Thanks Audra! We are making plans right now to return in October. I have an amazing contentment when I'm in Burundi, knowing I'm supposed to be there working side-by-side with Dan and our wonderful team there!!
Burundi Recap #1 Mighty To Save
We've been back from our 3 month trip to Burundi for about a month -- one of our team members, Tricia, created this video recap from the point that she joined our trip, which was about 3 weeks from the end. It was so good to watch it today and remember that God is mighty to save!
I wish you could be here to experience what we experience Cris! I just know that you'd love it and if you brought your whole family, it would change your lives forever. Maybe one day!! Love hearing from you -- you are one of maybe 5 people who have ever commented on my blog ;-)
Patrice
I just wanted to share one story of life-transformation from our 3 days of evangelism in Bubanza last week. On Monday, we shared the Gospel with two men who were working together. When we were finished, the older of the two men thanked us for sharing. Told us he was already saved, in fact, he wa...
Thank you for your prayers! He's my hero (most days!)
Zanzibar via Dan via Twitter via Facebook
God is doing some amazing things in Zanzibar. Keep praying for seeds to be planted and sown, for the churches in Zanzibar to be strengthened and encouraged, that they would be committed and passionate about sharing the Gospel now that they have been trained and equipped by Dan and his team, that...
Thanks Mia - should we pick a different mountain? Maybe we could start at the Prayer Garden on Shea and hike the back way? I bought mascara yesterday. Haven't remembered to buy any for about 6 months. Also bought some heavy duty Loreal moisturizer. My skin feels so dry and parched!
Last Of Summer - Checking In
I've got exactly two weeks to complete my "Last of Summer" list. I'm happy to report that I've been making great progress on 2 of the items and have checked 1 of the 7 items off the list: "I'd like to finally pick out a new pair of glasses..." It was difficult and I lost the will to keep sho...
It was a fun weekend - I'm so glad you and Dominick made the drive, thanks so much again for bringing the car and for hanging out and "making us" go to Nogales Dogs and 5 Guys and Chino Bandidos. We're always looking for a good excuse to indulge in our favs. Next time we should do Pita Jungle. I haven't been there in way too long! I've got ideas for the Good Morning song that will make it longer and even more fun for the kids. I'll try to get over to Jeff's house to record them. I think he can just modify the file for us.
We Go To Africa!
Welcome to Rock The Desert!! In 2007, our lives were turned upside down as we realized that the next season of life would include forsaking pride, professions & possessions and leading short-term mission trips to Africa! Click on WE GO TO AFRICA! in the side bar to read about our expeditions ...
Oh, is today the 24th already? I will get right on it - had a few other things on my mind the last couple of days (see "Desperation Matters" below)

I've been slowly making an album come to life this summer of our most recent trip to Africa. I'm bogged down in the final details. Can't seem to quite wrap it up, but I totally love it and the creative process has "sparked" other creative projects. Do it! Your family will be amazed and grateful! P.S., It's even easier if you type up the memories in a pretty font (at least size 14-16) so you can edit easily. Then you print and cut and paste along with the pictures.

Katie, I "spark into wild color" when I run, but it's because my face is bright red! My friends who run say there's nothing like it - keep running, keep "sparking into wild color", have you heard of Vibram five-finger shoes? Supposed to be great help for runners!

Debbie, that is a fantastic, inspired idea - you're right, moms are moms regardless of country, status, etc. When we go to Africa in November we will do a Medical Clinic along with our Church Planting - last time we did this, the place was mobbed every day, tons of moms with sick, even dying kids. Go for it!

That is such a gift - creativity in all forms reflects our Creator - a church I previously attended wrote a lot of their own dramas - such a great season of ministry!

