the reason I was so willing to follow the path that I was on was because I was... Continue reading

I’m actually on schedule. I know the whole purpose of a project charter is to set a manageable set of goals and timelines but I don’t think in all of the years I’ve been doing freelancing/consulting, I’ve ever been on schedule before. I’m pretty sure I’ve jinxed myself, but still… I got to thinking about my project timeline as I began putting the final touches on my first capstone presentation. I finally give the presentation tonight. I’ve been so immersed in this quarter’s capstone that I had to study what my recommendations were. It’s been interesting comparing and contrasting the... Ten depth interviews in and what have I learned: professors are really opinionated. I've learned more than that, but it was interesting that what were originally supposed to be 15 minute interviews ended up ranging anywhere from 30 - 1:30. When interviewing DAAP faculty for my capstone, it made me fall in love with consumer research again. The fact that I could ask (essentially) the same questions to the same 10 people and get 10 completely different answers was really fascinating. I interviewed these stakeholders in order to use their perception and importance variables around the new DAAP Themes initiative... Continue reading

This week has been interesting in that even though it doesn't look like I've made much progress, I'm still a lot further along than I was this time last quarter. In the last 2 weeks, I've been able to finalize a project charter and begin depth interviews. This was probably made a lot easier due to the fact that I was given a list of possible interviewees this time around. This past weekend, I took the Applied Social Influence course; it couldn't have been more timely. I'm going to have to use the techniques I learned on Friday and Saturday... Continue reading

For the first time in any consulting experience I’ve had, I had to tell the client “you’re doing too much”. Every time I meet with my client at the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, it’s interesting to see the puzzled looks from faculty who are clearly wondering shouldn’t she have graduated already? I can’t really blame them, with weekly client check-in meetings it may seem like I never really left. With all of the resources and assistance being offered to me in the past two weeks, I’m experiencing a completely different capstone. The one struggle I’ve had is... Continue reading

This past weekend I had the amazing opportunity to participate in the Rotman Design Challenge at the University of Toronto. We were the only team to unianimously move on to the final round and the only team to create physical protoypes and books — we came in second. A long time from now, when I'm not so bitter about the outcome from the experience, I will probably come away with a few key points that are likely to renew my faith in myself and my marketing and design capabilities: I can create a surpising amount of great work in 24... I would love to be able to say that I have completed my first capstone and am now in the project charter creation phase of my next client. If I did, I would only be telling a half truth. This week brings with it both excitement and new opportunities. This Tuesday is my "initial" client meeting with my next capstone client. I say "initial" because we have already met professionally on several occasions. I have to admit I'm a bit excited and apprehensive about the level of excitement and engagement of this client. In the conversations I have had with... Continue reading

In what seems like the typical flow of progression for this capstone, I got one more thing done, and a few more opportunities to excell* presented themselves. The biggest challenge I forsaw was trying to find appropriate subjects for my depth interviews. For several reasons, I do not have acess to customers in my category, so I had to focus on competitive consumers of home entertainment systems. Most of my friends are graduate students or recent college grads — not exactly consumers of high-end electronic systems. For a while, I was worried about having to resort to cold-calls. But while... Most of today was spent in between Findlay Market and my kitchen. With the week I have ahead of me, I figure it would be wise to make the week’s worth of food today so I won’t be distracted later. While I was chopping veggies it hit me, I’ve been approaching Marketing, and this capstone like I would a baking cupcakes when it’s really more like cooking. Cooking is an art; baking is a science. Baking requires strict adherence to the recipe, improvisations ruin the end result. With cooking, improvisation is encouraged, you can almost instantly tell when something is... Continue reading

This week brought a lot of progress for my capstone. In addition to discovering some much needed industry research, I had what could easily be described as the most productive meeting I’ve ever had with my capstone client. I have to admit, I’ve been skeptical of the praises the UC College of Business Library, but this week has made me a believer. It deserves all of the praise the professors give it just based on the BizMiner subscription alone. The information I received on the Cincinnati metro area of the Household Audio and Video Equipment market served as an excellent... Continue reading

I’ve been whistling the 1981 Queen/David Bowie “Under Pressure” classic all day. Aside from it being an amazing song, I usually find myself humming, whistling and or lip-synching that song after just barely meeting a deadline. Unfortunately, I’ve been humming that song a while lately. This week, it dawned on me that I’m in the midst of week 5 of what was supposed to be a seven-week engagement – cue panic-fueled progress. In the past few weeks I’ve hit a couple of roadblocks that have slowed down my progress on this capstone and it wasn’t until the last week that... Continue reading

*warning, there are no musical/dance numbers in this post. …only with a lot less auto-tuned musical numbers or unbelievable twentysomethings playing high school students. This quarter has resembled Glee in that every week there seems to be a “Very Special” theme that resonates throughout each week. This week’s theme has been communication (or lack thereof), and just like with Glee, the theme of communication has just been dragging on. Most of my frustrations about miscommunication have come from work, but my the lack of communication has been a major theme during my capstone experience thus far. The most frustrating part... This week has been consumed by contracts and worrying about contracts. I spent a lot of time (probably way more than I should have) worrying about constructing thorough project charters for my first two clients. I probably spent much more time than I should have worrying about this project because this week I found myself dealing with a headache caused by not creating a specific project charter for an existing client. For the past few months, I have been hunting down a freelance client for payment because I wasn’t specific enough about payment schedules in my original project proposal. Ever... Continue reading

Focusing on quality over quantity seems to have been a recurring theme over the past few weeks in both work and capstone. This week, I had the pleasure of meeting with two different capstone clients – each with very different communication styles and challenges. During my first meeting, I met with Perfect Solutions AV an organization that specializes in customized audio and visual solutions. This project brings with it not only the challenge that I am not overly knowledgeable in the field, but the fact that I will be working with a brand new company (they were officially established during...
