Yet another beautiful day. Clear water, flat and plenty of room with only about thirty swimmers. Tomorrow there will be a three metre swell off the coast but its mainly coming from the south with a south westerly wind, so we will be lucky to have a two inch swell in Manly. Added to this the fact that the offshore bouy went to nearly 19c a short while ago. So for the next week or so I think we can look forward to beautiful flat ocean with warm water and lots of marine life.

Well that was a much nicer swim today than yesterday. Quite a big surf but good sets so getting out was easy. A bit choppy going over to Shelly and then like a washing machine coming back with the strong westerly. The good news [or bad if you are a surfer] is that these westerlies will chop the surf down to next to nothing by tomorrow. And it looks like it will be flat for at least the coming week. The swell and wind will turn aroung to southerly in a few days and that of course means lake like conditions in Manly. Should be great for swimmers.

Wow that was warm today. 18c I kid you not! It could actually get warmer, so I think you can say the worst of the cold water is over. James Goins led me astray over the Bower reef on the way back this morning and there was a bunch of about six Port Jackson sharks settled neatly on the bottom. Check them out tomorrow they'll almost certainly still be there. There was also a large ray and lots of fish. Probably its worth a look most days if its reasonably clear.

that's fantastic Tim, and Tim and James and Trish, well done. Well done to the other 89 people who got their badge as well. Now that that is over you can't possibly miss the first day of SPRING tomorrow now can you??

I can't help myself, I just have to comment, particularly as it was my back that obstructed the view on this mornings picture. I thought James was just using me for shadow! I've just had a look at the "wall of fame". Its certainly grown. What an eclectic lot of ?persons. Some of them have that appearance of 'my minder must be looking everywhere for me by now'. Have a look at it and if your photo is not there it would be great to get a good one in before Julie puts one of "those" up there.

Well another beautiful day in paradise with a water temperature approaching 18c. I predicted that correctly at least, so I will make the prediction that we will have a whale here on Tuesday! What a great thing that would be for the last day of winter!! It seems unbelievable that winter is already over. It doesn't seem that long ago we were talking about what we would do when the water got cold and look its finished!! Its really getting quite light in the mornings now and it is approaching that time when we could start doing swims at 5.50am to Queenscliff and back before the B&B. Maybe when the water gets a bit warmer still.

Wasn't that a beautiful Swim? It really doesn't get much better than that. A typical superb winter's day!! Cloudless, Sunny and warm without any wind and great visibility with a surface as flat as a billiard table. To top it all off, lots of like minded people to swim with, which all goes to making it a GREAT way to start the day. As you can see from Julie's blog there were 69 people swam today, which is certainly a record for winter and I suspect also for the Bold and Beautiful altogether. Wouldn't it be great if we could really set a record to be proud of before the end of winter; say 100 for tomorrow? I'm sure we could do it, it just needs everybody to get out of bed on time and make it down to the swim on time. HOW ABOUT IT EVERYONE?? Let's give it a go. If you read this, which probably not many of you do, pass it on to your friends and see if we can really get the numbers. The other thing worth noticing is that 82 people have got their winter badge and it looks like the number will hit about 90 over the next three days that are left of winter. This is an amazing achievement, particularly in view of the fact that the number of swims compared to last year [13] has risen to 20. So don't be worried about those surf predictions. It is actually forecast to fall overnight and be even better tomorrow, but as could be seen today the southerly swell just does not affect Manly at all. The water temperature may also rise as there is a tongue of warm water opposite Sydney which has come down in the EAC and reaches as high as 20c. In fact the offshore bouy has risen to over 18c. So maybe even the cold water is a thing of the past. No promises though. See you all tomorrow for a big one.

Poseidon might be on holidays I suspect Tim or even in a cranky mood. There has been a large swell coming in from the Antarctic for the last four days which will reach Sydney tomorrow in the morning so that the swell will go from two inches to ten feet by lunchtime. All is not lost however as it is very Southerly and probably won't have any effect on the surf at Manly. Check out to see the mechanics of it. On the positive side there is a tongue of hot water coming down from the Coral Sea which has lifted the offshore temperature bouy from 16 to 18c. Check it out on . The only problem here is that the bouy is about 7km off the coast, so it will probably be pretty chilly still onshore.