Kathy Lee, you must read it. If you haven't read Cold Tangerines, check that one out too! I lent that one out so many times that I can't remember who got it last so, I've got to buy another copy for myself (to lend out again)

Bittersweet Giveaway This Week!
Let me just tell you some really good news - this could be your lucky week - really, it could be so great if you were to: 1) read my official, *starred*, succinctly-written, un-biased review of Bittersweet by Shauna Niequist, to be posted on Wednesday, August 18 AND if, after reading the review...
I should put "visit Japan" on my next list of 7 things to accomplish. Remind me to do that or else I might decide to visit Montenegro or Greenland instead.
45
45 is a new number for me to think about - I never thought much about 44, but 45 has great significance in that I'm now only 5 years from 50! At 45, I'm quite possibly halfway through living the one and only life I've been given, assuming I live to be 90! Over the last 5 years I've had lots...
If you have the BEFORE pics, I think they will be a stark contrast the the finished product - your side definitely needs to be told!
The Lodge Facelift
I am not an interior designer by any stretch of the imagination. My idea of decorating is to leave it to the professionals, i.e., my mom, my mother-in-law, my daughter, whoever stops by with a helpful suggestion. I know what I like and most importantly, what I don't like, and within reason, I'm ...
Epic fail on #7 - I was just at the library picking up a book for Steven (AP English assignment due 1st day of school) and just on a whim, like it was a brilliant idea out of nowhere, I thought I'd pick up some books to read while on my trip to CA. I wandered through the new fiction and non-fiction, looking for authors I recognize - saw nothing that looked familiar and nothing I'd seen on anyone else's reading list, so I picked out six random books to read. Then I got home and realized I had already definitively declared in #7 what I'd be reading. Wow. What a memory.

I just finished reading "The Kitchen Sink" on Shauna Niequist's excellent blog. She is one of my favorite authors (Cold Tangerines & **Bittersweet) and I always look forward to her blog posts showing up in my Google Reader. Shauna meanders through several topics (thus the title) before landi...
I have loved every page of Bittersweet. I'm now going thru it again, randomly selecting chapters and trying to choose my fav.

My hair hasn't looked that good since last Tuesday. I've got a 7 week deadline to take a stab at the list. I've got to avoid the temptation to just do the easy things on the list or hyper-focus just on the pie crust. If I try a little bit of everything everyday, I might make some significant progress and have a breakthrough or two!

Winding Down to Revenge
On the way back from Mugaruro, our bus driver, Manuel, invited us to his home to meet his family. Of course we accepted his invitation! He was one of our drivers last year. If we end up going out to dinner at night, we will keep a driver with us and then he will join us for dinner. So, last...
We would love to have you do the same thing in Burundi. We will get a formal invitation for you from a local pastor/church if you're interested in joining us there! Pastor Pierre was beyond thrilled and overwhelmed with the keyboard. They could never imagine such a wonderful gift! The little church they've planted is the only Nazarene church in Burundi with a "building" of their own. God is definitely blessing the work that they have started there.

Dan (@daninreallife) is in Burundi right now. He's got a jam-packed schedule of translator training, discipleship, pastor's leadership development conference, follow-up visits to previously planted churches, scouting out cities/sites for our next couple of e3 partners campaigns. In spite of a...
Yeah, 1.5 weeks just flies by. I seriously do pray every time they head out with keys in their hand. Steven can't wait to drive our Scion - manual transmission - he did it once before he had his license. He drove almost all the way to school before he started to panic because of all the traffic and he kept getting red lights so had to downshift. The last 1/2 mile he pretty much rode the clutch to death.
Empty Nest
I have two sons. Mike is 20. He works at Chick-fil-a. He attends community college. He's actively involved in a church college group. Loves to hang out with his friends. Loves to spend quality time with his family. Steve is 16. He's a sports fan - really, a football fanatic. He attends h...
Surprise Letter From Pierre
I received the following letter from Pastor Pierre in Burundi - thought you all might enjoy an update!! Oh! Praise the Lord. May Our True God Almighty bless you, your family, your Church and your Country. Amazing! I thought that I was dreaming when someone told me: "pastor, I saw you and your church online." Yes, I realize that it is true. Now, we are praying for every contacts you are doing. I will send you an updated picture of the church very soon. The church now grows, many people testify. We have in the church two girls from Jehovah's... Continue reading

e3 Burundi Team Journal - Meet Pierre
We first met Yvonne & Pierre (husband and wife) in January 2008. They were two of the translators for our first official e3 campaign in Burundi. Since then, Pierre has been a translator on every e3 Burundi campaign. Pierre is also a pastor in the Nazarene Church. His church is located in the Kan...
