Pops - great question. The US Army brought a museum quality replica of a whale tooth for the shrine to display. I'm with you on the sentiment, but the point was to help bring a sense of peace to the place and thereby getting some help from the religious men who operate the tomb/shrine.

MSN and others ran the AP version of the story (which I linked to above). This story got some decent coverage. Should have gotten a lot more.

Major Kong - The official Army story had him as a Marine in one part, but, in his photo, as an Army SSG. I'll change it. Thanks for the catch.

Mark - I'm glad you have pride in your Corps. You should. But your veiled complaint about the Army is inaccurate. The Corporal was put in for a Navy Cross, last I heard. A soldier would not have been put in for that award.

Jimbo- I think that there is difference between having a vehicle crash and getting hit by an IED and not being visibly wounded. You could have TBI in both cases, but only one was caused by an enemy (hence "combat-related"). But the soldier who was IED'd gets the same, lower-rated benefits as the vehicle crash soldier. This doesn't add up to me. Not at all.

FWIW - Stover is a decent guy with a tough job (and probably some really bad guidance). I have heard that they've gotten the message.

JrAfGrey - not sure that IAVA is really the place for a Libertarian...I'm sure it's good for you. I tried steering Alex of Army of Dude to IAVA. As for IAVA's disagreement with current policy, it's not the stuff in the open that I have a big problem with. I agree with a lot of what they do and will continue to work with IAVA on many issues. Their staff in DC work very hard on everyone's behalf. AND, in order to change the VA and the DoD in positive ways, we'll all have to work together. As for the whole IVAW/ArmySergeant thing, John Kerry was proven wrong and a proven liar. The modern-day version of Winter Soldier isn't any different. Serving up propaganda victories to the enemy is just plain wrong in my book. If that offends you, talk to me in person and I'll give you the rated R version of what I think about it. It'll be a cold day in hell before I even link to, let alone think about working with, IVAW. I'll be writing a post later about IVAW. Stay tuned...

UP - that's right. He was the drug czar under Clinton. And while it did not go so well, it's basically a job to hold rather than win. He took the job because (1) probably needed a job and (2) it was more of joint effort back then when Joint wasn't a nice word. It was a tough job, no doubt. It's not that I luvre him, I just trust him to give us the truth, no spin, and to fix the problems that exist (and they are legion).

CJ - I was going to recommend the same thing. You want to make an impact, have center left to left leanings, etc? IAVA is perfect for Army Sergeant. IVAW is a joke and she is working hard to change that (a foray into the realm of futility). She could put that energy to good use with IAVA.

Sparkles - I also quoted (and wrote that you should also check out) Rosen's defense of his actions in Big West's piece. i did not say i deceived the afghan soldier. on the contrary, both i and the taliban commanders i was with told the afghan soldiers that i was a journalist and in fact i showed him my passport. of course there is nothing wrong with deceiving anybody if its going to protect you, but it wasnt necessary in this case, and i did not claim to deceive them. i in fact had to persuade them that i was a journalist and not a suicide bomber, which is what they suspected at first.

Mr. Sparkle - you are obtuse. I asked readers to read the This Ain't Hell link first which explains the complexity of the report card. If you buy their criteria and believe that Dennis Kucinich deserves an "A" while Duncan Hunter gets a "C" and McCain a "D", you are either stupid or think we are stupid. Either way, you should go somewhere else. And, Senator Obama tried to get the Iraqi govt to withhold the troop withdrawals until he became President. That doesn't sound very pro-troop to me...