Awesome morning is right. It was just beautiful with dead flat water at the tropical temperature [nearly] of 16.4c. Visibility is not one hundred percent yet but is improving, and there have been a lot of giant cuttlefish around evidently although I personally haven't seen one yet. Linda said she hasn't seen a Port Jackson shark yet; well there have certainly been plenty of those, even I have spotted a couple. On the fauna side of things I was almost certain I could hear a whale singing underwater this morning, but I eventually worked out it was someone with broken ribs, calling out in agony with each stroke. There is a real example of "true grit", what some people put themselves through just to participate in the swim. A special bravery award has been suggested at the awards ceremony, if only we could identify who it was?? Don't forget that the beautiful water and conditions continue even after winter is finished, which happens in about a week. So make the most of the great water while it and you are here.

That's the English Channel alright and Collie has already done it once in water of 14c and it took him EIGHTEEN HOURS without a wetsuit!! I'd have to get in the fridge to warm up after that, but he's obviously still alive. BTW Shelly Clark who is an outstanding open water swimmer had to jettison her attempt at the Channel yesterday as the weather has been so crook, she never left the beach. How disappointing!

BTW Gary it's good to hear from you, keep in touch from Mooloolaba. Hope you can come and join us again soon and we certainly will do the same if we're up that way. I'd also like to mention Mahdi [as well as Jules] Well done to actually turn up and do a "passion" swim even though you already have your badge. Unbelievable.

"The Shark" was of course a Port Jackson that even I saw at the point on the way to Shelly. Actually Sue Anne saw it and pointed it out to me or I probably would have missed it yet again. Seems to be a lot of 'wingeing and whining' about the cold but when you think of it, it's only a degree or so colder than when we all thought it was fine and really we've had a pretty good winter with the last two days being the only times the temperature has gone under 16c. Also on the positive side the weather has been wonderful. beautiful clear days with lots of sun and no wind, clear water and the swell predicted to be about 2 inches for the next ten days. It doesn't get much better. All we need now is a whale to come in again. There have been some Southern Rights further south that might come in even though it is a bit late. you never know so don't be the one that misses out.

Hi its the phantom blogger again. What a great morning, I don't need to say any more than what Julie put on the Blog,it was just superb with clear cool water and no swell with a beautiful sunny day. According to Magic Seaweed the low swell conditions are here for the long run and there are even a couple of days coming up where there will be NO SWELL AT ALL!! Check it out on Magic Seaweed yourself. It was a record morning this morning for some reason?? 63 swimmers, it seemed reminiscent of the Cole Classic, swimming over to Shelly. What would be terrific would be a really good record for winter like 100 swimmers. How about everyone makes a big effort for tomorrow morning??

What a magical morning!! The sun was up and shining without a cloud in the sky by 6.30am, the air felt warm and balmy, all the flowers are out along the walkway; Spring has sprung. And to top it off Magic Seaweed had predicted a swell of 0.2m and it was even less than that. Not a breath of wind, flat as a pancake with much better visibility today and a water temperature at nearly 17c. What could be better??? Gary you had some beautiful days, but today would have convinced you to sell up in Mooloolaba and come down to Manly for good. Now is the time to catch up with a few swims to get your numbers up as it doesn't get much better than this. Check the tally page to see how many you need, there are still 11 swims left in winter which allows another 46 people to gain their winter badge on top of the 69 who have already got it. Give it a go everyone and lets see if we can top the magical 100 for the winter badge this year.

well what a pleasant surprise to see so many comments on the site today!! It certainly was a lovely swim and what a pity we didn't realise the whales were only 50m away. We could have easily swum over to them. Well even though this afternoon it is pretty grotty with wind and chop, according to Magic Seaweed it is only going to be a swell of 0.2m tomorrow. That is about the same level of swell in the average bathtub. So again 'make hay while the sun shines', these days are just wonderful, grab them while you can.

what a beautiful morning captured on that shot of the sunrise. it was every bit as beautiful as that looked, but degenerated later into an awful day. you certainly have the best of the day early. no whales though! what a disappointment. it must be coming tomorrow.
