I have worked at two food banks and can confirm that they are among the most frugal charities out there. They will take your donation--food or money--and stretch it as far as possible to feed the most people. Food banks provide food to dozens, and sometimes hundreds of soup kitchens and food pantries in the areas they serve.
Both food banks I worked for were in the Feeding America network (Orlando and Atlanta) and both are run by some of the best, most selfless people I have ever met. Sadly, demand for food bank services is rising, and many times the people who need help have jobs. They just don't earn enough to make ends meet. If you have the time or money to give, food banks are a great way to help.
Feeding Hungry People and Other Charitable Acts
This is epic-length, well for this medium at least, but forgive me. I felt it was an important topic and I trust that if you hang out around here you have a long enough attention span to handle it. Besides, I got to make up terms and use bullet lists and my deeply geeky writer side is just da...

Mystery solved! Thanks to Michelle (AKA @eatniks), we now know that they are Gooseneck barnacles! As for how one would cook a barnacle, well, let's leave that for another day, shall we? (A day really, really, really far from now.)
Thanks for the kind words Jess - coming from you "great photos" means a lot. :)
Foodie Heaven: La Boqueria
On summer weekends, you can usually find me wandering around at a farmer's market, or riding my bike and thinking about what I'll buy later at the market. So when we went to Barcelona (part of this epic adventure), I had to go to La Boqueria. You should go too. Get on a plane. Now. The market is...

Wish I could claim credit for the veggie board idea. Mine tells me today it looks like a good time to make some soup! I ordered the stick-on chalkboards that the BittenWord guys recommended from Amazon, and so far am pleased. Nothing else (no magnets) will stick to the front of my fridge.
Buy Local Challenge Week: Sort of Like March
The challenge started on a weekend, when I was in my cooking groove. Not rushed at all. I was calm and relaxed and made it to not one but two farmer's markets over the weekend. I was ready. Then Monday set in. Followed by Tuesday, Wednesday... well, you know, all those days that you have to show...

Thanks Erika - I thought the beetle bags seemed to just attract more beetles too, but haven't tried much else. They weren't too bad last year (maybe something with the weather?), but I think they like the heat, so they're likely to be back in droves this year.
The garlic scape pesto recipe I posted on Twitter was part of the CSA newsletter I write each week for Summer Creek Farm. Here's a link that week's e-mail (feel free to subscribe - all are welcome, even if you aren't a member of our CSA). http://eepurl.com/zlBP
Garden Check-In
When I wrote the first post about my rookie garden, I didn't really believe it would actually grow. I wanted to believe, but having killed too many houseplants, I was lacking a certain confidence. Now, look at it! Yes, there are some things that likely won't make it. A tomato plant, probabl...

I planted mostly lettuces (the cut and come again type), a few kinds of tomatoes and peppers, scallions, spinach, radishes and a couple eggplants. Only some annual herbs are in there (parsley, basil, dill, lavendar) - my perennials are in pots, as are the beans and cucumbers. Having killed many a houseplant, I am a bit nervous about this, but it's fun so far.
A Rookie's Garden
Oh the possibilities. I've dreamed for years of having a vegetable garden, but with a backyard roughly the size of a large quilt, it just didn't seem feasible. So I've kept herbs in pots, and have gradually accumulated quite a large number of containers. (I've now started buying more in secre...

The Truffle Shuffle - Part 2
Or alternatively, "If I keep this up, I'm going to need stretchy pants." (See Part 1 here.) Finally got to enjoy the long-awaited Valentine's truffle class at The Kitchen Studio. (Yes, it's March. But remember the Snowpocalypse? Class was initially scheduled for blizzard, Day 0.) First thing y...

Thanks - I really like the way the flower pic turned out too. I was thinking of you when I took it! :) Truffle class was a lot of fun. Beth, Cathy and I were plotting a food tweet-up... I'm thinking cookbook swap.
Day Off Around Frederick
Because it's what I really wanted for my birthday, yesterday my husband and I took the day off. We were planning to go for a rare long bike ride together, but the flood warnings nixed that idea. So instead we ate. And ate. And ate. First, we went for a Frederick Restaurant Week lunch at Quynn...
